Plane on trailer - Monaro Hwy (hdg South)
Piet Fil replied to Piet Fil's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
That was most probably the one, he must have headed south through Cooma then Bombala to Vic. Anyone know the name of the purchaser? or the home airfield in the Latrobe Valley? Phil -
Plane on trailer - Monaro Hwy (hdg South)
Piet Fil replied to Piet Fil's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Dodo, Thanks but it was Yellow wings and Yellow body, thats why I thought it may have been 19-3566, but it was for sale in Caboolture QLD. That would make for a long road trip. Phil -
Plane on trailer - Monaro Hwy (hdg South)
Piet Fil replied to Piet Fil's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Webbm, Cooma was good, I took a mate for a flight over his house at Jindabyne and then headed up crackenback valley over Thredbo, then round Kosciuszko, over Guthega and back to Polo Flat. Got a little bumpy as we descended back to Polo Flat but not too bad. At least it was cooler at 8500' rather than on the ground! Damkia, I'm hearing you, they are a low and slow aircraft after all. Phil -
Mark, Sound advice and its good you caught it before it got worse. All the best for a swift recovery and a healthy 2013 Phil

Well Done Comps, We now know you can fly, do maths, write and read ground to map all at the same time (ha ha ha). Well done enjoy! Phil

As I was driving north along the Monaro Hwy on my way back from flying out of Cooma this morning, I passed a car towing a plane on the trailer. The plane was yellow and looked like a Grega GN-1 air camper or a Pietenpol Air Camper (possibly 19-3566?). Does any one know who it was or where the plane was headed? I ask as I am building a Pietenpol Air Camper myself and am extremely curious when I see what i think is one in my part of the country. Regards Phil

Radio problem transmitting only when flying
Piet Fil replied to horsefeathers's topic in Instruments, Radios and Electronics
Horse feathers, If you're feeling up to a bit of DIY, the following web address may be of use if you want a simple effective antenna to hang off your boom. It describes a simple dipole setup. chrusion.com/BJ7/InvVeeAntenna4ULs.pdf Phil -
My wife let me buy $3000 worth of spruce to continue my plane build a week ago.... yay! But just so I had something to open on Xmas day my wife and girls got me a Nerf Disc gun ..... been sniping my two daughters and the cats throughout the day much to their annoyance Phil

Great News Rocket...Congrats! Enjoy the continuing journey of learning that is flying (particularly your Navs! ... flying , map reading, writing and mental arithmetic all at once ... sweeeet) (Tongue in cheek) I assume you meant as a recreational pilot that instead of "Looking forward to enjoy a lifetime in the clouds :)" you meant a lifetime of flying around clouds no closer than 1500m horizontal or 1000' vertically (unless of course you're within 1000'AGL then just keeping clear of cloud)! {There has to be one in every thread and its my turn} but seriously well done its a great achievement (and nice move taking the wife for a flight ... great stuff) Phil

Well, after a bit of project hiatus, I kinda got distracted moving house and building a round yard for our horses. I finally got around to ordering some spruce from Tom and then today drove up to Newcastle to pick it up. the picture shows the 8' and 10' long 2" thick pieces of spruce. The picture doesnt show the long pieces that were on the roof rack (two 19'x6"x1" and one 16'x7"x1"). Now, after I re-jig the garage tomorrow it will be time to build a bench for empennage construction and then start machining timber to sizes. Joy o joy, building time again Phil

Be Wary of Plans from Popular Magazines
Piet Fil replied to old man emu's topic in Aircraft Building and Design Discussion
Agree totally, with what OME says, but if you, (like me), love that old Pietenpol style aircraft. A set of plans is available from Mr Jim Wills in the UK which have been engineered originally to the 1987 british BCARs requirements and the last drawing revision (Rev C) is dated 1992. So you can have that classic aircraft with the benefit of adherance to a set of airworthiness standards. Phil -
Good stuff Ayavner, this is what communityis really all about Stand proud Phil

Jaspers Brush - A Great place to fly
Piet Fil replied to Piet Fil's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Deadstick, I'm going to have to fly another one so I have a comparison but I was Bl*&dy impressed with the power in 5331. She had an awesome rate of climb at a good speed, first time I've ever had to worry about breaking out of the white arc on a takoff climb out! An honest cruise of 106kts at 2800RPM, I was more than happy. Must be the great maintenance she gets! Phil -
A big thanks to Corey and Andrew (Motz) for the famil flight in the J-230 at Jaspers Brush today. If anyone's passing through the NSW south coast I would highly recommend dropping in for a flight or even just a chat about aviation. It was a friendly crowd of people at the strip and it was a comfortable place for a stranger to turn up to. Highly recommended place to fly at. Thanks Guys Phil

Smubbs, Goulburn is the closest if you are north side and there are two schools there (Goulburn Aviation and Goulburn Flight Academy), other options are Snowy Aviation Academy at Polo Flat (Cooma), a good option if you're south side. Sadly they are the closest to Canberra so you have an hours drive either north or south to choose from. Depending which way you go I may see you there as I fly out of Polo Flat mostly. Hope this helps Phil

That is pretty cool ...... really. Phil
