  1. remember you really start to learn after you think you know it all. Enjoy and congratulations. :)
  2. On a recent flight to Holbrook for the return to Holbrook weekend, I measured the amount of fuel and the amount of oil used during the flight. I have an oil injection unit on the blue head 582 mainly for convenience when doing very long flights and having to rely on avgas pumps. The oil to fuel used ratio worked out at exactly the same amount as if I had used premix. That was measured over 60lts fuel used and 1.2 lts activ 2T oil. I was impressed and dont seem to have a problem with injection. I'm keeping mine on.

Damn it all Tex, you can't leave us with that awesome video and not give us a trip report, where are the strips, distances, fuel, any aircraft problems, accomodation etc. Makes me want to plan a trip to birdsville and beyond for the Xair next year! What camera etc etc!!!!!! PLEASE!!!
  4. Just Quietly, won't hurt the flying schools either with extra students upgrading their qualifications!
  5. So if I have ppl exams, raa-aus x country etc and an Raa cert then it is basically statement from the doctor, time on type and cta experience for the RPL?? Sounds absolutely brilliant for expanding my horizons. (Rag and tube come first of course!!)
  6. Thredbo is the same, no sense of humour when theres no snow there.!!
  7. Good report, great looking country. What is the isobar? The snowys are brilliant aren't they.
  8. Hey trikepilot, remember Rawene well. Did quite a bit of work at the Rawene hospital when I worked for a kaikohe firm as an electrician. Small world huh!
  9. Hi Micko, I am now living in Goulburn in NSW. The aircraft is an Xair standard. 2 stroke 582 rotax powered. Pity the airfeild at Kaikohe is now private as it was built by the yanks in ww2 as an emergency feild, has 1 main and 2 cross grass all weather runways. It used to be a public airport and was regularly serviced by NAC (now Air NZ) with DC3's and then Focker friendships untill it closed. One of the controllers of the airfield was "bunny" Findlay (around the early 1960's). It was widely used as a training strip, and a lot of the locals used to fly model aircraft there. I believe a gliding club now has it.
  10. Hey Micko, Where in the Hokianga?, I am from Kaikohe. Good to see some northerners signing up. Wouldn't the scenery be better at KeriKeri during training?
  11. Can anyone tell me where to get electronic maps now that maptrax have ceased doing them?
  12. surely the clue would have been the driveways onto the "runway" up either side and the houses ("hangers") ??? (you think?)
  13. Maybe not, a lot of the new members are also facing exorbitant rises in costs for maintaining their GA aircraft, and I dont see this changing as they will still have to pay someone to maintain their 600kg plus aircraft. The best thing looks like I will be able to get trained in larger aircraft for the flying schools etc. So I can see the RPL going both ways and that can only bew good for the sport as a whole in this country.
  14. What concerns me is that the RPL is a common sense answer to a number of problems with the present system and as such, may be a problem for officialdom to recognise. Remember the government, they aren't happy till your not happy!!!!!
  15. Dazza, that has been my understanding for many years now. My instructors have told me that, I remember reading that in a number of publications and some airforce friends of mine reinforced that when asked. The reason the house light switches are the opposite is that in an emergency a smart downward stroke would turn them on. The orientation of the switches seem to be in the best positioon for emergency use, ie aircraft to turn off, lights in your house to turn on.
  16. Neil, you missed the most important one, where's the mighty Gazelle??? Other than that, great to meet you and yes it was enjoyable. Great infestation of Jab's (). Recommended for next year. Maynard
  17. I am designing a trailer for my Xair in case I have to relocate its storage and have a few questions for those members with an aircraft trailer. 1) Is it better to have the fuse facing forward or to the rear and why? 2) Wing storage - Mounted on the sides of the trailer or flat under the fuse? 3) Size of frame steel for open frame trailer (max wt of trailer and aircraft less that 750kg) 4) any photos/ideas for tool and fuel storage on trailer. 5) Any ideas for stone deflectors on front of trailer so the aircraft/wings do not get damaged by flying debris kicked up from the road.? The trailer will also serve as a trailer for a motorcycle trike (less that 400kg) when not in use as an aircraft trailer. Thanks Maynard
  18. Good to see you made it. I can attest that the air was a tad lumpy and I am wondering if this may have exacerbated the problem. Interesting that you felt no difference in the handling after loosing the fabric. I am glad that you got home ok.
  19. Started in Gliders 1in 1968 at the upper valley gliding club north of Wellington in NZ. In those days it was in Whitemans valley behind Trentham but has been moved to Upper Hutt. Did my training in a Rhonlerch (wood and fabric), and a Rhonadler. (this was about the same time that the Blanik was a brand new glider on the market. Flew in 1968 and 1969 (20hrs) then graduated from the institution I was attending at Trentham and never got back into them. Always regretted that. (always wanted to fly a Slingsby dart but never got the chance (the club single was a K8).) Cheers
  20. All packed up and ready to roll. I will be there sometime in the morning.
  21. I am looking to fly to the Holbrook flyin this weekend and am wondering about camping under the wing of the aircraft. I have tried to contact someone on the phone number listed on the HULC website but no joy. Will there be someone going into Holbrook for fuel etc,?
