  1. Hi Marty Sorry to say I'm only an occasional pax for work in the MD500E. I took that pic on a SAR Op recovering a deceased hunter from the bush using human sling method. Peter
  2. Hi Mark I find full flap useful for shorter strips. ( paddocks for example with 200 m between fences either end) especially as my figures show about a five knot difference between clean and full flap stall. However even on these shorter strips half flap is more than enough to launch out. Pretty much if you can get in you can get out. Peter
  3. Hi all Makes me wonder from peering west over the ditch why it is all so complicated over your way. A plethora of different registration types, different maintenance regimes for the same frame depending whether is is amateur or "factory" built and so on. Not such great distinctions here. Makes me feel lucky, permit to fly, appropriate pilot certificate level, and two yearly static system and radio and transponder/encoder certification and all good to go in CTA. Obviously in reality there is a de facto exclusion from the very busiest airports, and approach performance parameters to be met, but still a pretty good deal. I'm unaware of any groundswell of opinion that allowing "uncertified" aircraft into CTA is the cause of any greatly increased risk. Not sure how a transponder equipped microlight transmitting CTA under ATS control poses a huge risk. Like I said makes me feel lucky over here. Peter
  4. Will be three.......there's a kit in a box in the South Wai too...
  5. I got Desser to ship to the NZ Post depot they run in the states, is there an equivalent you can use? Bound to have lost some speed with all that extra drag but if you were worried about that then you'd be flying some other type.
  6. Perhaps analyse your intended landing places. Soft? Rough? Combinations of those parameters? Think of it in terms of tyre print on the ground and radius of tyres for handling rougher surfaces and that might help your decision. Larger tyres better for rolling over stuff but downsides too; weight, drag, and higher loading on axles and other associated structures. All a compromise like everything else. Peter
  7. http://www.desser.com/Aircraft-Tires-and-Tubes/21800-6-4-PLY.asp This one listed at $110 USD plus about $50USD for a tube. Nose wheel Condor 600 x 6
  8. Hi Lyndon To fit the 600 x 6 Condor I just re drilled the axle hole a little lower to save having to make new forks and reversed the four bolts so the heads are facing the tyres. Peter
  9. Nice, what was the weight of those? Going from 15/600 x 6 600 (I think that was the size) cost me nearly 10 kg, empty I'm 305 kg now. Peter
  10. Hi Lyndon I imported these direct from Desser Tire and Rubber in the states, their service was great. The mains are Aero Classic brand, only for LSA and experimental and so can't be put on a certified GA plane. The Condor though is OK for that and came with a release form, not that it is needed for microlight here. Like lots of things in life the mains aren't quite 21" but close enough. Landed price with tubes was$900NZD, was a lot cheaper than trying to source them here. Yep, probably cost me a few knots but didn't get this frame to go fast. Did add a few pounds but well, well, worth it for strip work. The aircraft has been landed on gravel bars and the like and I also gleaned a bit more prop clearance from the change. Peter
  11. Hi Lyndon 21/800 x 6 for mains, 600 x 6 nose wheel. Very happy with these. Peter
  12. Horses for courses. There's a world of difference between completely unnecessary low level flying and low level flying for a purpose. A close in circuit at perhaps 300ft might be a completely appropriate procedure for some strips. In that case it's all about balanced flight and correct airspeed management. Thread drift anyway....
  13. Call me a pedant but I think the correct nomenclature is Bf 109
  14. No problem over here......... http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/reproduction-guns/aircraft-guns
  15. Hi Ultralights The bushing wear you describe sounds familiar. I've just had finished the yearly permit to fly inspection, found significant wear on the rudder bushings. Holes were OK, reamed them out slightly oversize, new bushings machined. 325hrs TT.
  16. Hi everyone Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I hadn't considered the possibility of an electrical fault, will be one of the things to check when I get back to the hangar. (Been away ten days hunting) This co There is no air bubble at the top of the header tank, with the intermittent nature of the light coming on an electrical misconnection could certainly be the case. Peter
  17. Thanks for the replies everyone, food for thought everywhere. I'm going to source a replacement (Aerokits??) and fit it, just trying to avoid having to unseal everyhing multiple times, would like to take it pieces just once. Down the hangar today and turned on the master, no light, couple of hours later and on turning on the master light on. No avgas has gone in during 40 hours I've put on since starting to fly the airframe in November and the previous owner only very, very rarely used avgas. Can anyone describe the actual sender unit or post a pic? Thanks Peter
  18. Hi all Over the mountains the other day at 7000ft and the low fuel light came on. Immediately could see I still had what fuel I would expect on board by looking at the sight tube in the wing root, and knowing that both tanks feed individually into the 6l feeder tank I wasn't too worried, but still stayed high till I was near the field ten minutes later. The light has been going on and off intermittently since (haven't been back up) and I can see that the feeder tank is totally full so it would seem it is a sender fault. Not having built the plane I'm not familiar with the insides so just looking to find out what to expect before I drain everything and pull it to pieces. Any advice/knowledge welcome. Thanks Peter
  19. Savannahs have full span VGs and seem by all accounts to have acceptable stall characteristics? Mine has had VGs added on the elevator.
  20. Changed......will keep the pic I took of the 500E.....when I get rich......
  21. Yep could do........sharing with an totally immaculate 2400hr C185 and a Lancair 235 that is just an absolute work of art..........
  22. Hi Bob, I'm in NZ so is registered as Class 2 microlight. Peter
  23. Hi there Built in 2006, one owner, about 250 hours on frame and 100hp ULS. Been scheming and planning and dreaming for a while now so when this one came up I went down and fell in love....managed to "arrange funding" shall we say and was just delivered today. Now I have to start learning. (All over again..I had PPL a llooonngg time ago...) Peter
  24. Hi everyone I went for a trip down south and look what somehow followed me home............
  25. Maybe this increase in MAUW will make the belly pod a useful option to enable some of the increase to be carried as baggage etc? I see in the USA andIitaly they are offered as a factory option.
