  1. This is not true also. Although it the resin may be cured at lower temps, once cured it requires much higher temps to fail. Infact, using heat to cure epoxy it actually increases the temperature at where failure occurs. For aerospace, its my understanding that the you must use resins that have a high failure temp (Tg) and from memory I think the actual decomposition temperatures are high than the melting point of aluminium (although I would not like to be quoted on that one!) This is fairly typical for hull construction in the maritime industry.
  2. No offence, but the quality of any aircraft is dependent on the builder regardless of the material. Your suggestion about regular checking of components is not restricted to aircraft built with composite materials. Your choice about when to fly a carbon aircraft is extremely flawed.
  3. As carbon fibre user in sailing, the stuff should not delaminate. Delamination is a builder issue, not a product issue. Repair is much easier (stronger are more long lasting) than metals, but you need someone that knows what they are doing. Just be warned, carbon fibre corrodes everything (galvanic corrosion) so make sure the carbon itself never makes contact with any metal parts. UV problem has nothing to do with carbon, but everything to do with the resin. UV stabilised resins with a good UV stable paint and you will never have an issue. Almost none of the carbon fibre parts on my boat have paint, and the boat lives in the sun and never has a problem. I also know may other sailors that use carbon masts that are 15-20 years old with no issues. Dont be scared of carbon fiber, used well its much better than any metal. Then again, we yachties run it on the edge of strength to save weight and when it fails it sends a million spears of stuff harder than any metal toward you. Aluminium on the other hand just buckles and bends!
  4. I paid for premium and got the AOPA stuff. I was unaware of the backup tablet part, was wondering why the new iPad mini worked without paying more. Anyway, NICK, when I was doing my PPL there was several ALA's that we visited that were not in the ERSA, but required the AOPA directory. The club had a copy, but I figured that it was worth spending the extra on OzRunways to have a copy myself. I have since used it several times. Sometimes there will be an ERSA entry for an ALA, but the AOPA one has better information.
  5. Just like to point out that this is a common fallacy. Its actually dihedral that is mostly responsible for yaw induced roll in GA aircraft. The increase in speed of the outside wing is negligible, especially in most smaller aircraft..
  6. The forum owner was concerned about off topic responses recently, this is the type of response that should be stopped. If you have nothing of value to contribute to a serious matter, then keep your trap shut. This is one of the biggest problems with RAAus, or at least a perceived problem from those of us outside of RAAus looking to become involved. BLA82, I think you will find any engine failure will be a routine reportable matter, so keep an eye on the ATSB reports.
  7. They are not real friendly to anyone that is not spending time at the resort at the moment.. Given the current economic climate, you think they would be begging for local visitors. Those of us who are boaties have seen that before at couran cove.
  8. I run a small phpbb site, cost next to nothing, never been hacked. I do it for the same reason as davidh.
  9. Not relevant to NZ (or might be, would have to check), but in Australia the 2 best methods are GE 28 Degrees Mastercard, there is no transaction fees for currency conversion, and Citibank Plus Visa Debit that also has no fees for currency conversion. I use both when travelling abroad. Master Card for credit transactions, and Visa Debit for cash transactions.
  10. Good on you. I not long ago completed my PPL, doing it for more or less the same reason as you (in fact there is a lot of common things between what you posted and myself!!) Hold off on the events with RQAC for now and focus on getting the PPL done. Given you are doing it for recreation, you will have heaps of time for the social events once you have finished your PPL.
  11. Another forum I was a part of started heavily moderating off topic posts. Place got to boring to be a part of, needless to say I am not longer there. I dont think there is an excessive amount of off topic stuff here, I just signed on for the day, 11 new updates, only 2 off topic and one relates to photo storage. What you have here is good, I dont think you should change it.
  12. Given the above mentioned device shows barometric pressure one would assume its using pressure sensors to obtain alt rather than other methods such as GPS?
  13. English Language is not on my licence, but it is noted in the CASA self service portal.
  14. I am not a fan of those conditions either, in fact I prefer landing over take-off in gusty crosswinds. On the weekend, I was at my personal limits. I pre-warned my wife that if a bullet (strong gust) came through as I was attempting to land, that I would just power up and go around. No point trying to salvage a landing if its going pear shaped. Better off with a bit of speed so you have some control authority.
  15. I have done the same with the new YCAB CTAF frequency. Not that hard is it?
  16. What about the EMU? OTOH, you have the Albatross. I reckon they are like the A380 of the avian world, friggin impressive bird those ones. The Pelican is not far behind either, maybe the 747 equivalent.
  17. Brent, if you were not scared off by that crosswind today, you will be a natural! It was pretty rugged at YRED. I got close to testing my personal limits today!
  18. The great thing about aviation is you only need one statistic and we should learn a lesson. RAA has a HUGE problem in the fact they manage the accidents and they are the governing body. Its the single most idiotic and stupid thing about RAAus. In GA, ATSB can critisize CASA, you think that will happen in RAAus? Furthermore, that silly segregation means that any statistics are not correlated. Where is the sense in that? There is common sense, and the lack of it results in over regulation. If people stopped being so pigheaded about this stuff it would not be an issue. Private farm, no traffic, no radio, no issue. Public fly-in to an airshow with many people, many aircraft, use common sense and carry a radio. I just fail to understand why this is an issue?
  19. Today is the first day in a while since I have flown analogue cockpit, so I prepared all my paper flight plans and had all the necessary charts. Still had a GPS in the aircraft, but realised on taxi that it did not know Jimbour, and I think it thought that Kilcoy was at Archerfield or Amberly or something in that direction, so I rapidly reverted to paper to be safe. Had the iPad Mini on my knee again, and beside ozrunways briefly crashing when I changed the flight plan to include YKCY it worked a treat. Was better than the certified GPS in the plane.
  20. Thanks for organising it Graham, our mob thoroughly enjoyed it. Was a bit hectic at Redcliffe, certainly tested my crosswind limits today, but enjoyable none the less! (Even the boss had fun for most of it!)
  21. I landed at Toowoomba in 25 knots of crosswind on my PPL test. It was a bad landing, I was off center and I really thumped it down. It was one of my worst landing since going solo. I thought I had failed the test at that point, in hindsight I should have done a go-around. In fact, I should have opted out of the test that day because I knew what the wind would end up doing given the fact I am a sailor, but the forecast was marginally good so I opted to go for it. Had 3 or 4 failed attempts at the PPL test due to weather so I was mad keen to get it done. Coming into Redcliffe, there was near on 25 knots of crosswind too. As the ATO said to me, you fly out of Redcliffe, get over it. My landing at YRED was much better. 15 knots crosswind is not uncommon at Redcliffe, so you get used to it. I am happy with 20 knots, but over that I am uncomfortable. When I flew out of San Carlos in the US we had 30G35 crosswind, I would not do that on my own, its not fun at all, but the instructor there was used to it and for me it was a good (yet very scary) experience. I learned a lot from flying in the US.
  22. I should have posted up my circumnavigation of Fraser Island. Done in a 172, took a while! Redcliffe-Sunny Coast-Double Island Point--> Around Fraser Island --> Marybourough (full stop) - Gympie - Redcliffe. I think it was about 3.7 hours on the clock. I have a heap of pics from my phone, but have not uploaded them to a web friendly format yet. Here is one I have uploaded, Indian Head, about half way up Fraser Island.
  23. A friend of mine just told me I need to go check out Clifton. I am going to take him up to Wellcamp for a look, so might visit Clifton as well. He has never been in to Warwick, so sounds like the day will be redcliffe-clifton-warwick-redcliffe
  24. I just wanted to say, I used the iPad Mini for a decent trip on Thursday. I left Redcliffe, circumnavigated Fraser Island, landed at maryborough then went home via Gympie. I had a full paper plan and paper charts and used them as my primary form of navigation (I lie, I had a g1000 I used too!!) but I also fully utilised the iPad as well. 3.7 hours flight time, the iPad mini went like a champion. Had the big one as standby just in case but never needed it. Had the mini sitting on my knee for the best part, without a kneeboard holder case thingie. I am sold. Still learning to use ozrunways to its full capability, but so far so good. Not willing to trade the paper in just yet, but making inroads to maybe looking at that option in the future!
