  3. Hm interesting, I hadn't checked the changes to 95.8.... never realised they were that dramatic Who certifies you to fly 3 axis under 95.8?
  4. If you are ever in an area (like Dalby) where hang gliders fly, expect them up to cloud base (with in permissible limits of course) and on blue days as high as thermal activity goes... 10,000 is the legal limit in Class G and above 10,000 to 12,000 with oxygen.
  5. 2... the Class 1 flex wing in the back ground and the Class 2 Swift front left. To my knowledge the Tempest(?) back right and Goat haven't demonstrated foot launch ability...??
  6. I was out Friday night for the evening then left about 11 Saturday as I have other pressing commitments at the moment... didn't even manage to get airborne at all
  7. Dalby Hang Gliding Club has been having its annual competition all week Sat-Sat... finished yesterday with about 60 competing with 10 or so more free flyers. They had valid tasks everyday though the weather was not the best at the start of the week. Finished with some closed courses of about 120km the last couple of days.

  9. When the chute snaps open, it is a dynamic load. The runner is there to help the chute open, not reduce load. Having said that you are no doubt correct and having four points of attachment is good, and looking at the tape used across 4 points it would be sufficient... It is sub-optimal. You will not get each strap taking the load at exactly the same time. Please excuse my incredulousness... but no one should EVER design a system where you have tape running over tape or rope running over rope or loose knots pulling tight when the scheisse hits the prop. I don't have a chute in my aircraft so temper my current 'expertise' accordingly You are far better of than I regardless of my observations
  10. The the first picture where the loop on the left is not tight already is a failure waiting to happen! A dynamic load on a rope or tape... through a bight like that is bad BAD voodoo the one one the right is not better..
  11. Yeh not my place to say for sure... but the L2/RTO with me when we did my install made sure we left the old Brolga on it for run in to get 6800 before we fitted the new Bolly which we then pitched for 6500 max
  12. Installation manual says Max RPM 'refer to OM'... meaning refer to Op Manual for your models max RPM, not what you can 'get'... "The break in procedure must be performed with .... properly loaded with matched propeller for max RPM." Rotax Installation Manual Section 21. Anyway don't know if this is relevant... just wondering...

To further compound the stalling problem is the beads of water move around on the Mylar (of course Dacron is no problem as it absorbs the water) ... a term often thrown around is 'divergence'... and in turns they will tend to feel like they want to wind in... though it depends on the wing model. Bill the stall characteristics will not necessarily be equal for each wing: we are talking about a random amount of water and beading which is quite unquantifiable in amount and effect. One might stall while the other does not. Worth noting also that it is not just airspeed that stalls the wing it is angle of attack and airspeed combined... I too have always wondered about the high AoA take off technique.

  15. The Dragonfly was actually designed by Bobby Bailey, hence the 'Bailey Moyes' DragonFly. Bobby is the pilot in a lot of the videos you see out of the states...certainly most where the plane is in some unusual attitudes, he lives at Quest Air in Florida. He built the plane 'around' himself so to speak. Rumour is he squatted in the corner with a cigarette, as he is won't to do, with a bottle of coke, some Twisties and a pile of aluminium tubing and built a plane. He is a really nice guy and lives to fly. He also built some quite amazing feather weight models before they started getting real small commercially. Controls were by way of small magnets to move control surfaces.... anyway... Bill Moyes helped design/refine and finance the Dragonfly and of course looks after commercial construction to a large extent, but you will often find Bobby being flown over here to construct them from scratch or where they are sent too for assembly. The 'dolly's' we fly off for hang gliding are triangular in shape (3 wheels). They are really an awesome aircraft, but require a slightly different skill set, more seat of the pants than a Drifter. You need to lead with a WHOLE LOT of rudder... just banging over the stick will not really have much effect, lots of foot work required though they are not very hard to fly... About 12 years ago we started the Dalby Hang Gliding Club, born out of a ground tow operation, a couple of pilots came to Sth East Qld who owned a Dragon fly and we eventually moved it Dalby... but back then we had to keep it in a trailer so needed to take the wings and engine off after all our towing was done for the weekend Then we arranged a lease of a hanger .... well a roof.... and through sweat and tears and lots of excellent support form members we eventually built the hanger in and now own the Dragonfly outright. Bill is great fun....you will find Bill quite a character Geoff, and he will no doubt give you all sorts of grief that you want a Dragonfly that wont be used to tow, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he refuses to sell you one or threatens the same They are not cheap...but not expensive hard to pin down a REAL price on a new one but expect to spend circa 50k. If Bill likes you a lot and you use it to tow it might be cheaper and 2nd hand you should be able to get one for under 30 for a perfect example I would guess.   16. This is an all brand new set up, I notice the EGT that reads low also takes a lot longer to come up to temp... might try a new probe. I also understand that (now) that the air mixture screw has more to do with idle settings?
  17. I have a question RE EGT... On a Drifter SB... my EGT's run at the right temps but the PTO always runs hotter by about 50f... this is above the req difference in the Rotax manual (40). Personally I do not trust the probes for accuracy BUT is it to be expected the PTO will run hotter because it is downstream of airflow? Should I try and match them by a slightly richer burn in on the MAG carbie (not PTO end)? (or vice versa)
