I did a quick survey of selected forum members and 100% of them said they would also choose the beer. Perhaps an official poll is needed to see if Darren really does have anyone who would choose to take him in preference to the refreshments. Also there will be the normal coffee/tea and biscuits at the Recreational Flying tent all the time and available to Forum Members to sit back and have a cuppa We have a double site - I was expecting to have an aircraft there but that was not to be - but we will have two tents (1 for the shop and 1 for forum members), tables and chairs, umbrellas to sit under - all available to forum members. Guest airsick Posted March 17, 2008 Share Posted March 17, 2008 I would think you're ok with the generator Ian. If you have 2300W maximum then this will allow you a 500W margin. Just had a quick look at my adapter and it draws 1.5A so that is roughly 360W (ignoring power factor problems) so I can't see you going over the maximum and you're only going over the continuous rating by a little bit. There might be a trough passing over the ACT/Goulburn area on Thursday when I plan to fly, so might have to delay by 24hrs and get a nice tailwind all the way from Goulburn to Narromine. If you're 1800 watt urn is set on low, then chances are that it would only use 900 watts or less on that setting. I take my coffee white with 2 sugars, I take my tea white with no sugars. wanabigaplane Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 Urns and gensets. It aint that simple. Lets look at what really happens. An urn is a very simple device. If the water is below a certain temperature, the thermostat cuts in, and 1800 watts is delivered into the element, and the generator chugs away at the 90% load. Theoretically, there is enough power left to drive a few lights, laptops, and mobile phones. When the water is at full temperature, the thermostat cuts out, and the generator sees no load at all. A few lights, laptops, and mobile phones mean nothing at all. There is no in between. If you turn down the thermostat, all you do is adjust the temperature at which the changeover occurs. It does not change the load on the generator during the on period, or the load during the off period. BUT - lets look at what happens when the generator has been purring along happily with almost no load, then suddenly, out of the blue, the thermostat cuts in, and introduces a 90% load. That's a staggering change. Firstly the contacts in the thermostat spark and arc high voltage spikes all through your delicate electronic equipment like lightning at the end of your street. The voltage regulator cannot handle the step input, and the motor may alternately almost stop and then over rev with subsequent high and low mains voltages which would strain any power supply designed for a nice even 240 volts. Your computer gear may survive it, and it may not ! Going from 90% load to no load, or vice versa is very risky indeed! So what to do? The traditional solution is to only partly load the generator with something that switches on and off, plus a load that that stays on all the time. Like a 600 watt jug for heating water, and a 600 watt light (great for camping out). Another solution is to operate the urn, and your electronic equipment at different times. And another solution is to use the 12v battery charger output most generators have to charge a car battery, and run a 240 volt inverter from the battery. Yes, yes. Last year they ran out on the Saturday night. I asked the owner and he said, "I told my wife we was gonna run out" Can end up a bit expensive but as mentioned all for a good cause. I am hoping that I can get out of Sydney with Ross so we can fly there but getting out of Sydney Friday is looking a bit touch and go. Driving with the family as far as wellington, where I can drop them off and head out to natfy by myself. What I'm not sure about is whether or not it will be a friday arve and sat, or just the sat.
