  1. Have a look at this site OME http://www.carlsonaircraft.com/struts.html cheers John
  2. As far as I know it's going ahead just beside the threshhold of 36. This is the same council that cut a 1/4 off the Casino runway and installed a mobile home park right under the approach to 10. They also allow drag racing on the runway about 4 times a year. Real muppets. cheers John
  3. Nev said" everything there is covered with salt from the sea spray. Aeroplanes don't last long in that environment". No worse than Tyagarah it can be managed. Dole bludgers and retirees are not the problem, council is based at Casino. Lots of Evans Head locals wish they were in Ballina Shire. cheers John
  4. Sorry Oneplaneboy but no hire aircraft but if you have a glider ticket Byron Gliding Club have gliders for members. cheers John
  5. Welcome Oscar Papa Bravo. I'm a member of Tyagarah Aero Club which is not too far from Lismore. If you are going past on the highway call in and say hello there is usually someone there most mornings. We get together every Saturday morning from 9.30 for coffee and tea and hold a sausage sizzle on the fourth Sunday each month. Lismore do something similar on the second Sunday (tomorrow) as well. There's a good community of flyers in this area who will make you very welcome. cheers John
  6. My BFR was due last week. I was going to combine it with a navex towards my xc endo but the stars didn't line up so Sunday morning left ytyh with a bit of a norwester blowing heading for Lismore and Wayne. He gave me his usual going over and I'm signed off for another two years. I was planning to go to Casino for their BBQ but thought I'd be clever and head back to Tyagarah befor the wind got up. When I noticed the ground was not going backwards as fast as I would have liked I realized I could of gone to Casino after all. Averaged 24kts with the wind increasing the closer I got to the coast and when I got to Coorabell ridge I could have turned the engine off and just soared back and forth. Heaps of whitecaps on the sea and on short final I haven't had as much fun since the last visit to the dentist. Anyway the Drifter is still usable and it was still a nice flight. cheers John
  7. Welcome Brian. You should feel quite at home as a very large percentage of the new arrivals 200 odd years ago were Irish. cheers John
  8. Yes Darren they're hard to beat. cheers John
  9. Thank you all for the warm welcome. Yes Spin it's on the 27th, hope to see you there. John
  10. Just found this forum and was pleasantly surprized that it was full of familiar names that I hadn't seen for a bit. My name is John and I fly a Drifter out of Tyagarah on the NSW north coast. Hope to meet lots of good people and tap into such a large reservoir of experience.I'm very new to forums and the curious things that happen in them but looking at this one it seems very positive. cheers John
  11. When we changed over to the E box on the 503 we used a Deka (not sure of the model) which has plenty of cranking amps. Weight was around 5kg which offset the extra on the gearbox and I still need 5kg ballast in the nose. cheers John
  12. Although I'v only been a member a short time I'm saddened to hear that someone who has created such a great thing as these forums should be abused for their efforts. I wish you all the best in the future. regards John
  13. Tyagarah Aero Club holds a sausage sizzle on the fourth Sunday of each month. We start about 10.30am and go as long as the food lasts. Tea and coffee, sausage on a bun etc for five bucks. Tyagarah is a great place to fly into with Cape Byron just south and lots of whales to ooh and aah over. Runway is 05/23 grass and ctaf 126.7. Venue is the last hanger on the left at the end of the taxiway. cheers John
  14. That should swing a decent size prop compared to direct drive Jab or VW. I'd thought about a VW with redrive. I'm got plans for a FFP Dakota Hawk so I can take herself flying out of the wind but I have'nt given up the biplane lust. cheers John
  15. Hello OME, what are you planning to use for an engine? I'm interested as I've had a thing for the Gere Sport ever since I saw the Shaws radial version. cheers John
  16. A little while back at Tyagarah ALA I gave joining downwind, base and final full stop rwy 23 as I saw the skydive Caravan taxying. Just as I was rounding out the Caravan announced entering and backtracking 23 which he did forthwith. Caravans look quite large from head on. He heard all the calls but said he assumed I was doing a touch and go. Not certain what that had to do with it. So even with all the radio calls in the world it's no substitute for see and avoid. ps he wasn't rude. I believe he held a CPL. cheers John

  18. Thanks Ian, that tutorial was great. cheers John
  19. No Dazza those sauages are reserved for the high end boutique eateries at Byron Bay.
  20. I should have added that we start from about 10.30AM. cheers John
  21. Anyone in the Northern Rivers/S.E. Qld area looking for somewhere to fly Tyagarah Aero Club has a sausage sizzle (try Vince Devines award winning sausages from Mullumbimby) on the fourth Sunday of every month. Cost is just 5 bucks including tea and coffee etc. cheers John
  22. Reading this thread it seems that if there is a problem the SOP is to gain altitude asap and if the problem is insurmountable then bailout. Some racers with this in mind may think shoulder harness straps would impede their getting out quickly and opt for lap strap only. Just a thought. cheers John
  23. It was about 300mm high and wide, semicircular, Geoff. As soon as we removed it the flutter reduced to just the normal Drifter woofle. Wayne Fisher makes his extensions narrower than this so I'v cut the sides of ours and will try again. Graeme John here at Tyagarah has vast Drifter experience and said it can take very little to create extra turbulence at the tail. Hope this is of assistance. cheers John
  24. It would be very interesting to see what, if anything, Honda did to this engine when produced for their outboard marine application. Marine use is similar, I think, to aviation with max power to get the boat up and planing then continuous high power application at cruise - particularly if used in a ski boat. But, I doubt any non-competition use is as testing on an engine as an aviation application. The marine versions are under square ( longer stroke, smaller bore) than the car engine which should flatten the torque curve. It seems Viking are using the outboard crank rods and pistons. All good for constant throttle ops. cheers John
