  1. IF there is a hint of anything "structural" with this accident then there should be something put ASAP to ALL owners / operators of this type.
  2. Sorry Alan. Reread my post. What I mean were statements made by the Media about the pilot that have me thinking differently. Not the weather. We know that was fine and clear.
  3. Alan, I think we have to establish IF there was in fact an engine or structural problem. We know the day was fine and clear however the news media made some statements about the pilot that have me possibly thinking differently. We await the results of an official enquiry.
  4. Vev, that is exactly how we found the "soft" cylinder in our J160 at 160 hours.
  5. I think I said in an earlier post that the RAAus / ATSB could be empowered by the use of a CASA instrument. I agree that IF RAAus were to do the reporting then they would need the training in accident investigation.
  6. J160. Solid lifter engine had new (Jabiru overhauled) heads at about 160 hours. Aircraft then sold so have no further info.
  7. Thanks Mriya. It was mode S that I was thinking of as I new each aircraft rego is given a discreet Nr. I guess with Mode C then the fact the that the altitude being reported by the Gazelle transponder would of been able to be tracked due the sudden loss of altitude being reported to ATC. This would take some time to sort by ATC I guess but would identify the aircrafts rough posn.
  8. Gibbo..I second all you say incl a motion at Saturdays meeting. Even the extra $'s per year if that is what it takes to have ALL serious / fatal accidents fully reported. A brief within 30 days and full report at end of process.
  9. If this is the case then we need to have some means that Police are directed to inform RAAus, of their findings. This could be via a CASA instrument.
  10. Maj, Board members could have areas of responsibility. One of these could be accident / incident coordinator who would compile a monthly report and have it published on the RAAus web site. Just a thought.
  11. Maj, I am with you on this one. There must be some way that the accident findings can be published in a timely manner. I started a thread on this a year or two back and was told by all and sundry that the Police give a report to the coroner and then we hear nothing else. RAAus should be able to get this info and publish even IF only be email to Members. ASRA do this for every incident as I understand it. I also believe that ATSB should be involved in ALL fatal accidents.
  12. Motz, aircraft was 24 Rego. As far as I know, ATC can still identify an individual aircraft even IF transponder is set to std VFR 1200 by a certain piece of code that is included. I am happy to be corrected if this is incorrect.
  13. Condolences to the family. I hope a structural failure (if any) and / or engine failure can be ruled out early. Would be nice to see ATSB look at this one then we WOULD see a prelim report within 30 days. IF not then we will probably never know.
  14. David, we dont know yet if the aircraft is in bush. When the aircraft is found and the reason for it being there is known then you may be able to make this statement.
  15. Was just thinking that myself Cosmick. With all the activity I would of thought the News outifits would of been onto it.
  16. From my many hours of flying Orions on Search and Rescue missions I cannot understand why the Dornier is sitting at 25,000ft looking for a beacon. IF there was a beacon it would of been heard by either the satellite or aircraft overflying the area. An area of proability has to be determined based on fuel on departure and details of flight with the operator. A visual search by low flying aircraft and public reports will find the location. I assume the pilot had a PLB and IF this has not been activated then things are not looking too good. EDIT: Just read Ross's message above and understand why the Dornier is at flight levels.
  17. Ouch. This also happened to a Nanchang at Hervey Bay back in 2006/07. The pilot pulled the undercarriage lever on roll out instead of the flap retraction lever!
  18. Slightly off my original thread but I am trying to find how a Ralley Club MS880B (Listed for sale) is able to be registered as a RAAus aircraft. These aircraft have an empty weight of around 490kgs and MTOW of around 780Kgs. This would mean that as a minimum would be single seat and very (litttle) fuel.
  19. Nev, I would say that when the RAAus rules were written then all aircraft had the under wing rego in huge letters. This is no longer. My RV9A has the rego in small letters on either side as does nearly every other experimental in the country. I also note as old Cessna's etc are repainted the under wing rego is missing. The removal of this requirement would save alot of cost and trouble at initial registration.
  20. As it is no longer a requirement to display under wing markings on aircraft below 5700kgs operating wholly with in Australia, why can't the RAAus Technical Manual be revised along the same lines. I assume this was a requirement so as to follow what was then a CASA regulation. I post this for discussion only.
  21. Are the listings that are currently displayed on the RAAus web site "Members Market" now posted as they come into the office? I see one as recent as yesterday (01 Feb 13). This is great if this is the case. I guess what goes to print in Sport Pilot is what is listed at the print cut off day.
  22. Some video of the the Mozzy at Wings over Wairarapa (Masterton) recently. This was the last public outing of this aircraft as she is now being pulled apart for shipment to the US.
  23. Seems the aircraft was a Bantam B22S and yes probably weather and (possibly) darkness related. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) will be investigating so we WILL get a FULL report.
  24. dodo...that was the case last Jan. a Jan 12 mag was issued due missing a mid year 2011 mag when the publisher was changed. cheers
