boingk Posted June 27, 2012 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Looking good guys, and glad to see an interest in the non-pilotable planes out there :) I've been model flying for around 18 months now and love it - always wanted to do it as a kid but it was out of reach for the average family then so I stuck to paper planes and balsa models. Now I've got a fleet of kit and self-built aircraft and I absolutely love them! Scratchbuilt 32" flying wing: Electric-assist glider (sans equipment): Scratchbuilt 18" micro flying wing Foamboard pusher-prop jet: There are others in the fleet but these are the favourites at the moment. I do have nitro models as well as electric but at the moment I'm still perfecting them - my flagship 5ft .46-powered Stick got a bad receiver pack battery and ploughed in recently so its having a rebuild, and my Cox .049 engines are still awaiting a nice enough home to fly in again. boingk Posted June 29, 2012 Share Posted June 29, 2012 Louis - my advice would be to head to the local aeromodelling field and enquire about membership. My club asks for $120 or so a year and that includes all insurance etc and access to the field and clubhouse with your own keys. You can learn to fly via a 'buddybox' system, where senior members will take off for you and get it up to height and flying level, then 'hand over' control to you via a switch (you both have control sets). You fly around until you encounter difficulty, then the senior member takes control back and sets you up again, usually with a bit of an explanation as to what went wrong. Its much like the learning process in a real aeroplane. As an aside, if you're looking at getting into it then I would recommend checking out rcgroups.com and looking in the Classifieds under the Australian subforum. You'll ideally want a used Spektrum DX7 or DX6 control set, which are great for learning on and later also. Receivers are $6 a pop from hobbyking.com and models can be as simple as a flat expanse of foamboard ($10/sq. meter) with a few servos and a motor attached. Span 1040mm, foamy, electric 1650mah 3 cell Li-Po. Has Retracts and yes that 4 blader is the flying prop. Each year a group of rc jet modellers hire out the old Hazleton Airlines Facility and operate off the private runway to run our jets in a laid back fashon. There are also jet meets on in every state throughout the year including one at temora. There are heaps of great photos taken from Australian RC meets here Event Reports & Gallery | Parramatta Radio Control Aircraft Club Inc. This nice Hawk isn't mine but is fitted with a smoke pump and is a great example of a scale rc jet This pitts was also at cudal rc jet meet and was flown by talented RC pilot and full size Aerobatics pilot Paul Bennet Also at the same event a nearby fellow flew this tasty thruster in, something for everyone.. Turns out it took me until nearly Xmas to finish this. The ARF from Peak Models was not a good one. Lots of work to make it into something decent. Replaced some oily wood, new controls , hinges , fitted a new radial mount, new Fox.35 and recovered with tissue. The Gee Bee style paint job turned out O.K. Is it your first chopper or have you had a few to compare? I have flown quite a few of the little Contra rotating choppers over the years until recently when I got myself a Dick Smith $89 fixed pitch chopper (cyclic control but uses electric motor for altitude) a few months ago and have flown the axxe of it and am ready for something with a bit more performance (and collective)... This cheap little chopper is so much fun and was a great challenge to learn to hover, nose in and out, and then transition to circuits... in calm wind only. I seem to have it tamed now. Its a big jump up from a fixed pitch helo. Penetrates the wind a lot better, but isn't self levelling, so those thumbs are busy. I bought a Solo Pro 2 with transmitter for around $45 posted from HK a year or so ago. You might find a good second heli there for a reasonable price.
