    Bit of set-back Brett. Better luck next time. CASA sent me for a drug test. Hope I haven't failed that one. How do you study for that? Haven't got the result back yet. Is it 80% for a pass?

    First, check the folder configured for maps is correct. Go to File -> Configuration -> Map & Data Files and check the Map File Path is pointing to where you put the .map file. Second, as well as the .map file, the calibration process will have created a .ozf3 file with the calibration info in it. Every .map needs a .ozf3 file. Make sure you copied that in with the .map file. Glad it works well. I was worried about the screen brightness. The Mio units are so much brighter.

    Those mad South Africans flew around the world in their Sling 6 months ago travelling west. Some legs over water were over 3,000k. Around The World Expedition 2009 - The Airplane Factory, Johannesburg, South Africa Going east normally means prevailing winds are in your favour. In a trike, that would be your biggest requirement I'd imagine.

    I've done the inland lane a few times - it's a hoot. I know someone who did it inverted. Just for fun. As I said though, it's hella rough when there's a decent westerly. Looks like you were right Mazda. We can't use the coastal one.

CTR DEACTIVATED OTHER TIMES MAY BE ACTIVATED WITH SHORT NOTICE. PILOT RESPONSIBILITY TO CK AND MNT STS. FROM 12 240500 TO 01 102100 Flying through while deactivated has only had a ceiling change. Now 4500 instead of 8500.

    Thanks Ozzie. I had checked out the changes (but kinda forgot) and have just reread the AIC. The new Class E coincides with R578 A-E and only 4500 - 8500 AMSL. When Willy CTR is activated, the new Class E is subsumed. The whole thing (surface and up) goes to the rules for Mil CTR, which are the same as Class C except where "otherwise advised". The giveaway is point 1 in the FAC. Civil VFR ACFT must contact Willy Clearance Delivery 130.35 to advise FLT details and obtain SSR code before entering WLM restricted areas. SSR code being the show-stopper. So it would appear that Madza is right (quelle surprise!). We shoudn't be going through there when Willy is ACT. I think I speak for everyone when I say "Bugger". Time to finish that PPL (the $1,000 nav to tick off Class D set me back a bit). Oh and FD - Willy is active today.

    Thanks FD - sort of. I'm afraid you've confirmed all the bits we already knew. The important point is whether or not we're allowed to use the transit lane when it is activated. The 24 hours notice cannot be relied upon. The Notam always says "OTHER TIMES MAY BE ACTIVATED WITH SHORT NOTICE. PILOT RESPONSIBILITY TO CK AND MNT STS." As you say - they will broadcast on tower freq, which you are already on because it's CTAF® when deactivated. If Mick is just driving, he's got nothing else to do but talk on the phone. Let's all call him.

    Thanks Andy. You're right. I remember reading that now. I need to get the new chart. It's such a minefield - I wish we had simple guidelines and rules. Even with all the experience on this forum, we have conflicting opinions on such an important coastal route. I'll have to get the definitive answer. Cheers, Ross

    The VNC says the LL for Class E is 8500 for the length of the coastal route. So this is a route through Williamtown Mil CTR Restricted areas - not CTA. I'm fairly sure no Xpndr is required, and I've done it quite a few times and been willing to get clearance and do the route. It's never been activated when I've gone through though (weekends every time), so I haven't had to. Has anyone done it while activated without a transponder? I'm sure I've spoken to people who have. You just tell Willy Clearance Delivery (130.35) "nil transponder". Should be right.

    The inland lane can get very bumpy if there's a wind across the valley. Coast can be a much better option at those times. Weather isn't looking great for Thursday. Weekend is shaping up well though.

    I'm reasonably certain you don't need one. At least, they haven't knocked on my door. It doesn't mention the requirement in ERSA under V1 procedures. You are certainly not watched by Sydney Radar, and there are no RPTs at 500 feet. The requirement is to broadcast your position and direction to anyone else on V1 to provide self-separation.

    Happy new one to you too David. Good to see everyone having a mass debate this morning instead of nursing hangovers. Just a couple of other things, I believe you can only fly RAA registered aircraft if you have an RAA certificate. So for CTA in an RAAus plane, you would need RAAus cert, current PPL, Xpndr and an appropriate engine. Second, you don't need a Xpndr to fly Victor 1. It is a VFR transit lane OCTA.

    Well explained Mazda. I was definitely taught this stuff during RAA training. Not all instructors are created equal. I've noticed the same during GA training. It isn't the syllabus that's lacking, it's the implementation of it during training. While finishing my RAA cert requirements with Peter Wilson, one of the most useful things he did was simply ask me to make the stall warning go off at 60 knots. No clues, just that simple request. I immediately put the J160 into a 60 degree turn and pulled back the stick while easing off the throttle - intending to increase the back pressure and decrease the speed until the stall warning sounded - but it actually went off at 90 knots. He was impressed (I think - it's hard to tell with Peter) and I gave myself an excellent lesson in how stalls can occur at any speed.
