  1. Important update re aviation English....i stumbled upon this...CASA didnt know this and despite repeated phone calls even to the head of section they got it wrong... For english test see the Guidance section on this form http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/manuals/regulate/fcl/form61-9elp.pdf An applicant for a recreational pilot licence (RPL) needs to be proficient in general English. Applicants have to show evidence of an acceptable background in English and be interviewed by their Head of Flying Operations (HOFO) to qualify for an RPL. RPL applicants are not expected to know about aviation terminology, or to be familiar with the aviation environment. Therefore, the level 6 expert speaker assessment is not appropriate. Applicants who are fluent in English yet do not meet the schooling or employment criteria for the GELP English standard can be assessed by a CASA-approved assessor, instead of sitting one of the accepted general English language tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS. This form is used for this purpose
  2. So far $187 for the medical $50 for the licence fee about 3-4 hours all up for flight review and CTA $900-1200 2 hours on the ground $120 Looks like $1300-1500 ish but the way i look at it , is it gives me much better value for my aircraft use as i can fly through airspace with safety rather then around and more importantly it opens up many many more places and events that i would like to fly to and use my aircraft as transport... So i think i will get my moneys worth in about 12-18 months If i do the flight review in a 172 or 182? ?? i can also hire those if or when i want to take the family or parents away. If i didnt own my own aircraft i would probably not do it.
  3. Ok since even CASA helpline dont know whats going on I will save some people a lot of headaches. My local flight schools and I have spent ages on this because even CASA was confused about how to proceed. With many different answers from the same staff on the same helpline.. Despite what the glossy brochure says above this is what you actually have to do: Fill in CASA form form61-1ra and form61-9pic and form61-1re Submit certified copies of everything in those forms including a copy of your paper pilot certificate Have the flight review submitted to CASA by the CASA Level 1 or Level 2 instructor or ATO (this took 3 phone calls to work out who was qualified to do it). Undertake a flight review - note thats not a flight check. A flight review includes both inflight instruction and inflight assessment plus on ground stuff and is likely to be more then an hour or two. It is wise to incorporate your Controlled Airspace and Aerodrome Endorsements into that You will also need to attain a level 4 to 6 Aviation English Proficiency , to be granted your endorsements which includes Radio. Without it your radio endorsement is not valid. This involves going to a flight school that has an ATO. An ATO can only approve level 6. To get a lower level apparently you need to go to an assessment center eg a uni and they charge for a course and exam. Just get an ATO at a flight school to do it. Ok these are the pages you will need to refer to Page 80 PAges 6-11 http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/newrules/parts/061/download/part61-mos-schedule2.pdf Page 574 Page 573 http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/lib100212/part-61-instrument-vol4-schedule-5.pdf PAge 651 http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/lib100212/part-61-instrument-vol4-schedule-8.pdf http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/lib100191/rr61_rpl_fs.pdf Then if you want to enter CTA and fly with more then one passenger you must have a Class 2 or 1 medical. Go the class 2, The doctor told me its easier to pass then the Recreational Aviation Medical which is about 12 pages compared to about 6 for the class 2. Hope this helps as you would not believe how long this has taken to work out...
  4. Just back to my original point .even sydney is only moving around 73% of its capacity ....yes its bedlam at times, because they wont spend the money to build buildings until they are forced to by pure economics....but if Sydney is 73% then Brisbane must be 35 % or less... I fly a lot and i have never queued or waited at Brisbane even 20% as long or often as i do at Sydney every time i fly... I fly about 75% out of Syd and 25% from Brisbane, but plenty enough from both to compare the two. Yep i get the runway needs the duplication, but the rest of the airport will be twenty years from justifying freight or passengers leaving Brisbane and transiting to a separate hub... Ft. Gold Coast is a different story because of its unique tourism proposition and population. It has a unique economic moat as a tourist destination.... The other thing is the changing dynamics of airport use. Years ago a few carriers used large airport space very inefficiently and flew high cost passengers with plenty of room at multiples of weekly wages.... Today the budget carriers are moving the bulk of passengers carrying far more pax per aircraft and using less terminal space due to fuller aircraft and low cost drive for efficiency. They lease a gate for under an hour and then vacate the gate for another user, which massively contributes to available airport capacity. But the secondary effect is it makes justifying new airports and terminals extremely difficult. Asx:SYD owner of Sydney airport claim they are twenty years from economically justifying a second Sydney airport so its difficult to see how Brisbane can. Theres a case to argue they already have Bankstown and Camden... But i think we are talking large scale freight and Pax and if we where to count them then we would need to include those surrounding Brisbane already.
  5. We need a senate party that just stands for efficiency and cutting red tape. They need to insist every workplace has a 1:2 ratio of OH&S buffoons to efficiency officers......business would fund it by the millions oH&S has and will continue to kill the future of this country till the safety morons are controlled. Yes accidents are terrible and must be prevented. But the morons who rip up good footpaths or playgrounds because they are x years old, or ban children from cart wheels ought t be hung put to dry for the morons they are... Thats not safety , its utter BS and we ought to highlight these idiots for the blight they are on pur living standard...
  6. Dazz my point was not about Brisbane runway. It was about total airport capacity and the lack of a need for others to take Brisbane freight or pax. Anyway lets not over analyse this shit. All i meant was ya joking if ya think its commercially viable for Brisbane residents or freight to leave via Anywhere but brisbane A 15 minute occasional delay will never warrant permanent movement of freight or pax 30 minutes. Its pure economics. To warrant a regular 30 min pax or freight diversion ypu would need a 1 hour regular delay minimum, or a reasonably regular 90 minute delay... Eg if i get freight or pax delayed by 30 min 183 days per year , that warrants a 15 minute diversion. So an average 15 minute delay at brisbane between 7 am and 10 am, then 5-8 pm daily 183 days per year only warrants a 7 min further trip for freight or pax during those hours... But average it out and nothing in Brisbane warrants freighting pax or freight more then 5 min further...
  7. Singapore is currently capable of 70M pax pa and only processes 48M pa.. I have been through it and to compare it with Brisbane not reality... It has 100 carriers and is in a different league to Brisbane... Thats afternoon its not peak hour...hit Singapore at 10 am then tell me Brisbane is busy. But even Singapore is well below current capacity at approx 60%
  8. Wow KP , what the hell are you saying... That makes no sense at all
  9. As i said..runway upgrade yes...rest of it is a half baked country airport, far from operating at capacity.. Go fly a bit elsewhere, come back and you will know what im talking about...this is the quietest city airport i fly through anywhere... I love it, a 5 -10 minute delay is considered big... Thats early at sydney or melbourne , hong kong, KL etc...
  10. Yes i grant perhaps a second runway could be justified, but basically in my opinion the rest of the airport is so far below capacity you r dreaming if you think it needs upgrading, let alone warrants freight or passenger transport to Townsville Go fly in and out of Sydney or Melbourne, Hong Kong or Beijing for a while and you will soon realize what a joke the traffic and people are at Brisbane ... Its a big country airport basically You guys are kidding if you think Brisbane is near capacity
  11. Heck has question marks as the land owner is trying to have them moved on, last i heard they where heading to court ..
  12. Because both times like the other 20 times i have been in and out of Brisbane recently its been peak hour and i waited two people deep at security, no line up for ticketing, the lounges are empty, the food shops are quiet, the planes are nearly always on time and we hardly ever get delayed flying in or out or have delays for access to the runway... And most planes i fly on out of Brisbane are significantly emptier as well. I often fly on aircraft out of Brisbane that are more then half empty, where as the times i have flown out of Sydney I have never once been on a half empty aircraft. I know Sydney is an absolute joke, but seriously Brisbane is so far below capacity, you could hardly make an economic case for trucking people or cargo that far... (from Brisbane) No im not suggesting anything, just saying how quiet and below capacity that airport is..
  13. I flew in and out of Brisbane twice this week on Virgin....that airport is so under capacity...cant see how it can be economic to truck people or freight that far...
  14. Thanks i just contacted my CASA examiner and he said he is working thru the entire part 61 Cheers thanks for that
  15. On the form 61-1RE For the CTAirspace and CTAerodrome endorsements it says The following requirments where met for applicable endorsement at the time of assessment: CTAirspace Endorsement Tick box - Holds a flight radio endorsemnt - im fin i got that in my RAAus Certificate Tick Box - Pass in Aeronautical Knowledge Examination for the endorsement So does that mean to get the CTA i will need to do the CASA BAK, even though i have already done the RAAus tests... PS I have RAAus Pilot cert with XCountry and PAX plus obviously radio as part of that 130 hours
  16. Cheers thanks We have an approved CASA examiner who also happens to be an RAAus instuctor..so i will get him to do it And go class 2
  17. I want someone to buy the aldi tablet and try it... we should all tip in $5 for someone to give it a go
  18. So I want to make sure i have this correct as i am booked in for a class 2 medical on 15th sept Im going RPL for two main reasons 1. To regularly fly thru controlled airspace and to land at controlled aerodromes 2. To very occasionally fly a four seater with more then one passenger So i need a class 2 medical right ?? Not this : Recreational Aviation Medical Practitioner’s Certificate Also once ive done the medical i then need a check flight with a casa examiner... But who does the CTA training??
  19. Great idea ...it doesnt replace the need to check NAIPS but it sure does help a pilot build a mental picture of current conditions which lets face it are not always accurate in NAIPS... I like it... I have had plenty of times where i wished i could have just got a webcam up to confirm my mental picture was reasonably accurate... Plus im a very visual learner like most so it couldnt hurt... Now all you need to do is box it up , multiply the price by 30000 and sell it to CASA
  20. Hate to tell ya Pylon, but they are based in Port and will remain in Port. Kempsey is going to be used by "some" not all... All the staff are based in Port , they have a lot more infrastructure and planes here ....but yes they are moving some to Kempsey for ab init. I have heard from a very reliable person that Port is now the number 1 priority for a tower and that its already being planned and designed and that Coffs Harbour tower is going to be axed to allow the budget for Port Tower.... stuffs me why they dont just put Port on its own CTAf and discard the need for a tower altogether.. We all cope now except for the fact irrelevant Taree and Oldbar traffic is stomping all over us because of the hills between, when there is 4 or 5 in the circuit area here.... Seems the dumbasses at CASA would rather put in towers then separate a CTAF
  21. I must say his choice of words about punching through issues concerned me. But actions speak far louder then words, so lets give him a chance amd not jump to any conclusions...perhaps his enthusiasm and inexperience is exactly whats needed to make some changes?? I give him credit for speaking publicly, if it opens a dialogue and improves communication to members then its all good, even if he does trip on his words a little.
  22. Not sure if theres any others. But these are the only airfields in ozrunways Also it may be worth calling. A freind told me some airports will accept you without an asic as long as they know you are coming. They will apparently escort you??? ive not tried this but it could be worth a phone call??
  23. And a huge thanks to all who put their hands up both past and present. Your efforts are very much appreciated...
