Meet Our Local RV's

We have quite a few RV's in this South Coastal region of WA. Most were built here. At least 50% of owners are also formation endorsed. We have a strong SAAA chapter here (#13). The 1st 10 aircraft are shown below.

I went to denmark WA a few years ago to a fly in. It was practically an RV benefit and I believe denmark has the highest concentration of RVs per head of population than anywhere else.

On a location basis that's probably true. Actually Chapter 13 SAAA is Albany + Denmark + lots of other places in the Great Southern and Western South Coast. Besides the 10 RV's that I've already posted, there are another 14 to come so I'll tack a few onto this reply. (7). Building has slowed down here as we've all aged and the original enthusiasm of the late 90's has burnt out. You can see our formation group of 2005 is now much different - far less t/w RV6's and more 7A and 9A models. Esperance has a lot more building activity these days with about 6 RV's based down there now. Their only problem is that there's no formation rated instructors available there atm. happy days,

I am surprised that there are so many nosewheel A aeroplanes.

Better resale value for 1. Better crosswind ability for 2. easier to fly for 3.

Where's the 10 ?

Do you mean an RV-10? Or, can't you locate 10 RV's in the initial post?

The original RV-10 built here went to Kununurra, was onsold to another Ord resident, and is still there. An RV-10 has just been completed here by an ex Cathay Captain, and is currently in Jandakot. Another RV-10 is under way here in Albany by one of our local RV6 owner/builders....he's a glutton for punishment! I did some of the test flying on the first RV-10 and it was a rocket! 175KTAS no worries! 260HP + CSU = action! happy days,

Van also doesn't recommend engines bigger than 160HP in the -9 either, yet many have installed O-360's, and I've got an O-340 (165HP, for now...)That's why they call it experimental!

Actually, the -10 is recommended with either a 210 HP IO-360, or the 260 HP version of the IO-540 Lycoming. Both the -10s built here have IO-540 installed.

 

The main limitation that comes up on the VANS info is the HP for an RV9 or RV9A. VANS say max 160HP, but many builders have used 180HP. In the US, everyone based in the 'high' states uses 180HP. You just need to remember that the Va for an RV9/9A is much lower than for other RV's - around 110 is what they say, but my calculations say it's closer to 98-100....based on the calculation of 2V3.8 x Vs (50). I take a lot of care when negotiating around wx as it's just so easy to allow your speed to increase in an RV.

Don't forget there are at least 9 Rv's at YBUN !!! with some more under construction ... something about them, they are like a..holes everybody has one! LOL

I read that the RV9 is an easier aircraft to operate...does the lower specifications (and I presume strength) equate to an easier build?

I've just finished building my RV-9 and she'll be going to the airport in a few weeks. The build process was both fun, and a little challenging in a couple of areas, mostly where I deviated from the plans slightly.

 

If you liked Lego or Meccano as a kid, you will have no problem whatsoever with the modern RV's. The RV-3,4 and 6 aren't "matched-hole" kits, but the -7 and -9 are essentially identical bar the wing.

 

If you can afford an RV, and have a tolerant wife, odds are you'll be able to finish it, they are not difficult kits at all.

Actually takes a little longer to build the wings because they are longer and have 12% more surface area, larger flaps too. Rest is the same as a 7A. Longer wings = more hangar space needed too. IMHO, the 9A is nicer to fly than any of the short-wings. It has a lower Vs and Vso - so you could say it's safer. However, it is slower than the 7A because of the increased drag - not that you'd really notice it with an RV....they are plenty fast enough anyway. happy days,

Just a PS to my post above. If I was building again I'd still go for the 9A, but I'd look carefully at a low compression engine that would handle premium ULP. I believe there's one which gives about 165-170 HP....which would be perfect. happy days,

Hey Guys

 

Glad to see there is a good amount of RV activity in WA.

 

I have built and now flying my 6 for almost a year (65hrs). looking forward to catching up with all the RV flyers out there. I have a hangar north of Perth @ Bindoon.

 

Is there a forum or facebook page you guys normally communicate on to go for a hamburger run and fly-in on weekends? Would be great to have a reason to go flying every weekend :)
