  2. Let me guess - you think a line of rivets let go and his wheel was about to fall off anyway?
  3. I have to look into my income protection insurance as it is handled through my super fund. My AMP life insurance policy covers aerobatics, and I was surprised about the extent to which they questioned it too. Number of hours per year, class of licence etc.
  4. The "ultralight" became a "Chipmunk specially built for aerobatics"? A Super Chippy perhaps? Hope the pilot pulls through okay.
  5. Ouch a smidge more power or few feet more and would have cleared the fence. Remarkable just how little damage was evident, but probably very low ground speed too.

  7. Channel 9 news reporter just said that a section of wing was found over a kilometer away from the crash site.
  8. I'm no expert, but from the different photos (particularly the ABC ones) there doesn't seem to be a lot of forward airspeed involved. The marks in the soil aren't very long, although they could be entirely unrelated and the pics aren't the best anyway.
  9. There is a big difference between speculating on cause and playing the blame game. I haven't seen anyone trying to attribute blame yet, and if we can't talk about what might have caused problems, there would be precious little of interest to talk about these days. Condolences to the families of those killed. No matter the cause it would be a terrible thing to be told.
  10. I have been along to a couple of SAAA meetings recently with the intent of joining, and found it really inspiring. The conversation was almost exclusively about building, and the first question anyone asked was "What are you building?" If you replied that you weren't yet, the response was to question what was stopping you! If you said that you were interested in RVs, you were steered towards a few people currently building them, then towards a few who were flying them. If you wanted to build in wood, someone with a wood project was quickly found to talk to. Interestingly a number of them weren't yet pilots, while quite a few more only had GFPTs or low hour PPLs. They were there to discuss building first, flying second. But that could just have been the chapter that I went to as well.
  11. ...has there been a sudden influx of colourful KKK members? Given that we in the NES are open and inclusive towards everyone (no matter the colour of their cape, or size of their......
  12. Registration plates, or license plates for our American cousins, are also great to practice your phonetic alphabet and radio calls. My wife and I used to drive around talking in phonetic when we didn't want the kids to understand what we were talking about - worked great until they joined Scouts and learned about it!

  17. I can see the potential in theory for merged organisations, but can't see it working in practicality. I can see absolutely no reason why both organisations can't work closer to share events such as a national fly in, which would work great for numbers attending, reduce costs for traders trying to get to both, create a bigger impact in local economies and ultimately result in better growth for both organisations. Once only has to look at the Ulysses AGM (at least most years anyway) to see what big events can look like.....

  19. Except these days it is more like you pays your money and someone else does their best to take your chances away anyway, while still taking your money.....sadly the quality of aviation legislative decision making seems to be sinking to the level of firearm legislative decision making.
  20. Just in case you don't have it flyerme - a wealth of Nieuport information from a group that has been flying them a long time http://www.kcdawnpatrol.org/index.php I'm pretty sure I read on there somewhere that they all preferred the larger rudder too. A little less authentic look for a lot more control sounds a lot better, especially once off the ground and not looking backwards anyway!
  21. Looks awesome Flyerme, make sure you put some pics up when assembled - preferably taken on a foggy morning! It looks very nice indeed.
  22. Because without rumour and speculation, this is what online discussions would sound like.......... ***cicadas chirping***
  23. Perhaps a revision of the training syllabus will be required by CASA when they become aware that the theory is not equivalent. Or the PPL BAK may also become mandatory.
