  1. Whoever allowed this to happen is in for the high jump. Quick, somebody call Dick and tell him it was ASA at fault.
  2. Nasty things these light helos. Even if structurally sound and engine operating normally, they can be taken so easily into parts of the flight envelope that it's just impossible to get out of.
  3. Dunno, both both are/were good news as far as I'm concerned.
  4. Read on another site that (ADS?) data showed final approach speed was 30+ kts over norm with only 300ft more runway than min requirement. Somebody confusing ambition with ability again?
  5. That's what happens when 'positive discrimination' and quotas are allowed to interfere with candidate selection based on skills and abilities.
  6. Presumably because it is an overhead electric line.
  7. Its wot oi fink, innit.
  8. It will work fine on the S6. It's not that the Android version (RWY) is not as good as the iPad one (OzRunways), it's just that it is in an earlier state of development. Apparently it's not just a case of porting across, it is a complete new start. Personally I found switching between the versions wasn't too difficult, but I'm getting old enough that I like to reduce all complications and now only run the OzRunways version.
  9. OK, "Poor literacy is an............"
  10. Common causes of badly composed questions are the 'closeness' of the person to the subject and the literacy level of the writer. A question should be phrased in a way that makes sense to a person regardless of their level of knowledge of the subject matter. Literacy is an increasing problem, as shown by the appalling grammar seen in mainstream media reporting these days.
  11. You really know how to cheer a guy up.
  12. I reckon a list like that would fall into the 'income generating' category. Its a review, not a revisit of the entire flying syllabus.
  13. According to some of the explanation material on the CASA web site, listed below are the sort of things to include. If the review was in a IFR equipped Piper Arrow there could be a fair bit to look at, but if it's in a Drifter or any basic VFR aircraft, how long should it really take to cover all those points? operating the aircraft’s navigation and operating systems conducting all normal, abnormal and emergency flight procedures for the aircraft applying operating limitations weight and balance requirements applying aircraft performance data, including take-off and landing performance data, for the aircraft.
  14. Train up the groundsman to operate the radio, he'll probably bit a bit smarter than the average firie that I've encountered.
  15. I hope he's not with Ryanair or he'll be pushed to buy a new bicycle.
  16. If a pilot is actively flying and is currently competent, then a flight review should be simple. Quote from CASA: A flight review should include training, and an assessment. Training is included to bring you back up to the required standard of competency, if you need it. (My emphasis) My point is don't get taken for a ride (pun intended) by anyone seeing the process as potential for an extended income generating activity. It should judge competency at the level that could reasonably be expected for the purpose.
  17. I was thinking of the foreseeable future. In regard to diesel waxing, it shouldn't be an issue unless buying then flying from the extremes of climate and incorporating a bit of high altitude flying. For most recreational aviators its unlikely to be an issue.
  18. Don't even think about hand starting an injected 912.
  19. Maybe once somebody comes up with an efficient fuel cell, but battery technology still has some way to go.
  20. The idea is that they can run on good quality diesel or Avtur. They could probably run on kerosene if you had to.
  21. I really cannot comprehend what this is trying to achieve. When I did my UK PPL there was a requirement for an hours 'instrument appreciation", at least I think that was the term used. The aim was to scare you stupid from going into IMC and show how quickly you could die. Two hours isn't going to do much more. I had quite a number of hours of real I/F experience before I did my PPL, but as they weren't with instructors I couldn't log them. It annoyed the hell out of the instructor that tried to trip me on on my 'appreciation' session! As for : (ii) at least 2 hours of dual instrument time, 1 hour of which is conducted during dual instrument flight time; I'm assuming that means one of the hours can be on a sim.
  22. That would be one in the chops for Siemens, cheap Chinese labour versus cheap slave labour. Oops, its probably not polite to mention Siemens 1940s activities.
  23. Man powered aircraft have also crossed the channel. I reckon it says a lot about Siemens belief in their technology.
  24. The flight had been cleared by French and UK authorities, Siemens said no at the last minute. Hardly good publicity.
  25. Interesting to read that Siemens barred them from taking the Pipistrel on a flight across the English Channel this week.
