  1. $1.3B for 1000 of these new vehicles, they want to be good at $1.3M each certainly an upsell from the defenders.. Possibly our govt subsidising enough to get critical mass so they can then gear up for exports..
  2. If you want to really understand your market, you need entry and exit surveys... every time someone fails to renew they should be offered a survey several times to find out why...what caused them to leave... similarly if someone does a TIFF and does not follow through we need to find out what got them to the TIFF and what stopped the progressing into training... ..its best if its done on the phone because you can ask the 3-5 why's to get to the real reason... When they say its too expensive, ask why, then they say because they have other priorities , ask why or what...then they say they have 4 kids a HECS debt and owe $25,000 on credit cards and a $500,000 mortgage... we now know that person was never a realistic prospect....but may be a long time in the future... this has nothing to do with price.... On a written survey you just cant get this level of understanding as to the real reasons...and even in person you cant get it unless your prepared to ask why , what why what why till you get the real reason... generally on the 3rd approach the real reason shines through..
  3. The perfect sentence to make you sound twice your age...wink nudge
  4. Cheers shags that's awesomeness right there... very valuable info for all ...
  5. Pilot survives Gascoyne light plane crash as distress signal helps rescue efforts A PILOT has been rescued after crashing his light plane in WA’s Gascoyne region. The pilot is reported to be uninjured. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has been coordinating a search and rescue operation following the crash. The crash site is about 315km east of Carnarvon. The crash occurred about 8am. “A distress beacon alert was detected by AMSA Search and Rescue at 10.14am (AEST),” AMSA said in a statement. “A Royal Flying Doctor Service plane was diverted and observed a person waving near aircraft wreckage. “AMSA Search and Rescue has tasked a rescue helicopter from Coondewanna mine which is en route to the crash site.” The rescue chopper landed at the site this afternoon and the pilot is being transferred to Parabudoo. “The pilot was the only person on board. Police could not reach the site due to the difficult terrain,’,” an AMSA spokeswoman added. The spokeswoman said the pilot was not seriously hurt.
  6. I find they are either stalling, or this is occurring 99.99% of the time... I would suggest in over 100 hours in our local circuit , I have never had an honest distance from a heavy on straight in ever! As for cutting inside, I often do it these days , simply because I can visually see they are outright lying! When they call 5 miles and they are still a spec way up really high, I know they are outright lying. I have even taken out the stop watch and timed them and often they take over 5 minutes from their 5 mile call to touchdown...now tell me how that is even possible in a Dash 8 or ATR 72 or a Caravan etc . They should be around 95-105 knots on late final, so 5nm should never take anywhere near 5 min I often get them call 5nm or 10nm and so i used to extend downwind , sometimes i found I was over 7nm south of the field when i passed them and I was abeam mid field when they called 10nm...impossible...wrong and rude... its happening less lately so Im not sure if someone has had a go at them, but its still very inaccurate
  7. Even if it is a break through it would be a long long long time before I would fly in it...when carbon fibre and aluminium first got used in most sporting applications, its fail rate was more than ridiculous, 100x dangerous and 1000x acceptable risk... mountain bikes took 10 years to get it right... the good thing was you could take it back to the shop for a warranty...somehow in aircraft....i think they might be combing through the dirt trying to find the failed part.
  8. I had a dick in a Cessna Citation overtake me on downwind on Sat... within 1/2 nm of the threshold on early downwind... I made a call at 10nm , about to join and joining downwind...then he calls me up as he is overtaking me on the inside too! #dick
  9. I was taught, read and consistently hear that a straight in approach must give way to circuit traffic... https://www.casa.gov.au/sites/g/files/net351/f/_assets/main/download/caaps/ops/166-1.pdf 6.7 Straight-in approaches 6.7.1 Straight-in approaches are not a recommended standard procedure. However, Regulation 166B of CAR does not preclude pilots from conducting straight-in approaches provided certain conditions are met. Pilots who choose to adopt a straight-in approach should only do so when it does not disrupt, or conflict with, the flow of circuit traffic. Paragraph 166 (2) (b) of CAR requires a pilot conducting a straight-in approach to give way to any other aircraft established and flying in the circuit pattern. Nonetheless, pilots conforming to the circuit pattern – particularly on the base leg – should continue to check for traffic entering along the final approach path. My opinion of that is if you push in and back track, forcing an extension or go around your a #### Its really bad airmanship to disrupt the circuit from any approach to the circuit, however at some of these busy training airports you wont get a slot in the circuit if you don't ask... but a straight in is not ok, unless you do so with no disruption to anyone.
  10. Thanks Ian...... So one of the issues for going past say Coffs is 6/10 times you get squeezed by cloud and mountains so there is no possible way to predict an accurate track... Also the flight path if there is any cloud below 6000 is fairly difficult ... because you tend to fly up the coast, turn west and underfly the steps , then climb to get over the mountains, but stay under the cloud ... On a clear day its much safer to climb to 5500 or 6500..but 50% of the time that's impossible due to cloud. So you tend to under fly the steps , climb as high as you can and scud run past the mountains at the safest points you can see... In this case do you think the ATC would prefer to know we are there with just and ident or would they prefer to flight follow us ??? The other are where i think it would be particularly useful was around Caloundra..it was extremely busy... you have the local caloundra traffic, then all the north south traffic ducking under the airspace, trying to stay above the circuit and trying to stay west of the sunshine coast approach... add some cloud around 2500-4500 to that area and again its a very hard area for non locals to have a flight plan and stick to it... The catch 22 from my perspective is these areas tend to be high traffic, but the compression of CTA and other factors causing the high traffic, also is what makes it hard to stick to a designated flight path, except on the clearest of days.
  11. Despite such a small group its certainly panning out exactly how I see it every time I attend and event, club, flyin or meet other RAA pilots... i doctored up a slight correction of the poll numbers above for the possible guestimated under representation so far and i think its what we thought from passive observation. If this is true its exactly what i thought in regards to our best dollar and time spend for attracting new skin to the game is in the 40+ bracket... look at how it gap jumps the previous categories... clearly based on a tiny tiny sample so dont read too much into it... but lets wait see or perhaps someone can ask RRAus for a membership some great spelling included too...#lazyass

  13. Dont judge too early all the oldies are in bed and we will wake up and the polls may have reversed
  14. Definitely the ability to buy a factory plane and go flying and or travelling...if they where only suitable for laps, i prob wouldnt have justified the expense over motorbikes for local fun. Although having said that our previous CFI said the vast majority of new pilots into our club get an RPC and never do x country I can only speak for me and my perception of our club at Port Macquarie.. But we are a pretty big club...i think around 200 with 140 or so active pilots...?? I heard that but dont quote me on those numbers. Our biggest group is 60plus most are ex GA but there is a decent number new to aviation Then there is a group of 40-50 year olds not so large finally getting the mortgage under control this is much smaller then the older group but has a steady flow of new comers. Then there are a few younger ones. Mainly either scholarship holders, going cpl later or have grand parents or parents who fly... The real potential growth seems to be in the 40-65 age group. They can afford it, they will probably stay active and involved ..most our new comers are in this group. I personally think scholarships are not that effective...lots do the 10 lessons and then give up...id rather see 10 kids all get a Tiff or 10 x 40-65 year olds who show genuine interest get a subsidised TIFF... I dont think too many clubs research thier market very well... In soccer or rugby its all about junior development... But from my perspective it seems our junior development is definitely in the 40-65 bracket not the under 40's
  15. On my trip the other day i heard several including what i thought where RAAus aircraft asking for flight following from Brisbane...none had lodged plans, but brisbane was happy to comply... I did a mini one going past coffs and they got me to ident...and they tracked me .... But in future i might get one the entire way as they gave me a heads up on two approaching aircraft which is always nice, especially inthat area
  16. Does anyone here use flight following and in what circumstances do you use it as apposed to a flight plan... Also how many people lodge flight plans when fliying RAAus aircraft not in cta...
  17. haha...that could be taken soooooo wrongly...i think you dirty barmaids have very sick minds..
  18. Real men have more toys than boys!
  19. Boys never grow up they just get more expensive toys...he who dies with the most wins! lol
  20. Talk about living like a cat...I wonder how many lives this guy has left.
  21. Damn had no idea it was on we flew past noosa today and would have loved to have dropped by...must of had my blinkers on

  23. Flight from Port Macquarie to Lismore, Lismore to Fraser Island (Orchid Beach), then overnight at Hervey Bay, and back to Port Macquarie Silky smooth, picturesque....these pics are from mount warning northwards. Mount Warning - NSW near Murwillumbah Flying between the mountains under the 6500ft CTA from Murwillumbah to Hinze Dam at Nerang About to turn sharp right and head for the coast south of Q1 - Gold coast You can prob guess this one at 500 ft Whales everywhere, but damn hard to get a good shot with an iphone I think this was the Northern edge of Moreton Island The big sink hole thats been on the news near Fraser Island and Rainbow Beach Fraser Island - one of the many fresh water lakes North bound along Fraser Island Orchid beach for lunch Heading back along west coast of Fraser for Hervey Bay - wow the water along here was amazing...but the bumps where horrendous Heading south 1000ft
  24. my point exactly Mick, all of these technologies will creep in with enough time and money...when they are doing it with models this size its only a matter of time till a "proper aircraft"pulls it off. Models, technology and real aircraft capabilities are merging at an incredible rate The only thing holding them back is certification and or governing bodies... someone will pull it off soon enough.. I see foamies doing it all the time , but this size model is impressive muchness
  25. Give it less than two years i reckon and they will do this in 1POB aircraft
