    I hear similar questions to "Why do I need an instructor" with respect to Uni studies, Ham radio Licence and many more things. Nobody wants to do the hard work - but they want their reward anyway. Sign of the times I guess. Scares me, folks out there with qualifications they never earned. I see it so often, folks who fly but have no idea of the theory and knowledge they are meant to know, folks with degrees but cannot demonstrate any real knowledge. Dumbing down is deadly and is growing rapidly.

    Went for a blast just after sunrise on Friday 10th. Visibility was poor due to a inversion but the sight of a hot air balloon with the sun behind it was quite nice.

    It's simple - don't do beat ups. You already prove you're clever by having a pilot licence, these people (that do beat ups) just prove they're fools.

    Normally yes, but they showed a Cessna and reported a Piper. They are as daft as a dunny brush.

    There's a report on Australia's worst news website (news.com.au) that a plane landed on a highway in India and the wealthy pilot had no licence. The picture shows a Cessna and the report says a Piper Navajo. I might like to add that considering less than 30% of India's drivers have valid drivers licences it is no surprise the owner of the aircraft had no licence. Corruption rules in that country!

    I have started playing with application development on Android. I'll let you know (I'll let everyone know) if I come up with anything worthy. So far, all I have managed to do is write a simple app that calculates my BMI and tells me I'm a fat slob. I hate software that connects with 'other entities' so that you're not sure what's happening under the bonnet, my apps will not do that, promise. For those familiar with programming, Android apps are basically written using Java and XML. Easy enough after bashing your head against a wall getting the install to work correctly.

    The only time I ever use those strange names is when I look at the weather reports and then refer to the PCA chart. I am also an avid questioner - I always ask about things I do not understand well. The problem is when people reply with "You should Know That" or similar dumb statements. Although I am clever and smart beyond belief I am surrounded at work by Mathematicians and Physicists and thus by comparison appear dumb. We are all smarter than some and not as smart as others and the desire to learn is what separates us from the apes and bogans. By the way Bruce, how's the jet engine project coming along? A few of us a keen to at least see a test firing on the bench.

    I wish you all the best. It is pretty exciting flying your own plane across half the country, I have a mate here at Gawler who will being doing that in a few weeks.

    The great thing about the Jab is the endurance. 135 litres in the wings and (say) 16 litres per hour, you can fly a long way before worrying about fuel. And easy to fix if you do hit the wombat or kangaroo.

    Landing once my wing tip (Jabiru J170) came within inches of the ground just as I was rounding out. Call me a woos but I won't fly my plane in hot and/or gusty conditions anymore unless there is a very good reason.

    Stayed in Lake Elsinore, CA way back in 1990 for a week with a Ham Radio buddy (K6UMB) before heading off to Oshkosh for the air-show. While at Oshkosh I was amazed at the variety of planes we simply never get to see in Australia and number of folks that owned two or three (or more) planes! On the way back to the west coast I hired a plane in Rapid City and went for a blast around the Black Hills and down to Sturgis. That was great fun. Nowadays I fly my Jabiru around (not often enough), keeps me out of the pub and generally out of trouble. Welcome to the forum.

    Not sure on your age but it is pretty cool when one learns something new, something that is somewhat more challenging than (say) golf or bowls. Let's hope you're got 20 years more to keep at it. I started flying over thirty years ago, still learn new things.

    I remember reading about a guy that took off in his plane, opened the air vent and ended up with a cabin full of wasps or bees. How awful!

    I still watch your video (with the "above the clouds" sound track) from time to time. I enjoy that.

    Check that the suction cap is not defective, that is, doesn't have any grooves or dents in the area that is meant to seal with the windscreen. The slightest imperfection there will cause an air leak.

    MY GPS uses a suction cup attached to the windscreen. At (say) 5000 feet I usually remove it and then restick it to account for the decreased air pressure. Back on the ground I need a four wheel drive to remove it.
