  1. oh yeah i forgot to add, IAN, if you close this fantastic site down i will poke you in the eyes :black_eye: don't sucumb to the crap.
  2. Nav x Hi Baz, in my opinion after just doing my Nav's you will need the following, 1. ERSA this is great as you plann the flight and mark on a piece of paper or even have the page open so when at one zero miles to the aerodrome you know what the Freq is, aerodrome elevation ect, (any right hand ccts) ECT... the best piece of info in flight, has different info and if you get a diversion (which are piss easy) you just look up the new airport and find out the info on it. 2. Wizz Wheel obviouse why you need this, calculate flight times, fuel, ect and my advice is to you keep the little red book that comes with the wizz wheel with you in your flight bag. remember if you forget how to use in flight you can quickly pull the book out and have a look (the instructor is not concerned that you had to look at the book but the fact you had the book and got your self out of the poop remember its about how well you manage the situation and getting there you are judged on not how you do it) but no gps...:) 3. Ruler which measures VNC,WAC,VTC. 4. Charts, VNC, which is used to plan most local flights, WAC, which is not as detailed but will be needed if the VNC does not cover the area you are flying over. ERC L1 & L2, (L1 & L2 depending on area these are for melb) these are for calculating distance and (now i am not sure magnettic or true) headding between different places BUT is not to scale, alot of lines on this one but realy a great tool. PCA, dont know why i got this one ? looks like some sort of map for who to report to in case of an emergency ? VTC, this is a more detailed map for the centre of a particular city or area. much better for Nav if you are going over port philip bay down to tooradin and back across the bay to point cook ect. you may not need all of this for where you fly but i feel these are the basics to learn to use. makes a flight plan easier in my opinion. i got lost on my first solo nav due to equipment failure, but was able to re find myself and complete the next two legs of my trip all on time as well, all because i had all equipment with me and knew how to use every piece of equipment that the aircraft had to offer.
  3. hi Ian, very well could be mac related, if i had a windows product key i could use windows(have disc but no key) on my mac but i am stuck with safari. i will keep trying to resolve the problem
  4. hi thanks for the reply, unfortunately i dont have ME but i will have to try somthing else, it is killing me. i did try Mozilla but like you to no avail...
  5. Hi all, i am running a relatively new Mac Book. when i go to post a topic or reply to some threads it comes up that i have insuficient user priveledges and it could be my account may be awaiting confirmation ? has anyone else had these problems...... it is killing me slowly...
  6. i agree solo is solo... i am not sure if i agree with the 10 hours though. i have the ground theory under control but time will tell, maybe there is something i missed but as i said time will tell... motzartmerv, as for armchair nav'n i'v been everywhere man, i'v been everywhere man, i'v been everywhere man, and i think i can safely say we all have..... on a serious note though, flight planning i have down pat, i have made the most of the 25Nm radius and done my own nav x within these boundaries (have 2 airports within reach and 1 3 miles short) and this has been invaluable for me. i fly out to the short one and am on my land marks all the way, then from the short one back to geelong, then to bacchus marsh.... easy... but i will admit something here. before i left on my epic adventure i had the GPS turned on and had the home airport set in so if i got lost all i had to do was hit the home button but was never needed, having said that the whole time i was flying i had a sphincter factor of 9.5, it was realy mind-blowing to be in the air, still realy wet behind the ears and telling myself, if you get lost you are screwed..... where would you land now if the fan stopped, Oh crap why is avalon airport looki'n so close ECT. but i found all my calc's where correct and my KEY is to always know where you are on the map at any one time..... anyway i do my first NAV X on friday, already know where i am going for the first one but he will not give me a heads up on the rest which i am glad about..
  7. Ah all makes sense now... but what is avalon east, is there another field ?
  8. thanks for the reply's. i am a fair way off the PPL for now, but who would be the appropriate people to ask in the us NTSB ?
  9. I was about to post about this, i am wanting to fly in to the airshow in a RaAus Reg aircraft ? can this be done. like Ewen i want to fly in instead of driving (more fun) but dont have the foggiest idea on how to go about it ? do you need to lodge a flight plan ? big pete please post what you know
  10. hi all thanks for the replies. I done mine in a few stages. Started in 2000 with rudi in ballarat then when he closed I gave it up for a while but got back into it 12 months ago at inbound ( we probably know each other dave ) but unfortunately they have shut up shop as well so I had to go out to lethbridge airpark with CFI Bruce vickers who is a great instructor and complete my certificate hence the reason for being endorced on 4 types. Can't wait to do the navs. I am hoping to have them done before the 29 of this month so I can hire the 230 out of ballarat (inbound) and fly it home to melton on the Friday and commute each day of the weekend to the lethbridge flyin. I will have to pop up oneday soon dave so we can go for a scoot around ballarat.
  11. Hi Everyone i have to tell you all that i now have my pilots certicicate :) i have done it in 23.2 Hours dual and 5.3 Hours solo. :) and in doing so i have 4 aircraft endosements Jabiru LSA,160,170 and technam-s :) after getting my pilots certificate on thursday i went and hired a jab 160 on friday and flew out of ballarat for 1.0hrs. the whole time i was flying i was grinning from ear to ear and was having a hard time comprehending that i was in charge and i could do what i wanted without having to ask the CFI. so i flew all round the 25NM radius of ballarat, done a few fly overs decending to do touch and go's ect... then i went out to lethbridge today and flew the technam out to bacchus marsh, fly over of geelong, nearly out to torqay and then back to lethbridge using my VNC and the GPS as a backup. i am booked in for my nav in a couple of weeks so i can go even further. now who wants a visit :) :) :) :)
  12. hi everyone just wanting to know what the minimum x country hours are for rec aircraft and what the average time to do the x country is ? I was under the impression the minimum hours where 5 ? Is this correct ? Cheers Adrian
  13. i would get on the blower to ATC before landing and say here is the deal, i will land safely if my log book is stamped with my CPL as soon as i land if not where is the nearest place to park LOL i fly with an ex singapore airlines pilot who says flying a 747 is easier than flying a cessna 152.
  14. hi all, if i got my PPL in australia what is involved in flying in the US ? i plan to do my PL after my Raa license and will be going to the US in 18 months or so and would like nothing more to fly a little whilst there ?
  15. thank god i am not able to read AREAFOR yeat :) . i am up to the stage of looking out the window and going "yep looks alright to me" Captain looks like a great day for me to stay inside and learn to read AREAFOR's :)
  16. oh yep re read my post and i should have worded it a little more clearer..
  17. High planes drifter, not at all, i was just trying to pour water on the fire before it even started. i actually agree with 99% of what people have stated on this thread, and as for your little bit of humor up the top IMO there is nothing wrong with a little humor at all, after all this is what i am here for to learn and have a bit of a laugh on the side, kinda sounds a little like me.. i can read between the lines and take the "constructive" criticism but absolutely hate it when people cone into a thread and go ballistic, which what i was wanting to prevent which has not happened.............YEAT................ so far happy with the thread and i have achieved what i set out for which was an answer to my question "what should i do about it"
  18. not a bad idea. but glad i have the maps and gear now.
  19. WOW $280 per hour.... he needs to fly a jab :) . i have had alot of people ask me ( oh how many hours do you have) which i do believe is the wrong question to ask then i reply with something like (oh i am up to PFL's) and they go eh ok then. like hours matter ? like the above i don't agree with hours being the above all and end all, i could stay doing circuits for the next 10 years and get 10,000 hours and a mate could fly all over australia 20 times over and clock 4,000 hours. i would say he has the most experience of all IMO. i am 100% sure i will never know it all and pride myself on asking questions (even silly ones of which people on the forum have been bombarded with) and will continue to do so well into my licence,PAX,Xcountry endorsements as well as into my own aircraft ownership, but one thing i will never do is crazy things which put peoples lives at risk. having said that i am in no way saying i will never make a mistake like wrong radio freq, wrong RWY ect but will never get in a jab and try to taxi at 30Kts or enter an active RWY these IMO are not mistakes but just stupid stupid people not thinking.. not to mention showing the public and novice flyers like myself its ok to do which is the most disappointing part of all. before i started flying i flew with a bloke who thought a pre flight check was not necacary ? what a great thing to show a person who is thinking of going for there pilots licence ? anyway lets not start arguments here this is what i was trying to avoid. i will next time approach the people who i believe have done something wrong in a polite manner and if no joy i will take it further, and if i am ever seen to be doing something wrong i would expect nothing less than this to be done to me.
  20. i do realize people make mistakes this is why i have not taken the time to lodge reports. 2 of the people i have seen doing these things are relative high time pilots who i know and would only look at me like a dickhead (being a new student) if i approach them even in the most positive manner, that method is best left alone, next method is "dobbing" them in which just creates paper work and you end up looking like a winger to the RAA (but this is my prefered method as it is the correct procedure) as it might send a propper message. my main concern is not the wheels up, or reverse circuits they are genuine mistakes but taxing to a point of where you are almost airborne and skating on the taxiway is un acceptable and my instructor witnessed it and we both watched as we thought he had mistaken the taxiway as a RWY; entering an active RWY with aircraft on it taxing towards the taxiway to exit, then turning to face that aircraft (being me) blocking the taxiway, taxing behind a citation (jet) in a 152, these are just stupid stupid mistakes, the aircraft coming towards me was a wakeup (a big one) but it was a genuine mistake maybe the pilot was just disorientated, he was very appologetic and corrected his actions. now for my navs who has a great hiding spot for me :)
  21. yes true i should start keeping a log of it, i will from now on. i am not a dobber though but having said that when i fly for fun i need to keep alive as do the rest of us...
  22. i have a bit of venting to do and need someone to give me an outside view... this is sort of an extension to the thread BRENT has started punnishment fitting the crime ECT... i have been doing my training at ballarat. i have seen some real crappy displays of airmanship and unfortunately all from GA pilots. i have seen a twin try to land with the wheels up on RWY 18 seen a 152 backtrack RWY 23 behind a citation and then sit behind it whilst it departed then departed just as the citation was rotating... been on short final and had an aircraft enter my runway RWY 36 so had to abbort and go around they did not even give radio calls landed on RWY 36 full stop and had a 152 try to do an intersection departure towards me whilst backtracking RWY 36 had another aircraft enter RWY 36 whilst i was Taxing RWY 36 been on crosswind and just after a touch and go on RWY 36 gave call for down wind and lifted wing to have a look (as ya do) and saw the other aircraft which called down wind RWY 36 but the problem was he was about 100 ft off my nose coming towards me and we had to take avasive action.. the only plus with this one was the other pilot admitted he was not shure of the airport, was very appologetic and re joined the circuit in the right direction. seen an aircraft taxi at about 35KTS ok i have vented...
  23. IMO if you where flying and the weather turned bad you should have asked for clearance, explained the situation and or landed in an appropriate field (precautionary search and landing) in an open field outside of CTA would have been the go i think just an opinion...
  24. the real question is why do women only want to know you after you are married...
