  1. latest update from news. extremely sad news. Two killed in NSW ultralight plane crash ABC Updated March 6, 2013, 9:30 am Two people are believed to have died in an ultralight plane crash on the New South Wales central coast. The aircraft plunged into Lake Tuggerah about 200 metres off shore about 7:45am (AEDT). Local police, the police rescue helicopter and marine police conducted a search for those onboard. Rescue helicopter spokesman Glen Ramplin says a rescue swimmer has reached the plane, which is three metres under water. "He was able to get down to the plane, but infortunately he was unable to get the occupants out of the plane," he said. "I believe there are two people still trapped under water." Mr Ramplin says police divers are on their way from Sydney. Investigations into the incident are underway.
  2. Looking forward to flying in for the first time and to catch up with all the guys and gals on this forum
  3. Ducksrus Check the date on your card when it arrives. It should be 12months from the day the renewal is granted. I was without rego from 22nd December to the 11 January and my Rego is valid now until 11th January 2014. So no reduction required as you do not pay for the time your plane is not registered, but RAAus will lose the rego money for all of the planes that are grounded for the amount of time each is grounded, if that makes sense. 4. FT There are no stupid questions mate. The product Aeroshell W100Plus is actually a straight SAE 50 weight oil. It is not a SAE 100 weight oil as the name might suggest. So it is ok for automotive oil filters the same as the Aeroshell 15w50 which is a true reflection of the viscosity range of it's oil. If you google Aeroshell W100Plus as I just did you can read all about the product. Safe Flying JabSP6
  5. Old Koreelah The hydraulic motors have always recommended Aeroshell 15w50 or equivalent as Biggles has mentioned. Depending on the climate the solid lifter motors are recommended to use Aeroshell 100w plus but in colder climate you can use Aeroshell 15w50 in them as we'll. Sorry to cause any confusion when I used the words Aeroshell Multigrade. It is just Aeroshell 15w50. Safe flying JabSP6
  6. Back in 2009 i was paying $170/h dual and $130/h solo in a J160 & J170 in Bundaberg QLD. I think it has gone up to about $190 - $200/h dual now.
  7. Jetboy & Rick-p I have spoken to one of the guys over in WA about the modification they have done to the motor. They are keeping this info very close to their chests and have not told me exactly what it is but they will have about 50 hrs on the motor by the end of this weekend. Time will tell how this goes so until they do more hours and check the results we will have to keep waiting. As for the oil nothing has changed here. Still using the Aeroshell 100W plus for the solid lifter motors and the aeroshell multi grade for the hydraulics. Safe flying JabSP6
  8. Pylon500 It's more the insurance cover I'm concerned about but I thought it would be the same as your car rego/insurance when they send the sticker in the mail. As long as you have a copy of the receipt in the car you are covered. Thanks Off to work now in the jab. Safe flying JabSP6
  9. After being grounded for 3 weeks and having to hire a car for the wife and kids to use so i could get to work on Monday (6 hour drive taking my car) as another weeks leave from work was not approved, and having to then drive home friday (another 6 hour drive) i had an email from RAAus stating that my plane rego was now vavlid as of friday 11th January 2013 for a 12 month period to the 10th January 2014. The Rego ran out on the 21st December 2012. At least this answers a few questions about whether RAAus would be just renew the rego from the privious expiry date or not. The email stated the rego card would be sent in the mail. Attatched was a copy of the new rego certificate. My question is that if i print out the rego certificate and put it in the plane and fly to work on Monday with the expired rego card still in the window of the plane would this be legal or do i have to wait until i have the rego card in the window of the plane? My concern is that i leave at 6am in the morning for work and the card won't have arrived before i depart. Just wondering if i need to go through the expense of hiring another car for next week and dring the 12 hour round trip or if flying as stated above would be legal? One positive to come out of this for me is that it only took 3 weeks from the time my file was complete with all the required info to receiving the rego email. I hope all those out there with planes still grounded get sorted out quickly. I won't be able to attend the meeting in February but i will certainly be sending aproxy vote to hopefully ensure this never happens again and people responsible are not voted back in. 10. Horsefeathers My rego ran out on the 21st December. Everything in my File had been updated and was ready for the CASA rep to give the nod since the 21st December but this has still not happened. I have been told that my file is in the pile waiting to be approved but i can't be given a timeframe as to when this will happen as there is still alot of files for him to go through before mine. So Asic 46, things are not back to normal and will not be for a while yet. Another grounded unhappy member JabSP6
  11. Ok. I rang the office on Friday 21st and at 4:30pm received a call back saying we have a picture of the left side of your plane and under the wing shot but no right side shot showing the numbers. I quickly drove to the hanger and took a picture from both sides of the plane showing the rego numbers, printed them out and signed, dated them and email straight back. By this time it was just after 5pm so now the office is shut and I have no indication that my rego is good to go. So this now means no flying until the 7th so no going to work for 2 weeks. Unfortunately I will now have to take 2 weeks holiday's but at least I will get to spend some time with the family. I hope to hear back on the 7th that I can go to work otherwise I will be forced to use up more holidays. So I have now joined the ranks of the grounded. Will keep you posted. JabSP6
  12. Andy My Rego runs out on Saturday 22nd December. I received the renewal forms on the 23rd November and sent the renewal forms back to RAAus on the 3rd December. I then followed that up with a phone call to ask if they received the paperwork and was told that yes they had received the paperwork. I then asked if they could check my file to see if anything was missing so i could also send this in prior to the renewal date. I was told that there were a lot of aircraft that were already out of date and they didn't have the resources to look at my paperwork as they were concentrating on the other aircraft that were currently out of date. At the time i thought this was fair enough. I have since made another phone call today to see if they could look into my file and was told the exact same thing. There were still lots of aircraft that were out of date and they were trying to get through that backlog first and couldn't look into my file. I then went on to say that i use my aircraft to get to work and back and if it runs out friday and can't be renewed by friday i can then no longer go to work until it is registered. The reply from the administration girl (very polite) was that there are still 3 1/2 working days to go until they stop for Christmas and if i could ring back later on that would be great. I told them i would leave it til friday to call again but would not appreciate being told on friday that they still can't even look at my file to tell me if there is anything missing. I guess i am still able to fly home friday so i guess i will have to wait and see if i am able to go to work next week or am forced to sit at home and fall into the same catorgory as many others here having an unregistered aircraft sitting in the hanger over christmas. Can i just say that the girls on the phone at RAAus have always been very polite and professional and it must be hard for them through this time so i hope they get the management and leadership they deserve to keep this organisation going in the right direction. I feel for all those people that have unregistered planes out there. I may be joining you shortly. Andrew (JabSP6)
  13. Ian I hope you and the family have a safe and well earned break in the new year. The site is fantastic with lots of good things available to those that have the time to make use of them. One of the things that i used to use regularly was the plain english area forcast of the weather. I find now that i am having to look at the NAIPS site to get the info but i would really like to be able to view the PEM again on your site. I know there were a few posts on this when the site shut down but i thought i would just ask again if it is possible to have something like this put back on here? Keep up the good work Ian. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your dedicated staff. Safe Flying Andrew (JabSP6)
  14. Andy I have emailed you a copy of a signed form. Maybe to capture the attention of people visiting this site you could add some wording to the heading of this thread in BOLD RED. something along the lines of URGENT. PLEASE READ AND VOTE TO HAVE YOUR SAY. Just a thought. Safe Flying JabSP6
  15. Dazza I have done a bit more research into the UL prices and even rang the Aussie Dealer (Les Elliott) The UL350is comes in at $21400. Then Les said you need the accessories kit $2000. GST has to be paid $2340 Freight to Aus he said is around $1700 So this motor adds up to around $27440 here is Aus. Then you need to sort out a Motor Mount as the 2200 motor mount he believe is not suitable. The UL260is comes in at $17200 Total including accessories, GST and Freight is $22820 here is Aus. I hope this helps. Safe Flying JabSP6
  16. Biggles The Shudder you feel is from the main wheels being out of balance just like when your car tyres are out of balance. If it goes away when you apply the brake then your Nose wheel must be fairly close to being balanced. This shudder can be felt on planes with no camber issues as mine was. The excess Camber doesn't cause the shudder, the balance of the wheel does. My situation was that the shudder improved by hitting the brakes but i still had a slight shudder after this which turned out to be the nose wheelout as well as the main wheels out of balance. The shudder can be eliminated quite easily by simply balancing the wheels. You can statically balance them by fitting the stick on weights to the rim while balancing on an appropriate size shaft in a vice or you can take them to a tyre shop for this to be done. You will be surprised what a differance this makes. Be sure to have all 3 wheels done. As for the Camber issue and uneven tyre wear, the factory is well aware of this and the procedure that JetJR has mentioned is something i have seen done at the factory but does require time for flock to dry. The method you have mentioned can be done quicker and the plane flown straight away and doesn't require messing around with flock. Both work but niether will eliminate the shudder you describe. Both are factory rectifications so it is your choice how to go about it. Safe Flying JabSP6
  17. Dazza I've done some research into this motor as a replacement. I personally am very happy with my 3300 Jabiru motor is my SP6. I am also happy to compile this info for everyone to see without an biased opinion. After all that is what this forum is supposed to be about. Using the vast knowledge and experience of all here so that we can all make our own decissions rather than have to read all the negative critism that always seems to find its way here. The UL motor is a possible alternative but there are a few things that would need to be done first. This info is directly from the UL Power Site so it is from the UL Manufacturer not just made up. The Motor will only bolt up to the 2200 Jabiru motor mount. The 3300 Jabiru Mount is different in that the vertical distance between the top and bottom mounting points are longer than the 2200 mount. Although the ULPower engineis considerably shorter in the volume behind the engine mount plate when compared to the Jabiru, our engine's starter ring gear has a larger diameter and is further back from the engine mount plate. An existing Jabiru mount might have a cross brace on the top section which interferes with our starter ring gear. If the engine mount does have a top cross brace, it may be feasible to transfer it to the lower section. Since the Jabiru's carburettor will often not allow a horizontal cross brace in the lower section, the brace is placed on the top. The ULPower engine is a larger capacity engine producing more torque and weighing more than the Jabiru 2200. If the safety factors used in the design of the Jabiru engine mount have sufficiently large design safety factors, then it may well be suitable for the ULPower engine, but this could only be checked if the design calculations are available. All this info means that the UL Motor could only be fitted to Jabirus with the 2200 mount and this mount and firewall attachment points would have to engineered to carry the addition weight and power of this motor. This i believe has been done with the Rotax 912 and 914 motors so as long as you find someone willing to sign off on this you could use it in a Jabiru. I have put together the info on both motors in this table. I couldn't find any info on the price of the UL motors to be able to put into the table as this would also assist in someones decission but i'm sure someone will be able to help out here. Motor Type Max Power HP Weight KG Jabiru 2200 80 62.8 UL260i 97 72.3 UL260iS 107 72.3 UL260iF 100 72.3 UL350i 118 78.4 UL350iS 130 78.4 Jabiru 3300 120 83.5 Sorry this table didn't turn out the way it was before i added it. There are 6 cylinder UL Motors available now but i couldn't find the weight or price info on these motors. The HP outputs of the 6 cylinders range from 140 - 200 hp. I hope that this info can assist in those looking for options. Safe Flying JabSP6
  18. Hi Ayavner The fuel tanks on Jabs in the wings do have ventilation pipes attached to the fuel caps sticking up in the air. These also have covers fitted when the planes are not in use to stop the possibility of water entering. Safe Flying JabSP6
  19. I ask anyone here that wants to knock the quality of work from a company that has spent millions of dollars setting up with specialist equipment to do a specific job and meet exacting standards, Have you ever been thru the company's doors to have a look for yourself and ask the person responsible (Ian) for building these motors about his machines and workmanship? I have set foot through Ian's doors and have seen these CnC Machines in action and watched the CMM (co-ordinate measuring machine) in the aircon controlled environment and seen documentation that is taken. I must say that it is a credit to Ian. This is one top class facility. Camit only make parts to the standard that Jabiru specify and are often supplied components by Jabiru to assembly these engines. They may even come up with ideas to improve these things, like many people on this forum, but are not allowed to do anything legally without the consent of Jabiru. So those who wish to bad mouth others and listen to all the rumors instead of finding out the actual facts, take the time to have a look through the factory doors yourself, talk with Ian about the machinery and his production methods. Then we shall see if you have the same opinion. Safe Flying JabSP6
  20. Phillip Just curious how many hours were on the motor when you carried out this work? Any chance of posting a picture of the torque plates for the Barrels and Heads? Also can you clarify what was done to the valve guides? Good to hear you have sorted out your oil consumption problems. Safe Flying JabSP6
  21. Herm The Crank Shaft Gear has on the odd occasion been know to fail/crack as you have described. This is why they have changed to a slightly thicker section gear and in turn a different inside diameter seal. One of the main causes of this failure was found to be the clearance between the shaft and the gear was insufficient. In other words the gear was a tight firm fit on the crank and when tensioned up with the flywheel it could lead to the gear being under stress. I believe the new thicker sectioned gear is not only stronger but also runs a slightly bigger clearance so that it is easier to slide it onto the crank. If you do pull this gear off to have a closer inspection and find it is the earlier gear i would definately recomend upgrading to the new gear and seal even if you don't find any problem with the gear. Also when fitting the gear back to the crankshaft make sure the gear fits on easily and goes all the way and bottoms out on the crankshaft. If it doesn't bottom out the internal radius of the gear may not be correct. Keep us informed of your findings. JabSP6
  22. Herm One thing that comes to mind that may have some relevance to this issue is the fact that the Crank Shaft Gear that this rear main seal runs on has been upgraded in the last year or 2. The New Gear has a slightly thicker walled section making the OD of the gear bigger. This in turn also led to the seal being superseeded to a slightly bigger ID. The reason behind the gear being upgraded to a slightly thicker walled section was to overcome a few issues of these gears failing/cracking. Now if you are still running the original smaller OD gear and you have been supplied the new bigger ID seal there could be a possibility that you now don't have enough tension on the sealling surface to be effective which could explain the oli leak at such low time. The change in dimensions of the parts were not huge and i'm not saying that this is the case in your situation but it may be worth looking into. Hope this helps. JabSP6
  23. The clearance OME has listed is what the clearance of the earlier Jab engine used to be (4 thou.) Jabiru have revised the clearance some time ago to 6 thou after numerous issues came up regarding what Andy has mentioned. Air cooled engine must have bigger piston to bore clearances then water cooled engines and there will always be differences of opinion on this matter. Some suggest that even 6 thou is not enough. The design of the piston skirt and the piston material type will determine what is acceptable for clearance. Safe Flying JabSP6
