  1. If I can get premium in town at Dirranbandi and fill up there I should be fine to get back to Redcliffe, so will avoid the $100 fee. But I have emailed them to find out. I found the aero club details at Goondiwindi and have emailed them.
  2. Got confirmation the plane is booked for the middle of October, and will start phoning the pub at Dirranbandi tonight. And making a list of what to do, this is the first overnighter. I'll stop at Goondiwindi too. I'll save Dingo Roadhouse for later and do west this time. Thats for all the inside knowledge!
  3. Looks dry to me. Whats mulga? I'll look at Dirranbandi. From Google Earth it does look more attractive, and fuel is important. I have found one post saying the servo is no longer in Bollon.
  4. Anyone been there? Its about 300 miles East of Brisbane and seems to be on the edge of the desert. Im thinking it could be a good introduction to an overnight trip. There is a little pub but I dont know if there is a servo. The strip is dirt, not sure who ownes it.
  5. Looks likecits class D airspace there under 8500, is that right?
  6. Found Dingo, had to get into better light and follow the road. Now Maj, where is this airconditioned accomodation you spoke of? The roadhouse itself or the caravan park?
  7. Is the Dingo Roadhouse on the Rockhampton VNC? I have looked but can't find it. Do you have co-ordinates please? Also, what is the runway length, direction etc, or a contact to find it? Google has given me a lot of references to it, but I can't actually find someone to call and book accomodation etc. My brother is coming over at the end of the month and I'm finding out about my bonus on Monday, so together I'm planning a road trip! 8. So has this changed? Does it mean I can avoid using Ozi Explorer and only use AirNav? I understood I had to have Ozi Explorer CE on the unit, and get a PC version of Ozi Explorer for the charts? Or at least get the charts, which seemed to be the expensive bit. Is this right: I need the unit I need Ozi Explorer CE on the unit, to make maps work? Is this the moving map part? I need some sort of planning software, either OziExplorer OR AirNav? I need the maps for use with the planning software AND the maps for the unit, but now they can all be AirNav maps, so I don't need OziExplorer PC or it's maps? Basically I want to see if I can get the paper airservices maps I'm used to on the unit, and not use OziExplorer maps. I don't know them and hence don't want to trust them. I really don't understand this and it's that which is holding me up on this I'm afraid. Sorry Ian, not trying to be dumb but it's a whole new world.
  9. I understand that you can load the route planned in AirNav onto it, but need the OziExplorer maps on the unit. AirNav doesn't work on Windows CE I understand. But then the question is, why not just go straight for Ozi Explorer on the PC and use that for flight planning? I can't answer that, as I can't find anything that tells me I get actual air related charts from Ozi. Are they just topographical maps, or are the WAC's, VNC's etc? Ryan
  10. Apparantly it's Aviation Day today. So go and get some sky, or share some aviation with someone. I've decided to take a little kid I know for a flight, if his Dad is up for it, as he is mad for planes. Ryan
  11. Forget the politics. If it wasn't a little old lady it wouldn't be on the news. She didn't check her NOTAM, and didn't have her radio on, and didn't seem to have much awareness of what two fighter jets really mean. What would the media be saying if some 23 year old flew a 172 into Brisbane controlled airspace? She deserves punishment, not praise just because people don't like the president. My comments are direction not at the people in this post, but at the several news articles I have read on this so far today. Ryan
  12. I've been there twice this year. All grassed over, I didn't feel I was going to get into sand unless I went right off the runway. I was flying a Sportstar. Bit undulating but no more than somewhere like Kilcoy. Phone in advance to see if the grass has been cut, it makes it a lot smoother if it has. There is a $20 landing fee. Contact the Trading Post there, that is the shop by the field, you can get a decent coffee there. You would need to do the circuit out to sea. Bit hilly around it. Always been 14 I have landed on, which gives you a left hand over the sea. On take off I was turning left by about 250ft. It has a slope down from the end of 14, and landing lights, so don't hit a light. I would take off downhill if the grass is long, wind permitting. It's a great spot, definately worth going to, and they need the support if we want to have such great places kept open. Ryan
  13. I've got the hotels worked out. But how do I get from Tampa to Lakeland? I can't find any public transport, except Amtrak which only goes once a day meaning I have to stay over in Tampa, and it's only 50km away!
  14. He spewed. First one. Was generally seeming distracted even as we taxi'd out, and talking in short clipped bursts, and not engaging when I tried to talk to him. But seemed okay generally. Said nothing till I asked, when he said he was quesy, and then minutes later he reached for the bag. Luckily it stayed on him, not the rental plane! I'm not sure the plastic shopping bags are the best idea, they don't open up, you need something with a wide neck that stays open. Also get the headphones off fast unless you want to replace the sponges on them! How do I record that in the log book?!? Ryan
  15. My usual hire one is in the shop, and I think I need to find an alternative as I don't know when it will be back. I hear them on the radio sometimes, does anyone know if there is a one around that gets hired? I'm sure there is one at Gympie. Bit far but needs must! Thanks Ryan
  16. The hilton is coming up as no rooms available!
  17. I've booked to arrive there on the 28th and leave on the 1st, so should have enough time to cover it. What we need is a Recreational Flying sticker to put up in the international tent so we can find each other and say hello. I am thinking of the Hilton, hoping I can just walk then. Is it close enough?
  18. Well I'm glad they are okay, but I feel I must thank them for going through this as now I know what would happen. I fly a SportStar Plus and have been wondering what would happen if the canopy opened, and in fact have had several discussions with people about it. But it sounds like it floated higher than we imagined, but all was okay.
  19. This is a basic question, but I don't really understand these thing, which is why I hesitated when I went to buy one. If I buy the hardware, what comes with it? In other words, what do I need to add on to allow it to be used in car and in plane? All the map options on the site with it? Do I need both Ozi and MapTrax and Air NAV? I want to get Air Nav for printing out maps, but do I need the others too?
  20. This is meant to be a recreational flying site, not an RA Aus site, so I suspect that is why there are few replies. Most member arn't here and those that are want to talk about planes not boards.

  22. Search for threads on cost of ownership, that will give you an idea. Try this: http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/misc-aircraft-ownership-questions.9238/#post-89801 I got the best quote from QBE on insurance. Hangars can start at $45 a week, depends on where you are.
  23. I thought you had to be 300m above them and 300m away in an aircraft?
