  1. That is cheap. If you put away $15 an hour towards a new engine, you could pay the $5000 each 300 hours. However, a 912 would cost the same if you put the same $15 aside for 2000 hours. I am starting to believe there is no cheaper option than hiring! On a budget of about $500 a month for flying, it's hard to own once you add up hangar rental, money aside for a new engine, insurance etc.
  2. I'm back to dreaming about buying my own aircraft, and looked at a advert on this site. It's a 582 engine. How long do they last? From what I see in posts it seems to be about 300 hours? What happens then, new engine or just maintenance? What type of cost would I face at 300 hours? Thanks for any info! Ryan
  3. Carry a jerry can and go into town and fill it up. I have found small towns are happy to send someone out in a car to get you, even if only for $50 in fuel. Cheers, Ryan

We got back Sunday. It was a great time too. It was a total of 9.9 hours flying time, from Redcliffe to Inverell, to Narromine. Then that afternoon to Gilgandrah, then back on Sunday via Millmerran. My bum was numb and back hurt after that much flying in two day. The arrival was interesting, some people were doing straight in approaches, some were doing calls like 13 miles out and 20 miles out, some were not responding to requests for position. The poor unicom guy tried hard, but we were placed over the town orbitting at the same end of town and the same altitude as a Jab. And many planes ignored his calls. I liked that the museum hangar was open, and the trade displays. It was also a collection of great planes for sale by vendors. I enjoyed looking at them all, and got a good response from the dealers. I got a personal lesson on OzRunways from those guys, and now use far more of it. Made a massive impact to me. There were a lot of planes there, but I would have liked to have seen it open to the public, so that they could walk around the planes. And more for kids or wives to do. Not much entertainment besides looking at the airshow. It was a great airshow, only thing is that is stopped you leaving when you wanted to. Add to that a hassle in getting fuel as it took a while to wait for the fuel truck, and it was frustrating if you had to leave to go to your accomodation. What was nice was that you could talk to the pilots of the airshow planes, about anything really, they were a good bunch. I would have liked some seminars on the Saturday during the day, as they were all over by the time we arrived. In fact the whole place was closing up by Saturday 3pm. I can't get there during the week, but on the weekend less is happening. But all up it was a great weekend. The ending was the best. We arrived at Caboolture at about 5pm, and there were three women in bikini's. We thought we were starved of oxygen for a while, but it turned out there was some photo shoot with cars there. See you at the next one! Ryan
  5. I've zoomed in (seeing it on an iPhone) and the lines are the nav aid ring. We can ignore that. What confused me was the two sets of limits. First C from surface to 1500. Then below it C from 1500. It makes sense when you think, they are just specifying a it in two layers, instead of saying C LL SFC. Therefore you should not be above the ground over suburban or city Adelaide. Model planes are though, and with point of view cameras those pilots dont have situational awareness of aircraft near them. And modern models can fly high.
  6. Hi I just want to check I am reading the Adelaide VTC correctly. It looks like the city, centered over Adelaide International, is class C from the surface to 1500. Then the next ring out is C LL 1500. What confuses me is that it's a black line around the airport, not the usual blue dashed one, so I'm not sure where the space starts. The reason for asking is that I am at our Adelaide office, and they are flying Point of View model aircraft, and they are in the city. Is that an issue? Cheers Ryan
  7. My understanding is that you need to do the BAK and PPL exams.
  8. I am way into the high end. I think that few do it in 20, we are not seeing so many of those who took longer as maybe they don't want to report it?

Mainly I want to know if we can't leave when the air displays are on. They are on until 5:30pm on Saturday, but I want to fly somewhere else for the night.

Got the arrival document, it's the NOTAM I want.

Anyone know when the NOTAM is out? I want to mark my map up with the Unicom frequency. Will it be 126.7?

Pilotdave, just how cold is it in that general area? Should I be bringing the fleece?

I will be the guy next to a white SportStar, wearing glasses. Come say hello! I will be finding Cazza if she is giving out both food and knowledge!
  16. I've just ordered the Bob Tait ones from Ian. Now to find a school who understands what a Pilot Certificate is in the local area - anyone recommend one in the Caboolture or Redcliffe Areas?
  17. I will message you the number of a pilot in Cairns who does this, he was the guy who taught me how to fly.

I'm going to be there, got the plane booked and the money sitting in a jar just for the weekend! I even had the WAC's spread over the lounge floor this weekend as the start to my planning! Leaving early on the Saturday. I still need to get accomodation, I'm too grumpy for a tent, probably fly to some nearby town. If you see a white SportStar and a baldish guy near it, come say hello!
  19. Is the tape saying 5ft altitude? Heaps of room. I know people who could have walked under it!
  20. Thanks for the tea and chat Bob, you have a great home and hangar on a really nice field. Please thank your wife for the hospitality too. The flight back was bumpy over the ranges, really bumpy! The wind was okay at Redcliffe until I got over the threshhold, when the windsock changed direction a few times! I was actually glad to be on the ground, but there were still people doing circuits so I'm probably just needing some more practice in turbulance and wind! Cheers Ryan
  21. Thanks! Still lots of choices. I see the prices differ a lot between authors too!
  22. Thanks for the invite Bob. I will see you on Sunday. I haven't been to your field in about 2 years. I think I will do a lazy Sunday morning flight to Watts Bridge and then Kilcoy just to say hello to anyone who is around. I'm flying a white Sportstar. Ryan
