  3. Don't get too excited fellas , this was taken on descent into Southport , and there is some lag in the fuel flow indication . The CHT' s normally run around 220F , with OAT around 22F , and flying S&L . Fuel flow at or near MTOW is 16.9 - 17 l/hr at 2950 RPM . Jetting and fuel flow are as recommended by Jabiru . A bit of parallax error there I think Deb but I'll have to speak to the photographer , anyway battery nearly 7 yrs old now since manufacture . Engine now has 340 hours and untouched apart from mandatory upgrades . Bob

  11. Over the last week, you would all be aware of the developments surrounding the draft CASA instrument in regarding Jabiru Engines. The SAAA, and its National Council & staff are very cognisant of this draft. We have some very real concerns, not only with this current issue but any precedence that it may set which could affect our rights as an association both now or in the future. We are not as yet in possession of all the facts relating to this current draft instrument, nor do we understand some of the dynamics of the instrument or why it relates directly to engines fitted to aircraft operated by our members. I can offer you assurance that we have been involved in talks with the relevant bodies to seek information in order to be well informed. We do not have any clear cut answers or assurances despite our work to date, and while we have not communicated to the membership the current status, we are certainly taking a very keen interest in this problem and will be reacting accordingly once we are fully informed. It is far better to communicate some outcomes, rather than a communication that has no substance to it. We feel however that although we have nothing to offer as yet, the work is well underway. This advice is to assure you that were are on the job. SAAA National Council have the interests and rights of our members first and foremost. When able, Geoff will release a member document clearly stating what we understand, what our concerns are, and how we are addressing them. I understand everyone's concern, especially the Jabiru owners. I assure you we are addressing the impact not only of this issue, but possible future instruments affecting our membership. We will ensure that the rights of the SAAA members are heard and understood and not eroded. We will be making a submission to CASA before the 27th November on behalf of our organisation. Our argument will be based on factual information which takes time to compile.

  14. Bruce , Sorry to hear about the issues with your 3300 , but could you give us a few more details eg. Mogas or Avgas operation , fuel/oil additives ,engine hours , normal operating temps ,engine monitoring , fine finned heads ,any mods , etc. etc. Bob
  15. I use a 3G mini ( RRP $499 non Retina display) , so a saving of about $90.00 . My wife prefers the old 3G Ipad 2 with kneeboard . Mostly outdated charts as backup . Bob .

  17. Caught up with Alf Jessup yesterday at YWSL following his 4 hour flight around South and East Gippsland with a friend . Here he is with his beautifully presented Tecnam Sierra . Many will be familiar with Alf's recent family issues and I'm sure we all wish daughter " MJ " a full recovery . Bob
  18. When an engine is returned to Jabiru for repairs a report is done detailing the cause . That report of the failure is available to the owner and yet I cannot recall one ever being published on these forums . The facts are , that continually running these engines overheated will lead to a failure . Unfortunately many " simple "repairs are done by people that may well be good general mechanics , but do not fully appreciate the operation or the thermal cycling/metal technology of an air cooled alloy aircraft engine , opposed to a liquid cooled car or aircraft engine . Sadly, even some that complete the maintenance course at Jabiru believe they know better , by either fitting non standard valve guides or failing to ream to the correct valve /guide clearance .As sure as night follows day ,either one , and operating over temp will result in valve failure . Even putting additives into the fuel , which is something I hear about every second day , can result in a buildup over time causing valves to jam open . In summary , I believe that many failures are not due to the basic engine design/construction ,but the result of either faulty operation ,workmanship /repair , due to the apparent simplicity of the engine .   19. Nice words Russ . I know where you're coming from . I also often look across to my partner of more than 50 years , as we fly those long lonely legs to the Gulf and beyond , she blissfully unaware of the thoughts going through my mind , listening to every revolution of the little J 2200 for those early warning signs of an impending fault . I guess we will all know when it's time to take up bowls , but in the mean time we are both fortunate to have partners that share our passion . As I have previously said on this forum , these days I avoid tiger country at all times where possible , preferring the safe and landable , opposed to the shortest or direct track option . At least if the noise stops there is a fair chance you will both walk away . Bob

Yes Russ ,I guess that thought of an engine out is always there no matter what engine is up front ,however there are a few simple precautions that people can do to minimise the risk of an engine failure ,and they are well documented . A cold pullover (I usually do around 10 or so compressions ) will generally give an indication if something is amiss - unusual sounds , low compression etc. and don't forget to ensure that the engine oil is at the recommended level . These are to minimum checks I perform on the engine before the first flight of the day and before the next leg of the journey . Bob

  24. In this electronic age with the diminishing tendency to receive snail mail there is a certain " ownership " about a paper copy . As a long time recipient of the CASA publication " Flight Safety " I found it difficult to understand why they ,of all people , decided to change to the current electronic format , particularly having regard to the fact that the only reason for their existence is safety , other than maybe some ambitious desk jockey trying to bring to the notice of his similarly ambitious superiors , how tech savvy they are , and their apparent concern regarding the spending of public money . Anyway I dutifully downloaded their new App. and checked out the first few editions , but for some unknown reason have not bothered to read the recent downloads . Maybe it's because they are not "just there " to pick up as I walk past , or maybe it's just that I am really too old to keep up this tech savvy charade . Whatever the reason , in my case they have failed the very reason for their existence , which is to promote safe skies for all . I suspect the electronic version of Sport Pilot will have a similar fate over time . Posters here have given many reasons in opposition to the electronic version .... " like to read the mag in bed etc. " and a variety of other reasons . On the other hand, I , like many others well understand the reasons for our relatively small , poorly funded by CASA organisation , to look for ways to trim their expenditure , but is this apparently loss making exercise really the best way ? . This is not a criticism of the current board members , who have my full support in these difficult times often in the face of adversity to ensure the continued viability of our Organisation . Their commitment ,particularly in regard to time expended , is commendable . Bob
