pab
Spaceship 2 was designed and built from scratch in under two years by legendary Australian Aircraft Designer Steve Cohen. The aircraft is built entirely out of composite materials. It is powered by a Rotax 912, 100HP engine and it cruises at 85Kts @ 75% power. It is registered with Recreational Aviation Australia as an amateur built aircraft. 6
Thruster88
Good to see, Steve would be Australia's greatest designer in terms of most aircraft produced. https://www.swellnet.com/news/swellnet-dispatch/2017/11/06/long-read-soaring-and-exploring-steve-cohen Edited May 19, 2020 by Thruster88
Old Koreelah
Thanks for posting, Pab! Been trying to follow this project but Steve's been too busy to answer the phone. As well as being a prolific designer and builder, the boy has amazing foresight: look at the social distancing he's built into the cockpit!
Flightrite
That sure is one ugly plane!??
Old Koreelah
That sure is one ugly plane!?? I disagree, FR. It's a very sleek camper, with additional boating and flying capabilities.
onetrack
I can see plenty of prang potential in an aircraft with drooping wings. Just a bit a gust under one wing when close to the deck, and you could be facing the wrong way very rapidly. I'm amazed that Steve could build such a large roomy fuselage and still keep the weight within the 650 kg limit. I would imagine the load capacity isn't a great amount. I have to agree with Flightrite, the rig wouldn't win any styling awards - and certainly no interior finish awards!
Marty_d
But... love the lifting body design, the fuselage itself is an airfoil.

I hope he shares his build details with us. I presume that box shape is very rigid, allowing "economies of scale". I believe it also has provision for bedroom, kitchen, bathroom...
Old Koreelah
But... love the lifting body design, the fuselage itself is an airfoil. There are some impressive homebuilts with fuselage blended into the wing, giving immense storage space and pretty good flying performance.
