  1. Have a look at the SAM-Aircraft site. ( as advertised in Sport Pilot) The website is a little tedious, But what a lovely aeroplane.....They claim 250 hrs to build. ........
  2. Penfield sounds the best, but you got to get to the closest town for a train. ............. Tyabb is on a train line to Melbourne but it will be a good 75 mins to the CBD. Unfortunately there a NO RAA type airports close to the CBD for obvious reasons. It's always going to be more than an hour away...............
  3. to return excess fuel from the carbs???? What excess fuel???? That does not compute with the fuel regulated by float/ float bowl and needle and seat.. There could possibly a return line so that the fuel "head" is constant...
  4. for airliners the story goes that it has been tried but it was found that the airliner could not stop (in time).. They need the initial braking force of the wheels being spun up at the landing...
  5. Well I got MY motorcycle "ticket" in the early sixties. I worked for Guzzi in Mandello for some time too. It was their work with chrome bores first that led to their patent (Niguisil). I have seen MANY,many bores with over 200,000 kms on them with very little wear. The only time wear was evident was when people took off the air filters. I saw lots and lots of rooted cylinders with nikasil bores but they were all two strokes ( Poor air filtration and ring problems) . And most of them were dirt bikes.......The bores are replatable quite easily and not as dear as a new Jabiru cylinder.............The bores on the D-Motor will be fine....
  6. Hmmm, a thousand engines at a thousand hours each , That's a million hours. Trouble free too, I suppose. Oh ye of little faith, you'll be waitng forever
  7. My reg ran out today. I shall be very surprised if I can get to the Natfly. I did pay and send in required docs about a month ago. BUT when I phoned and asked about progress and was told by Dean that I needed a foto of BOTH sides of the aeroplane in case one side had a different number to the other. Really ! I kid you not.......I wonder who's requirement that was....
  8. I hope you can get my rego done in time for the NatFly!
  9. Dont talk to him or offer him anything... ...you may be accused of trying to bribe him, What a dick head...
  10. Too bloody right. Downunder........All the speculation in the world on the merits and failings mean nothing when compared to the practical demonstration of flying behind one. The Jab DOES HAVE a bad problem with early retirement. The D-Motor DOES HAVE an impressive profile. Time will tell all. I like the design, so there.
  11. my continental 0-200 has thru' bolts, if I remember rightly 9/16" dia...........(14mm) . the thru bolts hold the main bearing caps and cylinders . But the crankcases have a complete " round the edges" set of about 20 x 1/4" bolts. Very difficult to do with machined cases!...The 3300 has very basic design feature that has proved faulty and is almost impossible to correct....I don't ever remember of hearing of a case of broken cylinder thru' bolts in the 0-200, BUT that is not to say it has never happened...
  12. I just read about a new type of battery. Lithium Iron. (no not ion!) Made by Shorai, very very light and not too dear. Is 300CCA enough?
  13. I did hear that Anthony Morrison that used to own/run it moved to W.A. (After building a beaut new hangar) The new owner was very helpful to me but I don't remember his name....
  14. I really don't think that type of isolator should be used. I would stay right away from the caravan type of isolator, just get the correct thing from the US !
  15. Just look at aircraft spruce's website. There is a whole selection of them. Certified if you like...Quite reasonably priced (but watch out for the postage!) A battery isolator has to be essential equipment I would think. So when you throw the off switch everything is really off.......
  16. I read news about the D-Motor. The first production run is being delivered. After some revisions the power is now 95hp, not sure what revs though. Flying weight is 124pounds including everything......! That is very light.....I'd have to lengthen the nose of the Jodel by about 3 foot. . Fadec controlled electronic ign. fuel injected..................... The six is also about to come online quoted at 135hp not sure what weight ? extrapolation gives 186 pounds that's about 50 pounds less than my 0-200! Bloody Jab 230 would go like you can't imagine!
  17. Shirley you mean 50' (foot)...................
  18. too bloody right. If you go to the BRS website it lists the people that survived BRS deployments and the heights that they deployed. I think the lowest mentioned was 100 feet! ANYTHING is better than being a dolop of strawberry jam.
  19. Well I'm going to try, actually, not just try, I will change the pitch using the guidelines from the prop advisor H.I.T.C...................... My aeroplane is not really draggy. I have a good 0-200 that pulls it along quite quickly but the maximum rpm I can attain in level flight is only 2600, (this could be 2800 or more) Thus I am only generating 85 or so HP. Max ground rpm is 2350. So, I have too much pitch!....While it all goes along pretty nicely I like the Jodel to be as good as it can be.................I am a terrible tinkerer...Plus it's a good opportunity to get rid of the lumps and bumps I can see along the prop. (that's what I'm going to tell my wife!)
  20. I can see that. In the series of pictures (15 +16) the blade has been recut to a smaller airfoil shape within the outline of the original airfoil . Is this the only way to de pitch a wood prop? I really need to know. .....................................oops my post was a little late. the information required has just been posted. The main problem I have is that my prop is shaped like an EVRA prop. Very tapered toward the tip ( tip width about 2 inches) so I may end up with a very small tip!
  21. Hmmmm.... yes I see you would only get one cut per setting. I had visions of using a adjustable angle milling vice that I have.....Please tell me how to reduce the pitch on my Sweetapple!!I can hardly wait.....Re: Werner !He loves calls from old friends. 58562154.... He has written an autobiography, very entertaining, with much about early days of ultralighting..................regards, Geoff
  22. Didn't I see an episode of "Air Crash Investigations" Wherein a 2 thousand hour pilot stalled a huge airliner right down to the ground while his crew watched on..Unbelievable.....But still, I believe I have enough nous to observe what is happening ,understand what is happening and take corrective action, I'm certainly not going to pop the chute with paddocks within reasonable gliding distance!...
  23. Thanks for the feedback....Yes I am great friends with Werner, unfortunately he is pretty well buggered now...25 years as a para. does that to a person....I already have a Sweetapple prop, 69 x 54. It has a little too much pitch. My best WOT is 2550rpm. I should like a couple of hundred RPM more. I was reading the Bolly website and they are quite clear that the planform is very important plus the tips should be rounded , not square like mine....I shall read further. I have a milling machine that would eliminate that chain saw work!!!!
  24. You are so correct....The BRS could become an avenue of first resort instead of last resort.....That could be a real problem.... I think that pilots that feel and act like that are doomed anyway... It's really the same thought process as "My Artificial horizon must be broken?" It says I am upside down when I feel I am the right way up, so I'll roll the aircraft...You can't trust instinct, you cant trust senses, you have to fall back on training....Remember the OODA loop on you tube...
  25. I am SO impressed with the hand made prop. Congratulations.....I feel encouraged to try it myself. Tasmaniam oak would be fine I think......I used to fly Wakefields which had VERY specialized props. Very efficient. The pitch distrubution was everything , almost zero at the tips.... ..very technical subject. How do you decide the planform? which if I remember was as important as the pitch distrubution. More please.....
