Finally undertaking my boyhood dream of becoming a pilot. Just want to express that this is a fantastic site and place rich with valuable information. I look forward to sharing my experiences and learning from all the experienced (and similarly new) pilots within this community. JabiruWeekendWarrior Posted February 6, 2012 Share Posted February 6, 2012 Welcome Jack, I learned to fly at Tooradin, It may take a little longer to learn due to constant crosswind. The crosswind become reassuring after awhile and I find landing straight into wind harder. In your profile aircraft is J170, What aircraft are you having lessons with, J160/ J170. I'm getting the feeling that I'll be contending with cross-wind landings rather frequently. Oh well, the more experience the better. Gareth, you're a little bit ahead of me - glad you're loving it, I'm certain that I will be too. I already am! Ron, my first lesson was in the J170. You will end up a better pilot than those who constantly shy away from cross-winds and then get caught at an aerodrome with no into wind runway, often with a poor outcome. As you progress past solo, take the opportunity to fly in all sorts of (safe but challenging) weather conditions while you have your instructor on-board to guide you. When I went for my initial license check (a long time ago now), my instructor was sweating it wouldn't be a calm day, for he'd not been able to show me how to land in calm conditions... The other day I had to take off with nil Crosswind - and it just felt weird! I find Crosswind to be seriously good fun - so by the sounds of it, you'll have a ball! Good luck with your training! I've got some family who live nearby in Beaufort. I'm looking forward to visiting them down the track, flying into YBLT. Should shave off a couple of hours travel time when the day comes. Tooradin's surrounds certainly are very picturesque - a good thing I'm only 20 minutes drive from the airfield too. :) I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into some good cross-wind ops... What a fantastic setup you have there - and it looks like the Karatoo is coming along nicely. Is that a 4 1/2" reflector telescope I can see in the back of your workshop? I hope the build progresses positively. --- And hi Frank and Kaz, Frank, I've got plenty of time to eventually try my hand at the drifter.
