onetrack Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Fancying a trip to Honolulu to meet some Wahines, Brendan? Just remember, a ticket on a cross-world jaunt on a Clipper, cost the equivalent of $35,000! The Pan Am facilities such as the Hotels on Midway and Wake didn't fare too well, thanks to the Japanese invasion. Neither did the people Pan Am left behind. 😞 https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/pan-american-airways-on-the-wwii-home-front-in-the-pacific.htm 3

I thought there was some great footage of them. Why would you come to the conclusion above. ? Edited June 4 by BrendAn 1

onetrack Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Nah, keep posting, don't get upset, I was just having a shot at you. I like the vintage films, too - it's amazing to see the conditions on the Clipper, as compared to todays sardine cans. 1
planedriver Posted June 5 Posted June 5 (edited) That was interesting Brendan. Thanks for posting that. Flabergasted that a giant aeroplane weighing 42 tons made those trips. What would they think of todays aircraft weighing 10 times that and travelling at todays speeds? They'd no doubt think we were bull sh*tting. Such is the progress of time. Bet they never got a plastic cup of coke and a few pretzels for inflight munchies.. Edited June 5 by planedriver Spelling mistake 2
johnm Posted June 5 Posted June 5 yes ......... interesting to see the delicious cigarettes @ 10.24 ................ while having dinner 2 1
planedriver Posted Friday at 09:43 AM Posted Friday at 09:43 AM Reminds me of flights to London where all the smokers once jockied to take turns in the back 2 rows of a 747 for a smoke, then coughed their guts up like me, 😜 while returning to assigned seats. 1

skippydiesel Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago No mention of the susceptibility of unpressurised aircraft to adverse weather. In particular the discomfort of passengers in the air and delayed on the ground. Might have been omitted for the film but saw no effort to meet W & B😈 1
facthunter Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago How would you know W&B weren't addressed? Let me assure you that it certainly would be. Nev 1

facthunter Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago I still dream I'm smoking. I went absolutely Cold Turkey about 35 years ago. The only way. You have to really WANT to. Nev 1 1 1
Jabiru7252 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago I wonder if passengers went crazy and got into punch ups during flights back then like they do nowadays. Probably not as back then only 'cultured, educated' folks could afford to fly. These days any bogan in bare feet and a smelly singlet can fly. 😞 2 1

Nev Unfortunately, in July 1949, W&B was NOT properly addressed in the case of MMA DC-3 VH-MME, and it stalled immediately after takeoff, and it crashed almost vertically into the ground, killing all 18 on board. This was one of Australia's worst air disasters in that era, only exceeded by the crash of the ANA DC-4 Amana in the following year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1949_MacRobertson_Miller_Aviation_DC-3_crash 2
facthunter Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago It's very much a requirement built into the regulations. Pan Am were a big outfit, run well. Read the entire Wikipedia article . The Cause was never determined . MMA nearly lost their AOC. There were Many deficiencies in their OPS. including BAD Instrument Maintenance. Nev
