    That's great news. So are they much as you expected in terms of what needs to be done? Enjoy! Apologies about the promised mag article, I have had email server issues, but it seems to have come good this morning.     Flying a gyro is still somewhere ahead on the bucket list and I don't pretend to know a great deal about them. They sure do seem to have moved on from the Bensen, beach chair on a stick model though:cool:, I found these photos on an SA site, apparently they had 43 at a recent fly in.

    Couldn't get it to work, but found this. Must say I didn't realise that they put the 701 on floats, although being Canadian it makes sense I guess. I suppose my only reservation would be the possibility of corrosion if you used it on salt water - composite would certainly be easier:big_grin:

    I tend to lean the other way, unless you are intent on shooting professionally, the upper range cameras are likely to be more machinery than you'll ever need. If you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, spending it on better lenses is likley to give you a far better return for your dollar. The way I see it, if you're really serious about photography, by the time you get to the standard where you can honestly say that a consumer level camera is holding you back - well by then your you beaut 60D or 7D even will have been replaced by something even better, trade up then.

    If any of you KR enthusiasts are interested, I have a scanned test report on the KR2 from a 2009 Pilot (UK) magazine. Probably not kosher to publish here, however I'll gladly email it out.

    Arrgh where's my green smiley, Rach! That sounds like a brilliant trip - very jealous. Fraser Island, I believe Orchid Beach in the NW is the only realistic option, there was a thread here recently with a contact number (Orchard beach I think it was referred to), the other strips are controlled by the rangers and I believe you're likely to exceed MTOW dealing with the relevant paperwork! In that vicinity consider Teewah, Noosa and Rainbow Bay to the south, beautiful areas to fly over - unfortunately I don't have contact details handy, however there have been threads recently referring to these - I think BecM has some connection with Noosa from memory and Rod? from Rainbow Beach made a generous offer a while back (Tomo you corresponded with him). On the way up there, consider detouring over Moreton Bay to get around Brisbane airspace, spectacular flight and you could land at Cowan-Cowan (Tangalooma strip definitely PPR, call resort for details). If you get caugth out there is a bunk house at Heck Field, Jacobs Well, also caravans at Dunwich on North Straddie I'm told). I'll think of more and i'm sure others will have lots more ideas.     Ha ha, no apology called for, as you say I think we all feel much the same way about this incident, I was merely picking up on the reference to "fun" I still have slight cold shivers thinking about the first time I took my son up, we had a raptor of some description pass across our bows at fairly close range, not exactly a near miss but enough to get my undivided attention. In the back of my mind was the thought that even if we weren't badly injured by the bird coming through the screen, the Tecnam might not fly too well with the resultant turbulence over the tail. I recall reading an accident report about a C172 going in, overseas due to a loss of control following a similar incident.

    Congrats Darky, mine was a while ago now but I can still remember feeling enormous relief that I'd knocked over a pretty big milestone in the whole career / life path thing. (Well and just a smidgen of pride too) Well done!

    Funny sense of fun you have Nev, I suspect everyone who has viewed those photos is acutely aware that the outcome could easily have been very different, not least of all Darky. Chalk one up to the guardian angel methinks!

    James May's bad air day - BBC Top Gear The link above takes you to a column by James May, about his experience of what was intended to be a day's flying. Sounds awfully familiar to one who may not own an aircraft (yet!) but has an unhealthy attraction to elderly machinery. Must say the long haired git has become a bit more acceptable since I learnt he is a mad keen aviation enthusiast. (Damn google, I started off taking a quick look at the classified's, saw the Luscombe for sale and got horribly sidetracked researching how it would fit in as an RA aircraft - well by the look of it.)

    Welcome aboard and enjoy the company. Try a search on the forum for some info on the Hornet, there was a bit of discussion about them recently; I don't know much first hand, but have also admired them, both flying and at flyins. Cheers Carl

    Probably not as much as I should, I have been flying with various passengers recently, most of whom don't really appreciate being thrown around. That said my son is gaining confidence and has quite enjoyed the couple of steep turns and stall I have shown him. Must admit the first one was a little more ragged than I would have liked but it soon came good. 2 weeks ago though I made arrangements to go up alone during the week and ran through most of the essentials including PFL. I would also like to do some circuit emergencies including efato soon. Although I generally strive to fly smoothly and avoid the outer edges of the envelope so to speak, as with driving and other physical skills, I don't think that you are as safe as you could be unless you do have an appreciation of and a degree of currency with those limits.

    Absolutely, otherwise it is going to be awfully disappointing come reality and you can't just power up and fly away from 50'. Landing is the logical conclusion of the exercise and although important, everything else merely serves to get you to a place where you can land safely. It goes along with the "fly the aircraft as far as possible into the crash" thinking - you should never just be along for the ride. This was one of the aspects I particularly enjoyed about my RA conversion, I was expected to be able to roll the wheels on a little farm track that I had lined up on, before applying power - definitely added a dose of realism and made me concentrate on landing accurately:keen:. Similarly deadstick landings were a definite bonus, although understandably these were carried out onto the airfield. In the Tecnam Golf there was a small but noticeable difference in elevator feel and effectiveness compared to a gliding with the engine at idle.
