1. There was a glider at Boonah too, short final by the look it, however I think they may taken a new set of photos because all you see now is a couple of gliders parked down at the new hangars.
2. Bit of info here; http://www.recreationalflying.com/showthread.php/110536-Airfield-closures?highlight=drag+racing Strikes me that a two pronged approach to council; i) cost of repairs and ii) possible legal issues re complaince with ANDRA etc regs would be a good way to go.
3. This one unfortunately paints a less friendly picture. Models are notoriously unreliable more than 24-48hrs out, however the important point to note is that by the end of next week, whatever forms out there is going to steer roughly westward - the previous pattern with Zelia, Hamish in previous seasons, where they chuffed off down the coast and then went kiwi - is most likely over for now. Edit, site insists on downloading the animated gif as a simple jpeg so it won't play. Anyhow it shows the whirly heading off east before doing a smart about turn and coming back at us around Mackay. I wouldn't bet wages on that landing, but the general idea stands.
4. Apologies to anyone who may have suffered any unpleasantness at the hands of Tasha, however in general terms it seems as if our cyclone season has now gone up a gear or two in Qld waters. A gent by name of Anthony was christened this morning and whilst he is currently heading away from the coast, the overall steering pattern in the Coral sea is expected to do a u turn about Australia Day. Anthony may or may not be back for a visit but the met types are fairly confident that if not him, then his successors in title are almost certain to move west across the ocean and smack into the coast - somewhere! The monsoon trough is very active and they are already tracking another disturbance further out - Bianca perhaps (?) so now might not be a bad time for anyone between Cooktown and Byron Bay to dig out the spare batteries, water bottles, tarps and whatever else you reckon you may need. May they be little ones, pass by quickly and find an uninhabited spot to hit!
5. Good to hear, enjoy, I'm suffering serious withdrawal symptoms! Rgds Carl
6. Christian, if I'm not mistaken this aircraft is hangered at Jacobs Well - not sure that it is currently flying though. I will make enquiries and pass your details on to the owner if my memory served me correctly. Regards Carl
7. Ha ha, I'm pretty sure Airbus didn't release that video themselves. I'd like to hear from the airline drivers amongst us, however my understanding is that the 5 minute rule is a certification requirement so all big commercial aircraft would have to be able to demonstrate compliance. That said, I reckon the Boeing video had some key bits edited out, for example I'm fairly certain that the Airbus also has fuse plugs in the rims to allow the tyres to deflate instead of the carcase literally exploding - the Boeing video conveniently didn't show that bit. A good friend who flies a 747 for a living told me a fairly hair raising story about a rejected take off only a little below V1 where they ended up on a section of runway without an easy turnaround for their size aircraft. They ground to a halt in a cloud of smoke and were very relieved to see the firecrew arrive; apparently dumping pax down the slides near burning brakes and tyres, the latter going bang quite violently, is not considered a desireable outcome, although obviously preferable to roasting them if the whole show goes up.
8. According to news reports and the wrinkled plum, it was a Tiger Moth, no rego disclosed as yet. Pilot and passenger both survived.
9. Yeah David, being a biplane does cut down the possibilities. Several others around that neighbourhood though.
10. Update, Careflight paramedics confirmed 1 person escaped crashed aircraft unaided, second person trapped and is being treated in situ.
11. Not good:sad:, here's hoping for a positive outcome. A small plane has crashed in ranges near Toowoomba in southeast Queensland. A biplane crashed into bush near Table Top Mountain, near Toowoomba, about 5.20pm (AEST) on Sunday, a RACQ Careflight spokesman said. RACQ Careflight crews are at the scene checking on survivors. "We believe there were two people on board," the spokesman said. "We have winched down to assess the survivors." It was not immediately known if the plane was involved in any search and rescue activities connected to the Queensland floods. from ninemsn
12. :musicboohoo::musicboohoo:Pssst, wanna buy an United Airlines 757? Been hidden in the desert by the CIA since 9-11
13. :oh yeah:Davey, you need to remember where Donald, (windsor 68) works - take his comment in context. I don't think Qantas has forfeited its title of national carrier/flag carrier, or at least not yet. Off topic; have you heard from either Greg or Dave Briffa - not sure whether either of them were in the firing line of the floods and haven't had a response to my text yet?
14. There'll always be life's "victims" who stand around whining, waiting for the "welfare" or the "guvmint" to come do it all, but I have to admit to a swell of emotion seeing the footage last night of an army of people out tackling the cleanup more or less a few feet behind the retreating water. Keeping up that momentum is going to be the challenge, because there are some things that are going to take longer, but they sure have started well. Time to shut down and pack shovel and boots.
15. Thinking of you guys DD, thanks too for the update on the Scotts. We'll get there, one way or another:thumb_up:
16. Know what you mean Daryl, I guess it will become very real when we get armpit deep in the mud with the clean up. I've sent Greg a msg, will relay any response. I don't have a contact number for Dave Briffa - anyone, Davey Mason? Cheers Carl
17. Yeah Maj, fair enough though you guys have everyone fleeing any time there is a cyclone in the same hemisphere. Make the most of it. Photos of some of the aircraft posted on ninemsn and the Australian websites.
18. If I'm not mistaken member Escadrille lists Grantham as his strip and home as Toowoomba, hope all well there.
19. Ditto on that Sue, your posts are a breath of fresh air. I've had a bit to do with EMQ and must agree with your point re pre-planning, it is a little irritating to get the impression from the TV coverage that things like evacuation centres have only now been thought of; there is a vast organisation behind all that happens. It may not be perfect, but it is pretty damn good.
20. Sadly Burbles it seems this is only the start of things, the river is expected to rise another 2.5m by tomorrow am and to stay thereabouts until the weekend at least. It is possible that some areas further up the river will get even worse, the official measurement is at the Port Office in the CBD. What is particularly concerning is that the Wivenhoe dam is just short of ultimate capacity with authorities holding back every drop they can to minimise the flood peak. It has got to within 50cm of the secondary spillway and my understanding is that if it spills over that, the spillway is designed to partially collapse, allowing the lake to drain down to its normal full level without any way of stopping it. The flood system appears to have worked exactly as designed and even beyond expectation, but that capacity is now gone. As I understand it they are obliged to drain the dam down to 100% level within 7 days, to re-establish the flood mitigation capacity. That means the river is going to remain high. I have moved my office, home for the moment and am trying to keep things going, whilst helping various friends access information re flood maps, sand bags, insurance cover etc. I don't know about anyone else but there is an illogical sense of guilt sitting in my comfortable house, which is not under threat and watching this disaster unfold via TV and internet. This one is going to be felt for a long time yet. Just on a personal note, I find it incredible to see an organisation like the SES and EMQ swing into action, so quickly and effectively. I've only been in Aus for 6 years now and experienced a devastating flood as a uni student overseas, including losing my father. There was a completely ad hoc response from police and military personnel and I know many people simply fell through the cracks during and after the event. We are incredibly fortunate with what we have here!
21. Geez Frank, I always knew one of my chirps would come back to haunt me! I certainly didn't expect to see this, even if the figures predicted weren't far off ultimately. I'm interested in the weather and have been following this event closely, but in between an important meeting and travelling around, it took my wife to phone me in Brissie this morning and alert me to the deteriorating situation. I'm afraid I thought she had read something sensationalist - until I tuned into the ABC and heard the SEWS - even after hearing it at intervals today, it still makes my skin crawl. My thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy, sadly as things settle down we will no doubt find that we on the forum are going to know people who have been directly affected. Regards Carl
22. Not good! Seems there were 2 people in the aircraft - not RA though. Found this in the T'ville Bulletin; TWO men have been killed after a light plane, believed to be a crop duster, crashed near Ingham this morning. Emergency services were alerted to the crash this morning when the plane was reported missing. Police said the plane, believed to be a crop duster, came down at Hawkins Creek about 8.20am. The crash scene is just a few kilometers from the Ingham Aerodrome. Both men, believed to be in their thirties, died when the plan crashed into a cane field. Police said the Forensic Crash Unit would assist in investigations and a report would be prepared for the Coroner.
23. Geez that's grim Donald, war zone is probably an apt description and the worst is there is no quick fix, this is all going to drag on for a long time yet.
24. Saw this earlier; for those of you familiar with the Boonah area, they put the "plug" in the new Wyaralong Dam a week before Christmas, photo apparently taken 3 Jan! It'll probably be full by the time the current system blows over. Photos courtesy Buster on weatherzone
25. Further to the above, I've just been trawling through weatherzone - without being alarmist, the system that flooded Gympie and Maryborough is expected to slowly expand south tonight placing Brisbane to Northern Rivers in the firing line over the following 48 hours. The other feature of concern is that radar already shows rain streaming as far inland as the Darling Downs, where they really don't need anymore. Probably not a bad idea to keep an eye on the TV and/or BoM if you're in SEQ, to avoid unpleasant surprises.
