The whole house will have to be rewired according to the sparky I asked ,about getting it done .

Plus they don't want that job .

PS. : when  this house becomes vacant due to our age . I won't be worrying.  Tear it down to build another ' mini mansion ' .

What about your SAFETY in the Meantime?  The days of people getting electrocuted should be over.  Nev

Get those earth return circuit Breakers installed or you are NOT legal. They will POP instantly when some thing is wrong and a proper electricians screwdriver will indicate which wire is active. Nev

If you use an "electrician screwdriver " make sure that you test it prior to and after identifying potential on a conductor

Electrocution active to neutral is not protected by an earth leakage circuit Breaker

For clarification the wiring from your meter box to all of the 3 pin sockets and light fittings in your house is generally TPS (thermoplastic-sheathed cable) and is called "twin core and earth" and comes in numerous diameters. In most houses lighting circuits are 1.5mm, 3 pin socket cables are 2.5mm with things like ovens and cooktops 4mm to 6mm. It all depends upon the current required and the distance the wire has to run. The colours are Live = RED, Neutral = BLACK and Earth = Yellow/Green. That's it. Wiring from the socket or fitting is usually Live=Brown, Blue = Neutral & yellow/Green =Earth. Specialist equipment with comms capability can be different colours depending on the job it has to do.

You need a RCD (residual current device) for this protection. These can be combined as a RCCB (residual current circuit breaker). I have these installed in my house.

An RCD, an RCCB and Earth leakage  circuit Breaker are all the same device.  They measure the current to the load, and the current from the load, if they are not equal the current that is different will magnetically open the circuit Breaker.  Regularly test them by pressing the test button.   If the current goes through you and returns through the earth there will be a residual current and trip, BUT if it goes back through the path leakage Breakers there is no residual then there is no trip.  You are electrocuted.

rcd & RCCD ",Breakers " in your house distribution panel  .

My house hasn't got one , & as advised I called a reputable electrician,  who promptly refused the job . Even without talking dollars ,  my two ( or is it three ) family sparkies are far too  busy

To bother with it .

One booked for a ' Vietnam ' tour.

One booked for ' Japan's " drift racing season " .

The other busy upgrading ' hovels ' to houses .

" Such is life "
