  3. For those following, I got the registration renewal email today. That's about 7 weeks. Only a few days since Middo rang me back to say he'd look into it though. Now I just have to remember how to fly.
  4. When I did my through bolts I did the studs too. I had to because one of the two nuts which stripped themselves during the 25 hours after putting new nuts (old style because this was a week before the AD for the 12 point nuts so of course they didn't give me the new ones - or even mention the upcoming mod) on was on a stud. Two of the studs came out fairly easily with heat on the crankcase and locked nuts on the stud. The other two were a bitch. Had to drive splines onto them to get enough purchase. It was all done without a full strip though. Just for information of others who may want to try. I didn't like the idea of leaving the old studs in place. The original problem was stripping of nuts when rebuilding. Calibrated wrench, but two nuts stripped anyway. An expert had a look and said that the nuts didn't match the bolts. On checking 25 hours after putting the new set on successfully, I found 2 had stripped themselves. Must have been a gnats member away from engine failure. The crankcase was only holding together through race memory.

RAAus may be able to stop me getting back to the Great Eastern Fly-in this year, but no amount of ineptitude from them can prevent me enjoying the finer arts. Music like that can get you soaring without wings. Just for El Ratto's sake, Romancing the Wind doesn't mean finding a woman who will put up with you farting in bed.

  9. Then I must be special too ozzie. 1 month now and still grounded. I too got the "final notice". The office lady I spoke to said that was an automated process and they couldn't stop them all. She said to ignore it. Not holding out much hope of getting to the Great Eastern. Not even sure of Natfly at this stage. As I fly a Morgan, I might get caught up in the witch hunt. That is - even further than I have already.
  10. I have the other extreme. I got a renewal notice in early Nov, rego expired in late Nov, and today I got a rego overdue notice. Salt, wound. Shirley they're trying to upset me?
  11. Sure do. Haven't been able to play basketball for 6 weeks due to running out of cartilage in my knee. So my front is getting bigger than my back. Plane's right though. Or did you mean Wankers and Bastards? I have an issue with those.
  12. I just got a call from a volunteer who is looking at my rego. I'm missing the MTOW placard and they need another photo of the "if you fly in this thing you'll die" placard and then I should be right. Woohoo. However, the volunteer turned out to be dodo from this forum. I just want to thank him for giving his time to help out like this. As he said, he had his whinge here and decided he had better do something constructive. It's all about balance. Thanks mate.
  13. So it looks like I won't be going to the Great Eastern fly-in. Bastards. At least they aren't being pressured into working long hours, missing holidays, making an effort. I feel much better. Just bought some kit for RC Model flying. Not much bureaucracy capable of grounding that activity.

  15. Andy, I call shenanigans on your advice from a board member. I went to last year's meeting. There were more than 20 there. More people than satisfaction in fact. Shouldn't the minutes reflect the number of attendees? You were there Mr Isaacs. What say you? Still grounded though.
  16. Hi Mr Camp David (not that there's anything wrong with that). I've been waiting until I get a round tuit. I have a bid in on eBay for one. I'll see how that goes. The above mentioned crap has convinced me to use the "buy it now" option.
  17. Update on the RAAus website: "Management is aware that there is a communication problem, but we're not about to start talking to the members about it." As of today, I can no longer fly. I tried to renew 2 weeks ago, was led to believe a computer problem would delay that by a day, then told that renewals would resume last Friday and I would be contacted if there was a problem. No contact, no registration, no flying, no happy. I'll be at the meeting Andy.
  18. Mach is a relative term. It is the ratio of air speed to the local speed of sound. So if you can do mach 1 at 10,000', then you should be able to do it at sea level. Unless the humidity comes into play (as stated earlier). That might be the reason I guess. More humidity at sea level, less compressibility because the Oxygen and Nitrogen molecules of the air are replaced by lighter water molecules. That was Wiki says anyway. I don't mind citing Wiki. Of course, I never finished school.
  19. Nope. The factors affecting the speed of sound through a gas are temperature, pressure and density. However, pressure and density have equal but opposite effects - thus cancelling each other out. So in an ideal gas, this leaves temperature (or the adiabatic index) as the only variable. Air is not ideal, so humidity also has a small but measurable effect. Here endeth the lesson. This was condensed from the Wikipedia entry. I was sure only fairly sure, so I looked it up.
  20. Also, this was a DH-84 Dragon. The Dragon Rapide was the DH-89. Australia continued using the DH-84 because it used the same engine as the Tiger Moths we already had. The EPIRB simply ran out of battery. I left on Sunday and it was already challenging. Heading to Kingaroy I had to fly through lots of light rain and 3 levels of cloud. Very weird and moist atmosphere.

  22. Has everyone got me on ignore? I gave the reason for the Ibis grounding straight from the horse's mouth (CASA at least) and you're all still speculating about manufacturer approvals. Columbia is not an ICAO signatory. I'm just going to slink away again. Russell, I really feel for you. This action, the witch hunt against Garry Morgan, and the other LSA crap could be handled with a lot more humanity and sh1tload less bureaucracy without affecting safety outcomes whatsoever. As Mick said, he took on the agency when it was already type approved. To revoke the approval and ground the aircraft simply compounds their mistake. There are probably other ICAO approved countries who have approved the Ibis. The simple solution is to accept their approval. I'm getting disillusioneder by the minute.
  23. Mick Poole gave a talk on LSAs at Monto yesterday. There is a move in many countries worldwide to straighten it all out. It's not just Oz. He has responsibility in CASA to get it right here. The problems are legion, but the issue with the Ibis is simple. LSAs must be approved/certified in their country of manufacture. That country must also be an ICAO member state. Columbia isn't. However, grounding them first and then working out how to resolve the issue is ridiculous. They don't fly any different to the way they did last week. There are people relying on the planes they bought in good faith for their livelihoods. They were LSA when they bought them. Mick said this was RAA's call.
  24. Awesome. Terry had it at Evans Head a few years ago. He's built a gas powered machine gun of his own design. He did some strafing runs which made us duck for cover. Don't mention the war. He was also at Narromine 2 weeks ago in another warbird. Can't remember what though.
