  1. Flying, wots that? Even the ducks are tired of the weather up here - and having to file IFR flight plans. I've been trying to get out to the field for the past three weekends and this one coming isn't looking much more promising. Beaut photos though, you guys sure are making the most of the Savvy, except that we haven't seen too many dirt strips and paddocks featured yet?
  2. That is an interesting wrinkle Tomo, I suppose to be pedantic the cost of your flying someone else's aircraft (ie not hiring) is the fuel etc it takes to get wherever you're going; but as Darky says there are ways around it and it is difficult to see how you could come up short when all you're doing is volunteering your time as a favour. If I were in that position I promise you I'd find a way to make it work! Remember too that it's apparently ok charge the cost of flying yourself somewhere for work, to a client, in the same way you would driving there in a car. The way to do it seems to be a fixed charge per km, eg if you flew somewhere to fix a machine for someone instead of driving the ute there. Hoping to make use of this myself before long. The difference though is that you are using it as transportation for yourself. As I understand it jump pilots operate under a specific dispensation, Ozzie n co can tell us more about it. Edit: I see while I was chewing on my lunch the conversation moved on.
  3. That would be the original birdstrike from behind? Congrats Cooda, good to hear of a youngster working toward and achieving his dreams.
  4. By that logic you could operate quite a few of the world's airlines, they don't make a profit either. Not true - you need to pay your share too, so the most you can ask of anyone is cost of flight, divided by the number of occupants. The logic is cost sharing rather than profit related.
  5. Lots of lovely bush flying, possibly not entirely in accordance with the ops manual:laugh:, but fun for a rainy afternoon.
  6. Let's hope the weather is a little kinder by then.

  8. That would be bloody funny, if only it weren't all too true!:black_eye:
  9. I'm open to correction but my understanding of our regs is that if he holds a drivers licence without any restrictions, he is entitled to fly recreationally. It may be worth asking about PPL medical too, I believe there has been some relaxation for colour blindness. Let's face it, isn't it only night flying where colour perception comes into play anyway?
  10. Matt, thanks for taking the trouble to get John's version. Murphy undoubtedly had a hand in ensuring that the engine failed at a point where he couldn't glide free, but he had his share of luck too - I go cold at the thought of dropping 80 plus feet to the ground after crashing into the canopy. I thought his piece was well written, great pity to have lost the efis data, but still there is a fair amount of info there anyway. Sad to see the aircraft totalled like that, but a great escape none the less.
  11. Funny feeling indeed, except it didn't originate in my feet!
  12. Hi mate, I see you're in the neighbourhood, so to speak. Welcome aboard and I look forward to hearing more of your flying adventures. Cheers Carl
  13. Thanks Tomo, real shame about the weather - looks like a beautiful place.
  14. Argh, Huey is playing games again, quite wet down on the 'Coast today, but looks okish up at Woodford, according to BoM. Tomorrow not too promising though.
  15. Frank email me the photo on sparky at ausfish dot com dot au, I'll reduce it and mail back to you if you like. Be interesting to see historical photos like this.
  16. Loved the story and the photographs Ultralights, first class once again. I linked one of your previous threads on the delivery trip, to an overseas site that I frequent, as a way of showing what flying can be like here. It received a lot of favourable comment.
  17. Lucky man to get away with it amongst those trees. That RV8 is going to need more than a bit of buffing unfortunately, back to the workshop fella:crying: - I wonder how long he had been flying her, I see the rego was first issued in 2006 but that could have been well before completion. Anyone know what engine, Lycoming or one of the Subaru's that some people are putting into the RVs now?
  18. Thanks for posting that, pretty fascinating stuff. Now I wonder what it would have cost NASA to achieve a similar result? Seems I going to have to get me one of these little cameras, I've really enjoyed Ultralight's various videos made using one - just wish I'd had one years ago when I was more bulletproof and did lots of white water kayaking, paragliding, offroad racing etc.

    Help

I think you've got it Doug; at the moment the only way is to upload onto a third party site like youtube and post the link here. I think Ian was talking about adding software to allow a direct upload, but that will obviously have major implications for hosting requirements and bandwidth usage - video is greedy in comparison to text or photos.
  20. Not around here you can't. Would be delighted to be proven wrong and would move regaining my PPL to the top of the list. David / Tomo, you guys are flying Cessnas at the moment, what are you paying at Archerfield and Caboolture respectively?
  21. I reckon I'm a fairly regular browser here, but it suddenly dawned on me that "our man in Canberra" has been awfully quiet of late. Never met Ross(?) but used to enjoy his accounts of the latest spotty animal adventures, not to mention all the work he put in here. Anyone know anything or is it just that as a non chat room dweller, I missed the news? PS. Hope the ranga didn't get him, there's a bit of it going around down there I hear!:ah_oh:
  22. Yup sounds like you caught a good'un there Mark, congrats and all the best for Saturday. Neil, I'll keep a look out for you - by the way I like the sound of your new mistress, I've got a little time off coming my way and am hoping to spend part of it getting to know the red lady out at Boonah. Cheers Carl
  23. Geez Mark you're a brave man making predictions like that for the day after you needed a best man! Yeah, Sunday looks like the day for it. What aircraft are you coming across in Neil, trike? Cheers Carl

    Drifter engine outs

Scary prospect indeed and exactly the scenario you could face after a fire with an electrical origin. Seems I should count myself fortunate to have been taught to slip at all. Thanks for the input Nev and Frank.
  25. No argument from me Nev, unfortunately people have come to accept a high level of prosperity as the norm and the entire economy is geared to continual growth without any leeway for a slowdown. Vide our recent $1000 handout, God forbid people stop playing pokies or buying new TVs! I only became aware the other day that the govt had quietly changed the residence requirements for purchasing residential property - greatly increasing the potential market. Fine and well, my house value didn't plummet during the crisis but what about down the road when we are all bleating about unaffordable housing?
