It's a very lightweight stickyback aluminium coated foam to help reduce drumming on the flat panels. i have used a lightweight fibreglass stuff quilted between some other stuff to do the cockpit as it's more flame resistant. It has made significant improvement. I still get drumming from the horizontal stab and wings because I'm not de-riveting to install insulation and wind noise is still the loudest thing. I'd have to build a less draggy airframe to fix that.
Geoff13 Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Take your hearing aids out :) But seriously I turn my hearing aids right down and use EQ1 Noise Cancelling Headset. In my case it is a case of having enough noise to hear the engine. I hope to hear a problem before the gauges can tell me that I have one.
kgwilson Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I insulated the entire fuselage including the firewall, top, sides & floor to the back of the baggage area behind me with that lightweight closed cell foam which has aluminium foil on one side. Of course I couldn't do anything about the bubble canopy other than good sealing. Then I put in some lightweight carpet & upholstery in the cockpit I got from Spotlight. I only have Rec Flying basic PNR headsets and don't have any problem with noise at all. I can hear the engine note and can detect any irregularity which is good. After a 3 hour flight I still feel fine. All I need is a pee.

Kyle Communications Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Mick some gliders are even worse..we have a couple of self launching ones at YCAB....man are they angry bees
facthunter Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Without an engine (in a glider), you can hear all the airframe noises. Creaks and groans and cables flapping. In the early Cessnas and Cherokees you had a speaker and hand held mike. They must have had adequate sound deadening then. Nev

Yenn Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Those old Cessnas which didn't have modern radio had sound deadening, maybe. I flew them for twenty years without headphones and now I have deafness. We could hear the loudspeaker OK, but I doubt I would hear it now and certainly wouldn't try. 1
