  1. Do you have the bleed tube attached to the front top of the head on the 582 (going back into the radiator). There may be a large air bubble sitting there if the tube is not in place causing the overheating issue. Do the egt's vary in flight or is that a static reading.?
  2. Its on my bucket list for the Xair.
  3. One of the reasons for the increase in height to 10k was the ability to go higher over bad terrain so you could glide clear to somewhere to put down. I have done some long miles in the yellow beast and have flown over some pretty inhospitable country but I have always made certain that there is at least a patch of green available to land on within gliding distance. I am always aware that the fan could fail and, as I was taught, that I may have to put it down somewhere. I think part of the problem with getthereitis is the fact we have faster aircraft arriving on the scene and people are using them as you would a car and not a sports, fun item. Running out of fuel is just plain dumb.
  4. I believe (and I stand to be corrected) that they don't have to state the ethanol content if it is less than 5%. I run either 98 premium caltex and avgas. I get my fuel from the same gas station each time and test it at least once a fortnight for ethanol using the same method you described. So far, I have not had a bad batch (in 4 years). (instead of using the small fuel tester I sometimes use a larger jar so I can get a better result if there is one there to look at.)
  5. Silly question but you havent got a Farenheit gauge instead of a centigrade one ? (sorry pud but just asking.?) I have not reached 6800 rpm on a rotax 582 yet. I have never managed to get more than 6300 on a good day but the motors run real well. The pitch blocks on a 3.1 c box tend to be best at 16 degrees for a 3 blade 68 inch brolga. (not sure what yours should run at but 12 degreesa sounds a bit sus. What cruise speed are you getting in the thruster?
  6. Hey Boingk, another one of the Goulburn fraternity. If you see the yellow beast around, come over and say hi. Cheers
  7. Hey FT, I am very happy with the Raa Aus pilots. You mean to say that GA pilots make no mistakes and dont crash planes? Wow, maybe I have been doing it all wrong so far.
  8. I would have thought that any death average was a worrying level. Maybe we should coin the phrase "tizzardisms". These were people, not statistics for goodness sake.!!!!!
  9. David, dont beat yourself up over this. The pilots out there were aware of the proposal and it was up to them to show an interest as well. The number of 95-10 amd 95-25 were very low, even the 95-55 rag and tube were scarce. Personal circumstances change and we must accept that. Well done for volunteering initially. As you say, maybe another day. Cheers Maynard
  10. The back to basics theme was a joke. You could count the rag and tube contingent with both hands and one shoe off. Maybe a little more promotion by the parent organisation could have been done. I have attended all 3 at Temora, the local Temora input has been consistently fantastic and I dips me lid to them. I think the problem is that the sport is becoming more expensive with every one wanting to fly mini GA and not Ultralight fun machines. Every stall except Ians seems to cater for the large money end of town and not the basic Mums and Dads working peoples economy flying requirements that Ultralighting was started to fulfil. The full glass cockpit is fine if you can afford the arm and the leg but what about someone selling non TSO'ed instruments, plastic fittings, cloth covering supplies, tapes etc. I agree, a certain amount of wish list stuff is great (and some of the aircraft porn is wonderful to look at), but lets be practical here. You do not need the latest Technam, Jabiru, space rocket, (not that there is anything wrong with these) etc to enjoy this sport and maybe a consistent push to actually recognise and support actively both ends of the sport should be made. We are not a mini GA organisation, we are a Recreational flying organisation with operating maximums. I did enjoy the flyin but left on the Saturday afternoon as I had seen all there was to see 3 times. I agree Windsor68, we are in trouble when a recreational flying organisation can give awards to GA aircraft at the expense of their own registered aircraft (makes a bit of a joke out of it and is the reason I do not attend the Saturday night back slap at the RSL club, after attending the first one. I will be back next year.
  11. What an interesting aircraft that ercoupe is. Great concept and history.
  12. OK, thanks, maybe he just hasnt read them. Cheers
  13. Has anyone heard from Daviod Isaacs, I have left email messages for him both here and on his private one with no results re the rag and tube at temora?
  14. Goulburn has a second grass runway that was available for landing. The aircraft in question belonged to one of the flying schools on the field. The pilot got into a wheelbarrow situation and the front gear collapsed, putting the aircraft on its roof. Neither the pilot or the other person in the plane were injured but attended the local hospital for a check up as required. The aircraft was not moved for a while as the police and the ATSB had to be informed and permission obtained to remove it. It is now residing in the flying schools hanger and is a sorry sight. Interestingly, the cockpit structure is fully intact as it is meant to be. Strong aircraft.
  15. I dunno about slow aircraft limiting your potential, I have an expanded fuel tank in my Xair and I have done some long flights in it (7 - 8 hrs flying time - obviously with stops for fuel, comfort etc.) I fly regularly for 2 - 3 hrs at a time comfortably. The Xair can carry a lot of luggage - camping gear - etc. I admit, drifters look cool and are a great aircraft. The only difference between the faster aircraft, and the Xair/drifter /thruster types is the time taken to get where you are going. I fly for fun so the time is not that important. I am prejudiced re the Xair but they are both great aircraft for what they are.
  16. Why change, remember, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
  17. The wing attachment set up would have to be substantially altered, and the elevator on the xair std is extremely wide. The wings are designed to be removed, not folded.
  18. I know this may not be relevant, but have you checked the squelch setting?
  19. How about a trip at 55 knots to pubs at Goulburn, Temora, Ivanhoe, Whitecliffs, Tibooburra, Camerons corner, Innaminka, Birdsville and then onwards through queensland back to moree and down again to Goulburn. Great pub crawl.
  20. Wouldn't it be great if the pubs were 2 -3 hrs apart at 55 knots!!!!!
  21. Right hand circuits at parts of the Oaks, Jaspers and some others to keep aircraft away from the serial complainers and town folk.
  22. what guernsey says!!!!!!!
  23. xair, differential cable toe brakes and steerable nose wheel. A little more direct than the gazelle but very similar. Flew a lightwing with heel brakes, I guess its an acquired taste but found I kept putting the brakes on when I went to steer it.
