Anyone flying into Wings over Illawarra, this year you have to register your aircraft so that you will be emailed a ticket. Your passengers will have to pay to get in. If you don't register & your flying in you will have to pay as well. All this info is on there web. I guess they have realised how much more revenue will be made in doing this.

  • 3 weeks later...

I was going to fly in but with 30 knot westerlies and the east west runway closed it may be a challenge !!

Just got back early from WINDS over ILLAWARRA.

I knew the forcast was not good, but still went as i'd already bought my ticket on line.

On arrival I saw Cherokee appear to make two attempts to land in the gusty conditions, but then obviously decided against it and headed back home.

The winds were merciless, and other than the RAAF boys arriving in the two FA18's, plus my camera dying, after 4 1/2hrs I gave it away and headed for home as thats all the flying that I saw.

They did announce that The Roulettes would probably still get airborne about 3pm but I wasn't prepared to wait any longer.

Hopefully the wind abated enough a bit later on to allow some flying.

Whilst there were reports of up to 35 knot croswinds, the FA18 pilot said they were hit with 50 knots near the mountain on their second circuit, so it was better to stay on the ground.

I was there in the afternoon, hanging out with my mates at World Flight, and MAF… the wind was incredible!!

Got to see some very daring and impressive take off's towards the end of the day… The Super Decathlon that took off was half impressive, half madman!

Most of the departing GA planes would have exceeded their cross wind component by about 3 times! It was very windy!

Pretty good turn out though, had a good look around the static displays, the F111 was great to look at up nice and close.

Had to drive home through Robertson due to car accident at Gerringong near the Kiama bends closing the road both ways, which was actually a fatal sadly.

The Flying Pig!

Sorry I missed you Tomo, it would have been good to catch up.

I spent some time at the MAF site and thought Tomo needs the tail of of this kite before he can put it on his avaitar and fly it home safely, or to PNG 096_tongue_in_cheek.gif.d94cd15a1277d7bcd941bb5f4b93139c.gif .

Hope to catch up with you next time mate.

Kind regards

Planey

the Roulettes did not get up. the Sabre did a few passes, then the F-18's took off, one did some nice displays and the other one just disappeared. The one doing the displays didn't even land, I think they both just went home. Once that happened, the entire audience population hit the gates en masse. it was a nice day out, but a bit of a bust as far as any flying displays go. I was really looking forward to seeing Matt Hall's routine too~!

runway 08/26 was shut down by casa. the 26 end of the strip is a bit flat and pools water after rain,,, CASA werent happy about that, so ordered the strip to be shut down until its fixed. sadly the council dont have the cash at the moment to fix it.
