Best 'out of the box' combo for skyecho2?
danny_galaga replied to danny_galaga's topic in Instruments, Radios and Electronics
Now I'm more confused than ever 😄 I THINK cooling will be ok as I will be using a RAM mount, so plenty of air circulating around. When you say 30 seconds of fiddling. Is that a once off, or every time you want to pair it? If every time, then that's a problem because sure as eggs imma forget to do that until I'm in the air, where I don't want to be fiddling. -
Best 'out of the box' combo for skyecho2?
danny_galaga replied to danny_galaga's topic in Instruments, Radios and Electronics
Yes, that's exactly what I want to hear! If say ten people here have the combo of iPad/avplan working seamlessly, and two have some other combo that isn't quite as straightforward, then I'm going with the crowd 😃 All my life I've, for one reason or another gone with the option less used, and often felt frustrated by that choice. This time, I'm going to be with the in crowd 😄 -
I am going to buy one soon. I don't have a tablet yet, and reading though a couple of threads here I see several people had trouble with android. This is a bummer because I was going to get a galaxy. So please list your combo of efb software and tablet brand and whether that combo worked straight outta the box with your skyecho2. I'll hold off getting a tablet. Im too lazy to fiddle with settings 😄

You kinda just put disparate facts together, gets a bit confusing..normally a few sentences in a row would have some relevance to each other. When the relevance runs out, you start a new paragraph... -
They're not just great. They're not just amazing. They're amazingly amazing!

Which Gee Bee? Most were racing planes, I don't think those had a light wing loading 😄 -

Corvair engines must be getting a bit thin on the ground. And probably not much in the way of aftermarket aircraft parts like the VW. for that plane, seems to me you would be better off running the Jabiru 3300, which I notice has been done before. -

Some info on what's available in the dub world right now https://www.kitplanes.com/air-cooled-volkswagen-engine-buyers-guide-2023/ -
Since I moved back into my apartment, when I want to have an afternoon nap, I have to wear earplugs and earmuffs to drown out the racket of the crazy old bat next door who cranks up her telly- she only watches news, games shows and freakin ' horse racing. A more soulless cacophony than the sound of horse race calling, I cannot imagine. What are they even saying? No one knows 😅 Anyway, I can relate to the 'double bunger' method 🙂

Thanks for the info Rogerc 🙂 I've owned a couple of air cooled VW cars so always wondered about them in Drouin Turbulents etc. And yes, I remember they always seem to develop cracks between the valves. And that's just under normal car use, not 80-90 % power all day 😲 Seems I'm best sticking to 'on condition ' Rotax for any future projects. My days of constant tinkering with engines is behind me I think 😄 Old man and one track, I must point out that 1) the corvair engine 6 is by definition a flat 6, not a flat 4 😄 2) vw crankcases were magnesium from the start. The racing guys upgrade them to aluminium because it's sturdier, if a bit heavier. -
Just curious about vw based motors. 4 cylinder. I hear the propeller is driven from the generator/fan side, not the crankshaft side. Or are some from the clutch end? In any case, what's your experience? Hundreds of happy hours? Had it once, but never again?

I've been wondering about that. I might ask some questions in the engines thread. Pretty sure the Jodel that pops into the airfield from time to time has a VW

That's a seriously nice looking plane. Better looking than the Sonex, which I like. Both on VW power.

The bushcat has a neat design. One oil cooler on the top is in/out and the main exit of the rest of the cooling air is out the sides

I'll have to check the specs of the manky old carpets that cover the dirt in the hangar I'm in 😄

Carb Ice and 912 Rotax's
danny_galaga replied to redozbris's topic in Student Pilot & Further Learning
Oh, KISS applies here. See attached. the thin black hoses are the extra needed for the carb heat. Which have to splice into the main hoses. Plus I have to press fit the heating manifolds to the carbies. I am actually almost certainly going to put them on now, because despite the extra weight and complexity, they dont at least seem to rob any power. Just waiting on the kit manufacturer nowto elaborate on the loctites used. One of them in the manual is not even on loctites website. Could be a typo, but its repeated maybe 4 times. I dont wanna guess with this sort of stuff... -
Carb Ice and 912 Rotax's
danny_galaga replied to redozbris's topic in Student Pilot & Further Learning
I misspoke I realised afterwards. The Rotax carb heat I have actually only warms the inlet (water jacket). It's on all the time so I was imagining you would lose power. But since it is only really warming the inlet, and not the air there is virtually no power difference. I guess I'm trying to avoid all the extra plumbing and weight. -

Sorry for the Necro. Has anything changed with the 912 since the last post here? My kit (tractor) comes with carb heaters, but if it really doesn't need it then id rather reduce the complexity a bit, and the weight, and gain an xtra horse or two -
US air show crash 13/11/2022

I think very roughly speaking, during a steep turn, the bomber would have been roughly at the top of the joystick from the p63 pilots point of view. -
