  1. I don 't totally agree with Ozzie about the US system where the LSA was created to work around the problems with FAR103. Max 10 gallons, no passengers and the crazy situation whereby there are thousands of pilots taking their wives/friends for "instructional" flights. To my mind LSA is a US solution to a US problem that did not exist in Aust and introducing LSA to Australia is an unnecessary complication. dems my thoughts Davidh
  2. Yep a Mong it is. I posted an article on this aircraft at Tom Aberle’s Phantom - Articles on the 23.7th. best of wishes Davidh
  3. Yep one precaution "run like hell!!!" 'cause if you get it to start without a fly wheel, it will instantly over rev and tear itself to pieces.
  4. It frightens me to see where RAA is aiming with faster, bigger, more complex aircraft and pitching for above 5000 ft and CTA endorsements. I fear that some day a heavy, fast RAA aircraft will be involved in a fatality within CTA and the reaction by the media, the coroner and other authorities will be to close down the priveledges currently enjoyed by RAA owner/pilots. I don't see the requirement of a full PPL an excessive burden for those who aspire to fly pseudo GA aircraft. Outside of the medical there is essentially no difference between the skill/competency requirements for an OCTA PPL and a RAA certificate. To my mind it would be a tragic if the rush for bigger, faster, higher the sub-550kg, sub-80knts aircraft became sidelined. Unfortunately that seems to be happening. 'dems my thoughts Davidh
  5. Outside of GAAP tower hourse MBN defaults to CTAF-R so a RAA pilot in a RAA aircraft can fly in outside tower hours. Overnight parking for ultralights is around $5.00 perday. A good idea for anyone not familiar with MBN would to get a copy of the free CASA publication visual pilot guide for Melbourne, there are also VPGs for Brisbane Sydeny and Perth, I'm not sure about Adelaide. Davidh
  6. Yesterday I was in discussion with a CFI at MBN who stated that in order to enter controlled airspace with an "approved" rather than a "certified" engine that one needed to phone in and request permission first. He also said that in his experience permission was always granted. This was complete news to me. Presuming that he has been making these phone calls and ATC have not been telling him that the call was un necessary then ATC must be of this opinion as well. Does any one know if the RVAC's Sportstars have certified engines? Or if all Sportstars have certified engines? curiouser & curiouser davidh
