  1. So are you suggesting they just do it during RPT movements? RPT already get advice of any reported aircraft from Centre? Maybe te answer is to get more aircraft reporting their intentions (flight plan/radio/transponder) but then this means we are taking on the responsibility for safety rather then passin it off to someone else. This is also the time when they are at their most "readiness" to respond to Fire and Rescue tasks. I trust their opinion if they say it would be less safe for them to do so and take away from the current duties
  2. Not all responses would result in casualties. ie unsafe gear induction, ARFF attend but aircraft lands safely with no gear failure. The 28 lives saved my guess would refer to first aid responses rather then fire an rescue of a crashed aircraft. Either way they do a great job. I'm sure Unicom trained operators will also do great, why not train the aerodrome reporting officer to do the job? Or fuel operator or baggage handler? How much are pilots prepared to pay for this service as it won't be free regardless on who does it.
  3. I have a mate who is a Qld State fire fighter, he says they average about one house fire a year, maybe we could get them fixing pot holes during the down time? Ask him how often he had to do fire drills, simulated aircraft crashes, responding to on airport fire alarms, provide first aid response and various other training activities that are conducted on a daily bases. ADS-B isn't used at the capital city airports either (other then on the aerodrome ground surveillance systems). It's an En-Route surveillance system used in areas where radar coverage doesn't exist. There is a map somewhere on ASA website that shows the coverage at various levels.

I don't blame Angus for not wanting to take on the legal responsibility, it's all about risk assessment and they (assume he had advise from both ARFF and ATS) decided that taking guys off the active roster to learn how to do "part time Unicom" will cause them to loose the ability to keep up to speed with the skills required for their main function. If Dick or Ballina want a Unicom, why don't they employ and pay someone to do the job rather then demanding that someone else who has no knowledge of aircraft traffic or weather do it.
  5. But it's not what they signed up for, they are employed to do the job of Fire and Rescue, not take on the responsibility for providing traffic and weather information to pilots. It's like asking the Postman to collect the recycling bins just because he is driving down the same street. Two very different jobs with extremely different responsibilities. If Flight Information Service is required then it should be done by those trained to do so. But then the person who has been so vocal in the papers on getting Unicom is the same guy who pulled the plug on FIS.
  6. How do you cover off all that's required in the Flight Review? Do you do any instrument (under the hood) flying? Any sort of Nav activity, or are you just doing a couple of CCTs and maybe a stall? (Assuming it's CASA Flight review)

  9. no one is talking about D airspace, towers don't just pop up over a few months, takes years of planning and resourcing. Why do you not think its fair for firies who have no traffic training refusing to take on the role of Unicom? How many RAA flyers in current E airspace actually contact FIA and put in flight plans?
  10. It's helpful to know if someone is first (or low time) solo, ATC tend to give instructions at a slower pace, give a more thoughtful eye over compliance and provide whatever assistance they can. Nothing wrong with planning "RMK/First Solo Nav"

  12. I've often seen LJR NOTAMS over Atherton tablelands and over the reef, usually USAF out of Townsville returning from sorties further north.
  13. cruising levels go out the window if one or both were on approach to an aerodrome (suggestions the Jet may have been doing instrument training). This is a problem with E airspace (not saying this happened in E), one aircraft "under control" of ATC and another going about his business without needing to tell anyone of his intentions
  14. it's nonsense to think an IFR aircraft can be separated from an unknown radar return who's altitude is unverified, aircraft type unknown and intentions unclear. I'm not saying we need to change uncontrolled airspace, I'm saying there is a need for the controlled and restricted airspace we have now.
  15. there is no separation outside controlled airspace. Why bother with a radar service, make it controlled airspace and give the controller the tools they need to provide the separation you deserve.

  17. You don't need the endorsements to fly, only if you are going cross country, using the radio or operating in controlled airspace. Yes you need a current flight review to fly, that isn't different to any license class or even the pilot certificate. Nothing has changed since Sept 2014, it's the same requirements as back then.
  18. No it's the same it has always been. (Since part 61). RPC gets you RPL but any endorsements will need to signed off by an instructor. For them to sign you off you need to meet certain requirements (ie 2 hrs instrument flight time for Nav). I actually spent about 5 hrs getting up to speed with the aircraft type (c172 from j160), this included the 2 hrs flight instrument, radio, CTA/CTZ and flight review. I was lucky in that the club I went through did both GA and RAA so they were across the differences in the aircraft. But I had the RPL issued by CASA before I had started in the c172, that's the part that converts over with just the form (I already had the medical and ASIC).
  19. The 2hours instrument flying is only for the Nav Endorsement and the English Prof for the Radio Endorsement. Both worthwhile endorsements to have but not actually required for a RPL. Personally I sent the paperwork for just the RPL and got my endorsements signed off during my flight review.

  22. Just to clarify bull, the survey regarding the magazine going digital was both online and included in the March magazine, the option to fill out the form and mail it back was there.

Private pilots can use tablet devices as a primary means of in-flight documentation, as long as the documentation is from an authorised source (such as Airservices, OzRunways, AvPlan, Jeppesen, Lido, Navtech or Aerostratos). There is no requirement for secondary source. If your primary doesn't work then you don't meet the regulation.
  24. You don't need maps, ozrunways is fine for our recreational use. As long as you can show the working device with app should you be ramp checked. Personally i print out an A4 copy (print screen style) incase I have any issues inflight.
