i have a friend looking at changing a 24 to 24 experimental , wondering if anyone knows what it cost roughly to do this.

there was discussion about it a while back but i can't find the thread.

I too,  was told to change to VH experimental .

One registration  for ' life ' .

Do you think ,  CASA will let " electric " aircraft fly under their regulations? .

Hi,

I did it a few years ago.

As above but $770. I seem to remember it was Darren Barnfield who signed it off. He will also ask if you want an exemption to still fly over built-up areas.

Why not? So I have that.

Cheers,

Neil

24 to e24 can only be approved by a casa appointed person.

L2 can't do the inspection.

Out of idle curiosity;

What privileges (if any) does the E classification confer?

Can the owner/pilot do as an experimental builder can to the aircraft? OR as I suspect, it is a much more limited ie any changes require disclosure to RAA and signing off by an L2 (or above)😈

Hi Neil,

  • How long ago did you receive the "exemption to still fly over built - up areas"?
  • AND was it for a defined period eg 5 years?😈

Many electric pipistrels already legally flying in Australia 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♀️

Electric would be a much more reliable engine with reduced SKILLS to learn how to operate it.  More time to concentrate on other things more important.  Nev

Very similar to fly synthesis storch !  Except for tail feathers.

VH or RAA - each owner should weight the pros/cons.

As I understand matters;

VH

  • Rego for life of aircraft or until changed.
  • Annual inspection by LAIME $$$$$$. If owner/builder it maybe that they can do their own.
  • No third party insurance with rego - must purchase your own $$$ or hope for divine intervention.
  • Licensing also for life, unless a very naughty person.
  • GA licence required to be PIC of aircraft
  • License not valid without a current medical.  Reading many Forum posts would suggests that very basic medical may be self declared or by GP$$$??
  • License not valid without current BFR - likly more expensive with GA instructor.
  • Can fly in controlled airspace.

RAA

  • Annual rego renewal, with third party insurance.
  • Annual inspection - Dont know what the regs are for a factory built, home built, do your own or not, as you please.
  • Annual renewal of flight Certificate & membership RAA
  • Medical - self certified
  • BFR with RAA instructor
  • Can not legally fly in controlled airspace (at this time)

I suspect (don't know) that GA likly to be marginally more expensive

if your 24 is private use you can change to E24 experimental if your engine is out of time instead of buying a new engine, for instance the one i am talking about only has 400 hrs airframe and engine but the 912 is over 15 yrs old so it has to be rebuilt or replaced for 24 reg. and you can also do your own work on it under E24 .

As long as your aircraft is NOT type certified ... Then youre in for a MARAP journey and good luck with that (ask me how I know)

jared said he has to fill out form 11 i think it is and submit it to casa, they will either approve change to E24 on the spot or ask for an inspection . after that approval he goes back to raaus shows them a picture of plane with E decals and pay the fee.  it will be great if its that easy.

Quite a few methinks. Comes up in many discussions. Me, I would love it if formation, IFR and aerobatics were okay with a Class 5 but 🤷

why  would anyone who wants to do all that be going for a self declared medical.  and it definitely should not be for anything like that.

Personally it would work for me. But RAAUS one gives you formation. GA Class 5 doesn't.  Why they are different I've no idea. And many raaus pilots regularly take part in formation flights.  And many people that are eligible for an RAAUS medical are excluded from a Class 5. One example is if you have ever been rejected for a Class 2 you cannot get a Class 5.

But if you have never done the paperwork for class 1/2 but have the same conditions you can get class 5 ?

Wonder if this will change after class 5 review.
