  1. No you are not the only one. I sometimes struggle to see what the sock is doing when over the field. It is also not often that the primary and secondary windsocks indicate same direction maybe due to the secondary being tucked away near buildings or other obstructions. The TAF just gives me a heads up as to what I may encounter at that location, I don,t make runway selection based on it. If there has been no traffic landing ahead me so I know which runway is active then I overfly looking for the sock.
  2. It,s not the country of origin of the vehicle you have to worry about. Anyone flown into Mangalore lately ?
  3. Good comeback Danza It was either my dislexia or the cab sav.
  4. I a I'm surprised you didn't already have your light and 308 hanging out the window. Typical weekend up our way
  5. You are flogging a dead horse here, turbo. Let's get back to the thread where most flying under the auspice of RAA not only don't want to support the organisation that keeps them in the air but are also too tight to pay for their associations magazine.
  6. I Speak from first hand knowledge not an urbanite fed with anecdotal and media rubbish
  7. Danza, as a primary producer I pay no fee for my shooters licence however I can understand why members of the SSAA need $20 mill cover given the way many of them conduct themselves when hunting (or poaching ) deer. Not a valid comparison given that SSAA is a virtual political party
  8. Reality check !! I bet there is a heap of you pilots and armchair aviators who subscribe or buy other aviation magazines. So why the banging on about Sport Pilot. It is a by product of RAA not its sole purpose for existance. As I stated previously - you can't even buy a membership to your local pub darts association for the price of a membership to RAA. If you are now finding aviation too expensive either trade the Audi in on a Kia or give it away.
  9. Feel free to apply the same comparison to local, state and federal government. Thank god RA's deficit isn,t anywhere near that of Australia's.
  10. I use a MGL Enigma panel and had to ditch the polarised sunnies as I couldn't read it
  11. Frank, you appear to fit that genre as well as I'm sure shafs64 is perfectly capable of defending his own position on this particular thread
  12. (Comment removed by Mod...abusive) I can't attest for the 3 axis crashes, but when it comes to the 2 axis I understand that majority were HGFA registered
  13. I don't think Dick Smith would see himself as a hero. One of those words which appears to be loosely used by the media these days. Maybe the words businessman, entrepenour , adventurer, visionary or proud aussie may be more apt. Think back to those other two "heroes" from the Beaconsfield mine accident in Tas. They were victims who survived not heroes as the Media would have us believe.
  14. If you are interested in seeing how well an electronic Aviation magazine can work take the time to visit the App Store and download a free copy of Trike Mag. It is aimed at the trike, microlight segment and contains tech, safety, touring and biographic articles. It is a true electronic mag, easy to access and read also containing video and pod casts. Published here in Australia by "Toucan" Peter from Moruya. Well worth a look.
  15. You are definitely an ideas man Gandalph. I've been busting to mount a 50 cal on my trike
  16. I still don't get what all the fuss is about ( except for a need to decide on a reliable and expedient way in which to get the digital version out to members ). A magazine or newsletter is the byproduct of a viable and dynamic association or club, NOT the other way round. As for the cost to us members it is not an issue just so long as the financial decisions taken by the Board ensure the future viability of RAA and in turn us members. From what I can glean from this forum many of you will be soon hanging up your pilots helmet and picking up the bowls. I can assure you that membership fees at your local bowls club will be more than what you currently pay to the RAA
  17. Gee Sue I thought we had it bad. Even though we have satellite Andy is right, bloody woeful at peak times. Our copper also went in the ground when Alexander Bell was a lad and every farmer in the road has dug it up a couple of times since so the ADSL electrons can't make it from the exchange. Av8or
  18. If you have no access to ADSL and poor wireless you then have the option of govt subsidised satellite broadband. Currently not as fast as the other two but is fairly reliable
  19. If we as members need to pay more in fees to guarantee the viability of our organisation then so be it. Compared to other interest, sporting and Motorsport organisations we get off cheap. Given the fact that the majority of aviators in this country are aged over sixty it's no wonder that there is such resistance to move away from print media. If you need something to read in the dunny buy the Weekly Times.
  20. Just had my renewal come through - fast and efficient. RAA is to be commended as having been a member of many associations and clubs prior to discovering aviation I can assure you that RAA is way above most of them. I struggle to understand the wingers, grizzles and naysayers who continue to bang on regarding rego, license and magazine costs as what we get for our money is exceptional. Think about it when you next pay your motor vehicle rego.
  21. Another thread in this forum is the tragic death of two wonderful people who crashed their trike at Glen Innes. The aircraft was fitted with a BRS but for whatever reason it was not deployed. Mandating a mechanical solution is not the answer. I think Alf is on the right track
  22. Thank you Alf for injecting a modicum of common sense into this thread.
  23. Why single out RAA ! What about those hunreds of ageing Cesnas clunking around the sky's. Not to mention all those "rag and stick" aircraft that some of us fly . Give it a rest !
