  1. Agreed, few would be using anything else but W100+, I guess the problem is that people ARE using W100+, are changing oil at 25 hrs and still having corrosion, ring, valve and other problems. So much so that manufacturer has developed entire new engine components with plated alloy barrels to reduce the issue. Plenty RAA aircraft do very small hours, like <50 per year, and might need special corrosion proofing. The Camgard ASL product is being promoted by guys from large aero engine shop in US and Mike Busch so not without some backing. Seems maybe Exxon are using a version of Ed Kollins additive package in their Elite oil - its on the web, must be true! If you read documents here The CamGuard Chronicles - Camguard theres some strong advocates. Also "ASL Camguard has been “accepted” by the FAA Engine & Propeller Directorate for normally aspirated engines. What that “acceptance” means is that the FAA wrote ASL a letter saying that they are persuaded that Camguard “does no harm” when used in normally aspirated engines." Mike Busch There is some data of corrosion tests against Aeroshell 15W40 and others but link is dead. So maybe only downside would be wasted money?? Sports Plus is recommended for use with 100LL in their documents
  2. "Incidentally, aviation oils do not contain detergents." AeroShell Sports Plus does
  3. Thats good news, I expected incorrectly and exaggerated a bit, forgive me. Good articles too. If the requirement is simply SAE spec then there is no certification. Manufacturers can claim what they like once it reaches this benchmark AND just because a Standard changes, doesnt mean the legacy products themselves do too. A brave move to alter things much Id have thought seeing how incredibly complicated oil formulations appears to be. Still to see what changes have been made in W100 other than an additive being included in the Plus version. They also then mention 15W 50 offers similar benefits? Does it contain Plus additive? - edit seems it does (Theres been some poor results with this product, so much so its been removed from recommendations by Jabiru) The benefits of Shell LW16702 , seems reads the same as Camgard and others. Unlike other auto additives it is expressly designed for aviation. Would seem Camgard has been accepted by engine manufacturers - not sure to what level or to what level is required if theres no proper cert process. Shell seem to be saying additives are no good, except for ours..... Some work was done on Sports Plus in engines other than Rotax with excellent results, however all ceased I think when Shell sold out Aeroshell products line. Not sure how Shell are involved now.
  4. All true So we have aircraft flown irregularly, known problems with bore corrosion and rings binding, common stuck valves - overall pretty crook reliability and longevity record Run on old spec (but high quality) oils and no obvious choice of newer types At the least it a market hole for additives to help. Some would see it as drawing technology from far more advanced auto engine industry as mentioned. Has anyone used Camgard?
  5. “the oil companies are constantly finding and adding new additives that provide improved performance, thus changing the game as they go.” Cant be, the aviation oils are somehow certified remember Id expect W100 today will be the same as a century ago. W100+ is an upgrade..........with an additive. Certification kills competition and development Aero engine here makers have a choice of just three oils, two are considered not suitable. How much effort is put into the other one by its owners in terms of R and D? Pretty sure they closed their AU tech office down. There are owners having lots of problems and looking for any way to reduce them. Manufacturer has solved all problems with a new model engine but that doesnt help many. The slick marketing or facts does play into their minds for sure but if theres some fact there is it worth it to try. In addition some of the best Jabiru maintainers around are using additives in both fuel and oil with good results. Regulation limits this application to homebuilts of course.
  6. “engine developers spend mega millions on research“ Are we still talkng about Jabiru? Customers are the engine developers. If theres an additive that helps prolong engines life, Id suggest it would be cheap at double the current cost of Camgard We arent talking cheap auto engines
  7. Anyone have updates on Camgard being used? Particularly in Jabirus? Some good reports on Moreys I was hearing, but at reduced rate. Any info on this?
  8. As I said, Jabiru built aircraft DO NOT use a dock, its a hole cut in panel and bracket to mount garmin mount to, it isnt square and is a profile fit around gps unit So no it doesnt fit in 296 hole.
  9. Sure it fits in hole for 296? Jabiru have profiled hole for 296 not a dock.
  10. I recall someone had a system with a bright light attached to fuel tank somehow, when turned on level could be seen more clearly
  11. RAA didnt run Ausfly so the fence cost them nothing They were one of several sponsors, not even the largest, Really should attend RAA meeting or watch one as these points are raisd and answered at each one What exactly do you want to cut out to bring RAA into profit? Wages, salary? Who would run it? Capable people cost money and with the amount of pointless complaining that goes on, who would want the job? The management isnt there to become friends with everyone of 8000 members, RAA was in deep trouble based on previous mismanagement and it will take time and pain to get out.
  12. RAA decided to cut off the bleeding and risk from a stand alone Natfly that few were attending, spend a small portion of the money on Ausfly and increase spend taking meetngs and sponsoring flyins around Australia Yes more travel costs but saving overall. Pretty logical approach Id have thought Losses are reported to be decreasing and there is a plan. Seems some might need to attend a meeting or two and hear what RAA actually has to say. Possibly do you think values of property in regional centres firstly havent kept up with Sydney returns you indicate OR they were inflated originally. By not doing something properly ....like records and tech management.... you can save plenty in the short term. Even produce a nice surplus. Grounded owners no doubt werent happy with that cut rate approach and it seems CASA werent either. The audits didnt come from nowhere, there was years of warnings. If they stopped the printed magazine now, that members somehow saw as a “free” entitlement, the business would be close to or in the black.
  13. Cant involve international flights, bags and people cant be booked on at regional centres as far as I know Bags have to be rechecked and scanned in international point of departure. Theres politics in this too, smaller carriers are arguing against it as it isnt required for smaller aircraft like Saab but is required for Q300 and above. Qantas, running larger types, push for it for everyone and it makes smaller airlines task a little harder and more expensive.
  14. So what are the facts? Shouldnt be secret? On all three topics were discussed to death here and no evidence presented. Lobbying to get a major proposal through.......expected Id have thought or a vocal minoroty would have sunk the proposal. Called conviction in your ideas. Jabiru, the problem is Jabiru hanging customers out to dry and CASA treatment of the problem. Whats the RAA got to do with commercial training? Lost opportunity at best.
  15. I know an owner of the ipad/Levil setup who isn’t very happy Not sure of details
  16. Im not seeing the secrecy etc accused here, any question ive askd has been clearly answered with reasoning Theres no medical reform for RAA, plenty of things might happen or are stories amd rumour, but its largely driven directly from CASA. If you think we can argue or push back you’re deluded. We ALL fly at their pleasure (or not) Maybe the organisation has changed by the makeup of the members. Sad for some for sure but the long time members carry the same weight and pay same fees as the others and theres thankfully lots of the new breed or bills wouldnt be paid. Maybe RAA is doing what members want, just not the small group that comment here. The plastic type airframes are those probably most now learned to fly in. Plenty have no interest in older types no doubt to their detriment. Id suggest few build anymore and as LSA grows less and less service thier own either. Change isnt good for everyone but it progresses with or without you.
  17. If the old AUF hadnt changed and adapted it would be long gone. Im not trying to challenge ideas but the instances of change in RAA dont seem to be a big deal. L1 online test..... not that difficult and not automatically granting maintenance to everyone untested was never going to last. Sure theres plenty who have skills and experience beyond it, just tick the box and move on.
  18. Where are RAA requirements above CASA ones?
  19. I believe its like $180K out of $200K loss per year Info is old so may be different now
  20. The largest portion of reserves being spent is on keeping paper magazine alive.........100% what members demanded.
  21. Yes they are They are doing interesting stuff with transponders and adsb
  22. Just went through a Microair repair process, bit slow but got done. They arent really interested in the radio business anymore it seems Heard good things about Trig.
  23. Almost all 2200 are older types, only a few Gen 4 exist and they have very low hours. This will be the case for some years to come. Id doubt many of the latest version have been taken apart by anyone other than Jabiru at this stage. Its a regular complaint that Jabiru conduct final R&D in customers airframes. Although some parts are shared plenty are not or are at least involve major changes. thread was started almost 3 years before Gen 4 was released and there isnt defined change dates in Jabiru engines anyway. Not sure how much "fog" can be avoided, people just need to be clear what engine they are talking about.
  24. Been said before but the paper magazine costs around that much per year and members demanded it stay. Mainly as some think its hard to read on a screen.
  25. Jabiru have raised recommended pressures over time
