  1. BUTLER COUNTY, Kansas, September 18, 2008 A small plane has crashed in Butler Co. Witnesses say they saw a man parachute from the experimental plane just east of Douglas, KS around 11:30 Thursday morning. The man is expected to be OK. The plane is the new Cessna Skycatcher, which is yet to be released. KSN has a crew headed to the scene and will have updates as soon as they are available.

  4. A good article on Engine oils http://www.shell.com/home/content/aviation-en/aeroshell_site/technical_articles/techartpages/techart09_30071425.html
  5. Looking at my Engine Mount for a [ATTACH]6390.vB[/ATTACH]3300 on a 601xl [supplied by Jab USA] and noticed the Firewall Attachment Plates are only 0.080†thick on the Upper L/H and both bottom plates. The upper R/H is 0.125†thick. On the Zenith drawing 6-JE-1 it specifies that all should be 0.125†thick. Has anyone else come across this anomaly?. Got an email from Jab USA stating that their welder does not use 0.080" plate, so where did they then get this engine mount? I sent them a couple of pics so they can show their welder Cheers T87
  6. An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled "STOP! ACTS 2:38 ( Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ so your sins may be forgiven.) The burlar stopped in his tracks. The women calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar " Why did you just stand there?. All the lady did was yell a scripture to you. " Scripture", replied the burglar, She said she had an AXE and Two 38's.

Zenith 601xl Cable Tensioning One method to make sure that your aileron control cables stay tight is to tension them to about 75 pounds for the first flights. After a few hours of flying, tension them to about 30 pounds. In the first +25 hours of your experimental flight test program, I would recommend that you check the tension often. Tensioning the cables should be done in warm weather. Tension should than be checked every 50 hours, or sooner if the aircraft has not been flown for some time. Rudder tension should be about 22 lbs +/- 5 Aileron tension should be about 30 lbs +/- 5 Elevator tension should be about 40 lbs +/- 5 Sincerely Chris Heintz

Ian are you modifying any of the metal to metal contact points like the rudder hinge attach bearings and the pedal end bearings? I've decided to put nylon bushes on the pedal bearings and bronze flange bushes for the rudder upper and lower bearings. Cheers T87
  10. Attended a Casa sponsored In- Flight decision making and Weather to Fly + Meteorological briefing on Basic weather and Embedded Thunder storms and changes to the TAF codes as per ICAO requirements at the Albion Park Airfield [iRA]. If you get the opportunity to go to one TAKE IT well worth it.[included a FREE sit down roast dinner] Cheers T87
  11. A great shot of a lightening strike
  12. If importing these sensenich props from the USA be aware there is a Customs fumigating charge of approx $200.00 on top off freight.Just paid for mine Cheers T87
  13. Spoke to a QBE Aviation rep today to find out how much it would be to insure a plane for $60,000.00 and he said around the $2000.00 but only if it's a four stroke Cheers T87
  14. Orion's views are only based on hearsay and innuendo. He clearly states that and then goes on to speculate which is very unprofessional. There are 100's flying out there with many hours with no problems. But like you say time will tell.Personnelly I would welcome a professional second opinion from him or someone else with the expertise to settle the debate once and for all with a total test regine not just the static. The 601xl kit appears to be of excellent quality, no hiccups so far.Cheers T87:thumb_up:
  15. Hi Sain,[He was saying that there is a group that believes there is an issue and he has been asked by them to take a look at the design, and that the number of accidents of that type in that aircraft exceeds statistical likelihood] What I'm saying is that what that group is going on with and saying is speculation [rubbish]All this was discussed on the Matronics forums which became very emotive for some. Look at the first reports of the crash at Surfers earlier this year.Wings folding as stated by eye witnesses but on the beach cam NO SUCH thing happened. So you need to take all that hype with a grain of salt.I'd rather wait for the proper reports. Cheers T87
  16. Here is a link to an article by William Wynne on the integrity of the CH 601XL. It is long, but really worth reading. All that info on the previous forum is rubbish. I tend to believe the builder that suggested, just maybe, some competitors have infiltrated that forum in order to discredit Zenith, Chris or whatever. I really don't think what happened to an aircraft a year ago, in a different country, with different laws , different builders, flying conditions etc. is all that helpful in defining integrity of the design. Knock off the speculation and get back to building. If your worried about the proven 601XL, build something else! http://flycorvair.com/601paper.html (http://flycorvair.com/601paper.html)
  17. Hi DPW, Yes this is my first kit but I should mention I'm a non-current LAME Engines/Airframes + a Level 2 with the RAA .I prefer to work with Aluminum as that is what I mainly worked with and still potter around on vintage A/C like the C47's/DC3 Cheers T87
  18. The Zenith 601xl is/was my choice and I'm looking forward to the day its completed. It should take about 1hr to put the wings on so not too bad.So far completed the rudder, elevators and now working on the flaps.Very simple and easy to build with most of the holes pre-drilled and no special tools needed other then the pneumatic/hydraulic riveter and I should mention it has as standard, electric flaps and elevator trim. Cheers T87
  19. What is the going price of insuring an aircraft for say $60,000.00 ? Cheers T87

    Book

  25. Came across another reason The pros and cons were: With a nose heavy plane and the flat side rearward, there is a tendency of the nosewheel to come down hard after the mains touchdown. The result for some has been that the nose bungee bounces the nose back high enough to fly again due to the high AOA when the nose come up. Vice versa, with the flat side of the main gear forward, if two heavyweight folk step on the entry steps at the same time, they may overcome the nose weight and cause the plane to sit on its tail end tie down. The summary is that it depends on your preference's and the final weight distribution of your plane. Fortunately, someone noted that if you have a bit of extra slack in your brake lines and don't mind the refitting work on wheel pants brackets, the gear can be changed later if you want to do so. With the flat side aft, the main gear are a few inches farther behind the CG. This gives them a longer lever arm and makes it a bit harder to rotate on take off and gives a tendency to drop the nose gear abruptly on landing. This also puts a bit more weight on the nose gear. Putting the flat side forward will reduce these tendencies. It has been stated that putting the flat side forward will make it easier to drop the tail on the ground when climbing into the plane by way of the rear step. According to my calculations, even with the plane loaded for gross weight and most aft CG, climbing out of the plane by the rear step will not put the tail on the ground. If both try to climb out at once, that may be a different story but that can easily be avoided. My gear legs have the flat face rearward because that was the way the plans showed it at the time. I have to ease the back pressure on the stick just after liftoff to avoid over-rotating and have to apply increased back pressure on touchdown to keep the nosewheel from dropping abruptly. This is not a real big deal and I've gotten used to this behavior. I never considered it dangerous, just a bit different than the planes I used to fly. If I were building it today, I would reverse the gear legs. Someday when I find the time, I will probably reverse my gear legs to improve the handling a bit. It's not a high priority with me though.
