The "Main Stream Media" (read Corporatised media) and in fact a number of posters here, seem to have completely ignored his whole message and reason for doing this. So I'll post it here and anywhere else I can.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM.

We HAVE to get the money out of politics. In the US since the Citizens United Supreme Court case, the elections have been swamped with corporate cash and the political obligations that result from that. The US is not a Democracy any more, it is and has been for some time a government by the rich for the rich. Just two people in the US, the Koch brothers, have announced that they plan to spend over $600 million for the 2016 election. How much return on investment do you think they will expect for that? And they are only two of dozens, if not hundreds of people and corporations that plan to try to influence the elections.

It is starting to happen here in Oz. In QLD we saw the Newman government relax the donation disclosure laws, not just by a little, but from $1,000 to $12,500 in one single jump. I'm certain that if that government had got re-elected, we would have seen another jump this term of a similar or greater magnitude. That's how we got political decisions like the ones that are being investigated now with regards to special treatment for international mining companies. And those are only the ones we've heard of so far.

With the current far Right wing government in Canberra, there will be similar moves and we have already seen the Abbott government attempt to bring in a hugely unfair and unpopular first budget that targetted students, the unemployed, the sick and elderly, while giving the multinationals a free pass on corporate tax avoidance. This is because they are obligated to a major media owner and multinational corporations for their term in government.

We NEED campaign finance reform. We need to get the money out of politics. We need publicly funded elections with strict spending limits and NO exceptions or wriggle room. If we don't free the political system from obligations to big donors (be they corporates or unions) we will never get policies in the nations interest. We will be doomed to flip-flop between extremist policies from both of the major parties.

WE NEED CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM BEFORE WE GO DOWN THE US PATH.
