  1. I reckon thats a pretty tidy set of circuits, CPL standard. I love when the windsock shows and easterly breeze, but its actually westerly. The windsock at YRED lies. I departed on 07 on Wednesday morn, windsock showing an easterly, but rolling down the runway you figure out pretty quick its a tail wind.
  2. Can I say one thing. Aviation safety has constantly improved over the years. If there is a way to make things safer then why would anyone in their right mind want to avoid that? I just started flying an aircraft with Traffic Information, and I am in total shock at how many aircraft I pass that I have not seen and clearly have not seen me. We all know (or should) the issues with the human eye and how the brain processes visual information. I just dont understand the mentality of not wanting to have a radio. WRT to radio issues, a radio by no means should be an excuse for not maintaining good airmanship, its just a tool to aid it.
  3. Warwick will be one of my regular spots now that I have escaped the 25nm boundaries of my RPL. Got a question, I flew up there on new years eve on a whim, and I was reading about landing fees. Apparently there is a $10 fee that works on an honour system. I looked in the terminal building but there was no info. There was also no info on where to tie down for the night or any parking charges. Being new years eve, ringing the council number was pointless. I ended up asking one of the people from the gliding club where to park and he showed me the tie-downs in front of the terminal, so I stopped there for the night. Anyone who has been to Warwick will tell you its an a-class airstrip, so I dont mind forking out $10 for landing there.
  4. I will be heading to Jimbour provided the weather is ok. Taking the wife and she does not do turbulence well so lets hope its not too hot (or the sky is blue enough to climb above it)!! I will be flying a 172 (VH-RAQ) since my favorite 182 was already booked :(
  5. Well its the first time I have renewed it.. Dont worry, I feel like a right idiot at this point.
  6. Thats what happens when you dont read shit properly, assuming that they just printed a new one and sent it to you after doing appropriate criminal checks.
  7. Nope, I just thought the online application was exactly that. Read my ninja edit above
  8. I followed the link on the CASA website. Might give them a call tomorrow and find out whats up. I did the renewal mid November based on the 6 week estimate provided on line. My old ASIC expired in December. EDIT. I am stupid. I just read the automated email that says I have to print the application and post it...
  9. Really? Everything about it says CASA. But there ya go. Not a new application, did a renewal via the new website (aviation ID Australia).
  10. Just pointing out the hypocrisy in your statement. CLARC are doing well.. I am still waiting for new ASIC 8 weeks on though.
  11. I find this ironic from a right wing christian senator who basically thinks we should be teaching children to be stupid. Marco Rubio contradicts himself with every thing he says. The reason America is suffering is because of idiots like him. I mean this is the guy who is anti-abortion to the extent that he things it should be illegal for a woman to seek an abortion in the case of rape and incest.
  12. New airfield, uncommon airfield, I draw a mud map with circuit directions, direction I am arriving from, Elevation, over-fly height, circuit height, approximate base-to-final alt. Once I write it down, I usually dont need it, but always have it handy in case. I also draw in an arrow with the forecast wind direction.
  13. As a relative noob to flying, I needed no intro to prop danger. As a boatie, I just stay away from them. As a pilot, the prop is bigger and more deadly, so even more reason not to trust it. I always do a mag check before shut down, and I wont go near the prop arc unless I confirm that the master is off and the mags are off. And I dont trust what anyone else says. I am a sparky by trade and I have been bitten before by trusting others. Further more, I was also taught how to handle a prop when I have to touch it. I hate spinning the things even when I know everything is dead.
  14. Is there any real number on jab v rotax engines failure?. When I mean numbers, I mean rate of failure rather than absolute.
  15. I have 16gb iPads, plenty enough for ozrunways. I had a 13" MBA too, but I retired it and replaced it with an Asus Zenbook. Had to many performance problems with the MBA.
  16. Try it sometime, you will be surprised.
  17. Going to have to disagree, there is always a wrong way to do things. In aviation, you need to be anal. Those who are not do not remain in aviation for very long.
  18. Depends which use you are reffering too. If in procedural class C do you get assigned a transpoder code. Class D airports is there any that use SSR for separation. Ie, as per AIP ENR 1.1 para 8.1 "Class D airports where ATC Surveillance service is provided" Sunny Coast has radar, but its a feed from Brisbane, which goes via canberra so the delay means they cant use it for separation, hence the reason for procedural separation.
  19. As a matter of curiosity, does procedural class C still require the use of a unique transponder code? I imagine it would given you can transit from procedural class C to SSR class C.. Also, did we ever determine if there are any Class D airports/airspace in Australia that use SSR?
  20. With Procedural Class C above, just like Alice Springs.
  21. Not what the AIP says. As stated earlier, its says that some Class C airports/airspace use procedural separation. Out resident ATC's have confirmed that some Airports (Tamworth for example) have no SSR separation.
  22. Make sense to me. The power supplies these days are switch mode. The more power you draw, the more switching occurs to feed the current draw. A good design will filter out switching noise, a cheapie may not.
  23. Just noticed that this info is available on the VNC, ie, if you look at Coffs Harbour, VNC says that Brisbane operates class C above. Look at Alice Springs and it says that the tower controls the Class C above.
  24. Awesome, thanks for the info. Another question, if I am using flight following, once Williamtown control services are terminated, do I need to re-request or will the MIL controllers pass you back? I might plan a day trip to Coffs in the near future and will make a point of using flight following. I have also never flown Class G->C->D (coffs) either, so good chance to have a go at that. The aircraft I am flying is ADS-B equipped by the way. I think we need an ATC sticky mega thread. I have so many questions!
