  1. Thats the biggest over wing fuel tank I have seen.... must be fairly draggy....lol
  2. I never said do it yourself... but it may be difficult to find an instructor that is happy in the LH seat.. I know lots that can only fly comfortably in the RH seat even tho all the fly dials are LH seat. Surely even "effects of controls" for your wife/pax builds in a level of safety for aircrew as well as civilians on the ground if there is an issue??
  3. I know when I flew GA my flying club had WAGs (Wives & Girlfriends) intro to flying... nothing too technical, just how to fly and land from RH seat. Even a bit of radio work... nothing as per book, just plain speaking on frequency. Surely wouldn't be too hard for a RH seat pax to "feel" a landing or two while PIC did some circuits. After all, I did my solo under 10 hrs.. and they were not circuit hours.. Could be the difference between one injury (like a pilot side birdstrike) or two fatalities... Note: I couldn't get my missus to do it so not for everyone. Some just want to be pax and no more..
  4. At BNE a few years back and an international 757 was told that all runways were closed from midnight due to maintenance and they would have to divert due to the late arrival (headwinds? scheduling?) of 1245am... They gave it a nudge and landed at 1155pm.. I expect the alternative would have cost more than the extra fuel burn to the company..
  5. I find having the phone connected handy, for example I had 40kts headwind on my way to Monto recently and had to call the missus to amend my flight note en-route. BTW with the Zulu bluetooth people couldn't hear any background noise and said it was crystal clear audio.
  6. What a waste.. bring out an inferior product compared to the opposition and expect the loyalists to pay top dollar for it... We just need the aviation software gurus to become multi-platform and we all would be happy..
  7. "on GPS select - GOTO, then enter the 4 letter code for the destination, then press enter. Follow line until overhead field. watch out for other aircraft." end of Nav lesson...lol
  8. I missed the near miss.... looked like a hit to me..
  9. looks like a typical (inverted) circuit to me..lol You must have inflatable rotors for the sea landing... remember inverted fuel tanks have a time limit lol..
  10. http://australianaviation.com.au/2012/10/six-f-111s-find-their-final-home/ Most know that all F111s have been de-commissioned. So how is it that after 37 years in QLD that we get one display in YCDR yet NSW get 3 displays? I understand YAMB gets one but hardly public access. Or are they going to park it next to the Canberra at the front gate? Most of us Techs found working on the 111 was a pig, but we still had a soft spot for her.... Some of my pics: Cheers
  11. I like the idea of a Caribou as a tourer if they were still around... keep a car in the back when you arrive for getting about. Plenty of room to deck out the back as a camper as well.. The fuel consumption would be an issue tho.. For fun I always liked the lines of the Macchi.. pity about the wings..lol but I am ex RAAF so have a soft spot for these..
  12. I would have thought the search pattern was a bit further south (according to Flightradar24.com) as most locals know of the Kilcoy to Caboolture corridor when there is low cloud around the ranges. I flew back on Sat arvo and I flew down to Kilcoy to avoid "tiger country" around the Connondale National Park ranges. And that was 5500' vfr.
  13. AGL Rescue pilot indicated they entered cloud on CH10 news
  14. I think the yellow AN-2 would also be possible, but I don't think it went to Monto??
  15. I heard a report that it was returning from Monto to YCAB . 6 PoB and possibly a historical aircraft? Did the DH84 stay that long?
  16. That also suggests a hypothetical: If a situation (weather etc.) arises and you were overflying any of these fields, would you sub-consciously push on to the next best (free) strip? Making decisions out of spite is not uncommon, just like push-on-itis. After all, a successful off field landing is as cheap as they come..lol
  17. Android app Flight Book. Lets you enter data and create custom fields. I am still using freeware (add supported) but is cheap to buy (no adds). Also has an option to log in real time (execute flight) by using GPS but it states it is experimental and I have not used it. Opening page has custom summary sheet which is handy. Also can save backup to xml. I found it easier to create the xml logbook on PC then import it, rather than enter it all on the phone. They also back up data to a server if you want that option
  18. Hey Ryan, I have a digital VTC but unsure of the date. It shows C class from Surface to FL out to 11 DME from YPAD then steps up to 2500 out to 20 DME. Next step is 4500 at 36 DME No black line on mine.. but it may be out of date..
  19. Hi Tomo, I was instructed that we need cowl flaps open when you have high power and low airspeed, like take-off. Once in the circuit for landing, temps should have stabilised from the descent and cowl flaps can add drag for the landing phase (depending on type). Yes, they also should be ready for a go-around. At the end of the day, it is easier to have them locked in a checklist than going through more assessments during the landing phase. Matt
  20. While I can see all the logic in this statement, the best part is your signature "never stop learning".... lol
  21. Hi Kyle, For clear covers try a hobby store for a scale P51 canopy or the like. Aerodynamic and light. Matt
  22. Neil, is that: First Time For Parachutes? Follow The Failed Prop? or Feel The Force, People? Matt
  23. Hi Enoch / boingk.. A NiMh battery charges different to a SLA so be aware of that. Also, due to any possible high current draw, I would recommend mechanical connections of the battery pack rather than soldered joins that are subject to failure due to vibration, unless you have aircraft experience in this area. Nice A/C ..... why is it named BOB? Cheers
  24. Ouch!.... makes Tomos buy excellent value! But it is a piece of history being #002... I wonder how much they were brand new. Thanks Nunans!
