I always thought it was funny that in military pics in the 70s those sitting in front had to have clenched fists on the knees & those standing hands clenched behind the back. Mine are the same. Looks like the top brass were allowed to fold their arms in front in the 77 sqn pic. Must symbolise rank.

The guy centre of the front five is the Squadron CO..two on his left are USAF exchange pilots. We usually had a couple on rotation through Vietnam , they would just come to fly the Mirage, if they could fit into them !..they usuall had hundreds of hours combat time over Nam in F4s or F100s and often had had actual ejections after SAM hits. Generally they were Majors. On his right is the junior squadron engineering officer (ex pilot) , the second row are all the Squadrons pilots except for the older guy with the sunglasses who I believe was also an engineering officer. The warrant offices , flight Sergents, etc on down behind that. I worked closely with all the pilots and each one have memories for me. The tall guy second from right with the knock knees was killed in a Mirage crash after only a week in the squadron up in the Hunter Valley. The pilot on the old engineering officers right was the guy I flew with in the Mirage dual. The pilot third from right with folded arms is Bazz Turner..he was the squadrons deadliest shot...top gun at the time.

Hadn't really noticed the folded arms before...thanks for mentioning it...............Maj...

Also, the three men in the middle were allowed to be photographed without a neck tie.

Major could you check your logbook for the call sign of NSPC's 185 in that photo, i'm pretty sure we did not obtain DGL until 76 0r later. Jim Hazelton owned it first at Wedderburn

She was a C180 Steve...VH- CYJ ....did many jumps from her, including the very first load into Elderslie one Sat morn with Bob Barry and a couple of others..probabily flown by Harry Swain aka Harry the horse. I believe the NSPC owned her outright, still going strong when I left for the States in 77...very reliable plane as I recall..probabily wore her out in the end !...another shot taken at Cessnock airport about the time we were offered Elderslie...at the time we had been jumping into a paddock up the highway around Rutherford, bout where they are building the freeway now......I think John Goth standing and Brenden ? On the right side of the cheepo..or is it a PC ?......image.jpg.06b726979974eaaf97810fed12c26462.jpg

You will notice the three without ties, also have short sleeves. A tie is not worn with short sleeves in service dress.
