  1. Unless you restrict that cooling system to the wings, you're going to be heating up the cabin, which gets hot enough in here anyway. Also unless you use very thin pipes, you're looking at quite a bit of coolant and that also means quite a bit of weight. Another thing you'd have to add is some good pump, to push the liquid through those pipes, as otherwise you'd end up with a lot of heat near the engine, and cool coolant in the pipes.
  2. The whole story either makes no sense or paints a very bad picture of the pilot: - 15 minutes after takeoff from Weipa doesn't get you anywhere near Aurukun or Coen, it doesn't even get you between the two. - 1500 feet flying over swamps in the middles of no-where? If you still need a map to find a suitable landing spot when you're already gliding from 1500 feet, you're most likely not going to make it... So was there other option that they've picked first or wasn't there any? Also some more links with the rescuers side of the story: http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/cairns/2013/06/12/pilot-and-passenger-located-safe-and-well-coen-area/ http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/cairns/2013/06/13/emergent-aircraft-landing-sees-coen-police-to-the-rescue/ And looks like the Jab didn't fly off on its own after all:
  3. Be careful using this line. What will you say to someone who says exactly the same thing but uses " fly a recreational aircraft" instead of " ride without a helmet"? It's a bad argument anyway, as as soon as you start using it you have to ask: what about overweight people - do you want to charge them for heart surgery ? How about smokers - no free health care for them either? And so on...
  4. That reminds me of 2 things: 1. My uncle was in the air force and he got me one of those small pilot parachutes that would pull the main chute used for stopping the plane on the ground. Something like this: What we would do as kids, was attach it to a pushbike and compete who can ride the longest before stopping with that chute dragged behind. 2. My friend had a neighbor who would use that sort of engine and prop to ski uphill in winter.
  5. Ok, let me clear couple things: 1. water freezing - have you ever tried to freeze a bottle of strong alcohol (vodka, whiskey, etc) - you need a temperature far lower than you would experience anywhere in Australia. At about -20 C vodka usually gets a bit "oily" but still liquid, and that's about 35-40% alcohol, rest water (and for those unaware - ethanol is the alcohol we drink in all alcoholic drinks) 2. ethanol absorbing water - out of wiki: "Mixing equal volumes of ethanol and water results in only 1.92 volumes of mixture." So yes, ethanol will absorb some of the water or rather the mixture of alcohol and water will be of smaller volume than a sum of both, but still much bigger than any of them alone. So the described test will still work, as ethanol mixes better with water than with petrol, it will transfer from fuel into the water and you'll be able to see those 2 liquids separated. 3. If you have water in your fuel that water will show as droplets at the bottom of the tank. Even if you do have water mixed in the fuel and do this test, the water will settle at the bottom of your container raising the initial water level, thus indicating a false alcohol content (if your fuel had no alcohol in it) or will just give you a higher alcohol percentage value if you do have alcohol in it. Also since E10 fuel have 10% alcohol any water mixed with the fuel shouldn't get too much bearing on the test result itself. As to the effect of all this on engine performance - I have no idea, but I assume since water won't burn you will effectively have less fuel in your cylinder for the same amount of air, and also you'll have water absorbing some of the explosion energy, so I'd guess your engine power will be reduced.
  6. Talking about mothers in law - there's this one ad on tv about some insect repelling gizmo, where a guy pops up with his experience and goes along the line: - I've installed 3 of these at mother in law's house couple weeks ago. Nothing seen moving in there since. It always makes me wonder - what has happened to his mother in law, and why isn't she moving anymore...
  7. They don't, they just contact RAAus and then it's up to RAAus to notify you. As to how RAAus will contact you - probably the same way they contact you about your membership, rego, etc.
  8. I use one of those in my trike: http://www.microavionics.co.uk/Helmets%20and%20Visors.html There's also http://www.icaro2000.com/Products/Helmets/UL-models.htm And probably couple other.
  9. Not really, As I've mentioned it doesn't happen all the time, I'd even say it's quite rare. I'm leaning towards the icing theory, so I don't think there is anything I can fix.
  10. Couple things to think about: - what sort of plane is it and how does it handle the rougher air during the day (for example I fly a trike, and you can pretty much only fly it in the first or last couple hours each day, as during the hotter parts of the day thermals make it hard work rather than fun to fly). That may limit your available time in the air and if all syndicate members are only weekend flyers, you may not be able to get a spot. - how many planes for hire are there in your local area - again the availability angle - how many people are there in the syndicate and how often do they fly - I know in some syndicates there are people that just want to have a plane and not actually fly it, but if you end up with a lot of people that want to fly each weekend - can you fly during the week or only on weekends - you may get a much better deal out of the syndicate if you're the only one flying during the week. - do you want to do any longer trips and if your syndicate or hire place would allow it. I decided to buy my own, but at the end of the day it would most likely be cheaper to hire.
  11. It may have or may have not been the effect of this Kickstarter project: Where some guy was gathering funds for writing funny messages on the sky.
  12. Wasn't there a case some 10 years ago or so, where they've arrested some guy in Austria at an airfield when he was about to go for another flight but someone has asked him about his license and he was surprised that you even need one (all his training was on a simulator). Also: P.S. I don't condone any form of flying without prior instruction and have never played with any realistic or even semi-realistic simulators.
  13. That's definitely not it, most of the time (as in most whole flights) the engine works completely fine. I'm sure the kick comes from the engine / prop, as it's a trike and I don't feel anything through the control frame, more like a kick from the back. It's also not a spark plug problem, as it happened on the previous set and then on a brand new one replaced just 2 weeks ago. I think nunans may be onto something, as my EGTs are also a bit low (usually about 550 C range).
  14. I've noticed that my 582 every now and then will do a kind of a stronger shake as if someone would give the airframe a kick. When it happens it will be a single event like that every couple minutes or so (it doesn't start shaking all the time, just one kick, and back to normal). It seems to happen more on cloudy days or when flying relatively close to clouds (on most days it doesn't happen at all). When it happens all engine parameters stay normal. Does anyone have any suggestions what that could be?
  15. Firefly, it was changed because there is no long weekend in May anymore, the Labor day holiday got moved to October (I think). The plan for next year as far as I know is to make it on the Anzac day weekend again. As for the fly-in itself: we were the first aircraft to fly into Inglewood on Thursday afternoon : There were 2 more trikes, a powered para-glider and and a hang-glider with a mosquito engine on it before us, but they all arrived in a car or on a trailer Couple more showed up on Friday: And on Saturday evening there was hardly any space left to park:
  16. My co-worker was flying yesterday (21 April) from Brisbane to Perth and apparently somewhere over Adelaide the plane he was on had to dive quickly enough so that the passengers got lifted of their seats. Later the pilot has explained that there was A380 on the same flight path as the Qantas flight. Haven't seen anything on the news about this yet.

  20. Have a fix here, writing white text on white background is not an optimal way to do it, unless you're afraid of the taxmen and want to hide your great ideas from them ;)
  21. I'll see what I can do, when I'm at the field next time (it's not on my trike). Here's the photo from Yarrawonga school shop, that roy has mentioned: http://www.yarrawongaflighttraining.com.au/?page_id=104
  22. I'm not sure if it was exactly the same antenna, but I've seen them mounted in couple different places on the trike: - on the keel with a purpose made strap, I think Airborne even had them in stock for a while - on the side of the pod, but that was later moved to the keel mount - on a bracket attached where the rear bottom suspension strut attaches to the trike.
