A new Nynja in the area

Thanks for the info and pics, Mike. That's just what I wanted to know. I have a compass in the same place you did (at first) with the same problems. That venerable (and mandatory) gizmo does just one thing, so we may as well set it up to do it right.

And the method of calibration you used makes a lot of sense. With ground compass swinging, I suppose you never know if the mix of cockpit magnetic interference will match cruise flight values. And flying gps rectangles and doing the maths seems like quite a complicated exercise.

Anyway, all the best.

Hi Gary

Attached are some better images of the compass installation.

Regards

Mike

Thanks Mike. Very useful.

So you've found that the compass is not being deviated at all by any of the panel electronics.

I see that some Skyranger folks place theirs up near the top aileron cable pulley. But that's more suitable for the spherical maritime models than the vertical card type you have.

Anyway your installation looks fantastic; so easily readable there; and the way the vertical ones operate in the 'correct' sense - just like a DG - is fantastic.

Plus, your being able to have total faith in its accuracy now makes it totally useful - as opposed to being the compulsory encumbrance that many are seen as these days.

Nice lay out Garfly.

I get no interferrence at its present location. The two dots under the card are the adjustment screws for the deviation magnets. The green one on the left is the North south orintation adjustment and the yellow on the right is the east west adjustment.

Cheers

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I didn't make that clear. That's not my SKRA, it's just a pic I grabbed from the internet to illustrate what I was saying about some folks placing their compasses way up there.

Anyway, all the best, hope to catch up with you up there one day.

gary.

Look like all going well Mike ya getting some air time. I been busy with work so not much for me :-(

Yep. I'm totally wrapped with the Nynja. Did an oil change yesterday and flew 1/2 hour this morning. Down here the air was very murky / smog type air so decided not to fly across the hills to the coast and just stuck around the airfield and then flew to Eton and back. Gave her a full wash down so sparkeling now. Up to 21.5 hours on the airframe so have 3.5 to go. Hoping to go catching tomorrow (Get some fish in the esky.) Back at work Monday so should get a flight in Tuesday and Wednesday mornings before work all going well. Look forward to catching up in near future.

Regards

Very green up your way Mike.

Had nice flying weather Sunday morning and set off for a nav cross country with my local instructor, enjoyed the condions and learnt more things. Have a solo XC planned to the north for this weekend and hoping for decent weather. This should then finalise my xc endorsement requirements.

Ahh, Mike I do so miss the full clear doors of my Nynja.

Hi Scott and everyone. Yesterday (Sunday) I fitted the aileron trim (did not have any need to use on the flight) and then D.I'd and took off for my solo nav to Bowen in the Nynja, 92 n/mls each way and set the cruise IAS speed at 80 kts up and 88 back with the head wind effect. (1.1 hrs up and 1.3 return) I could have flown quicker but there was no hurry, used 40 liters of fuel and had 86 liters in tanks. Had a pleasant flight to Bowen and a good run home with cloud building all the time. Some images attached to show what the area is like. I'm totally enjoying fliying the Nynja a great aircraft. Will get to some flyins and other meets next year.

Cheers Mike and have a merry Xmas with nice weather at the end of the week.

  • 4 weeks later...

Did my final cross country test flight today. All signed off in my log book now. Nice conditions. Got a nynja shadow image in a rainbow circle on a cloud over a hill; one of the way points on the way. Got a bug splat to the windscreen at 2,500 feet. Looking forward to some flights now to other airfields away from Mackay area.

Cheers

A bug at 2,500 feet? I'm sure that bug is still completing his/her Nav training.

Yep, I got the last thing that went through its brain on the windscreen in three places. Other than that; a nice flight. When I got back I fitted a gopro mount so plan to re do the flight and roll the video for it.

Cheers
