  1. Amber Christine Arndell was just 13 when a light plane crashed into the ferris wheel set up next to an airstrip on the mid-north coast

A young woman who was on a ferris wheel when it was struck by a light plane has been awarded $1.5m in damages by a New South Wales court which heard she was “unemployable” almost 10 years after the traumatic event.

Amber Christine Arndell, then 13, and her brother were riding the 20 metre-high amusement at the annual Old Bar Beach festival near Taree in October 2011 when a two-seat light plane took off at an adjacent airstrip.

The aircraft attempted a landing before taking off again, veering left into the ferris wheel.

The NSW supreme court this week found MidCoast Council and pilot Paul Clarendon Cox negligent for breaching their care to the woman.

“[Arndell’s] evidence makes clear she was frightened the ferris wheel was going to collapse and/or the fuel from the plane would ignite – and that she and her brother would die,” Justice Stephen Rothman said this week.

Cox was ordered to cover 35% of the $1.5m in damages.

He failed in his lawsuit against the council despite the court accepting the pilot had suffered insomnia, flashbacks and other mental harm due to the crash. His landing attempt that turned into touch-and-go “displayed a lack of due care and diligence”, the judge said.

The court heard a council officer had examined the ferris wheel after it was erected and raised no issues with its placement. That was despite it intruding into the splay – a three-dimensional area meant to remain clear to allow aircraft to land and take off.

Two medical experts agreed Arndell’s experience of the collision was traumatic and had significant effects but were split on whether the trauma had been resolved and what effect earlier, traumatic events had on her recognised psychiatric illness.

The court heard the woman had ridden on another ferris wheel after the crash. She testified that occurred under pressure from her grandparents to face her problems and she was shaking and in tears during it.

Arndell was unable to attend fairgrounds and ride on a ferris wheel again until 2017 when accompanied by her partner.

The judge concluded she had a pre-existing psychological vulnerability, went through a period of decompensation and developed a generalised anxiety disorder and a major depressive disorder.

“The overwhelming cause of the plaintiff’s incapacity is the trauma associated with the collision,” he said.

Her school reports had spoken of a hard-working and confident student until late 2011 and it wasn’t unreasonable to expect that Arndell would have completed high school and worked in the fashion industry, the judge said.

The collision had made that an “impossible task” and – while not fully restricting her enjoyment of life outside work – it was “clear that for all practical purposes the plaintiff is unemployable,” the judge said.

Arndell, now 23, was awarded slightly under $1.1m for lost wages. Her non-economic loss was deemed to be worthy of a $412,200 payment.

  2. Hi All, yesterday I started a Page/Database of aircraft accidents and posted 3 to start with, however, I feel a bit iffy about doing them this way. The objective is to create a learning tool to help keep everyone safer and hopefully improve one's flying skills through interactive discussion of the accident. There is a lot of work in adding each record and i don't want to limit it to just Australian accidents as there is the Accidents and Incidents Forum where you guys post these.

So, I have removed the Accidents Page/Database and have commenced talks with a very high calibre IPS software developer to create something similar to the old Aviation News section we use have but specifically for aircraft accidents from all around the world. This way we have an automated system to list accidents that can be discussed in a non-public area of the site. It will take a little while for it to be developed, and it won't be cheap, but i think it will be worth it.

For those that don't know how we did Aviation News in the past here are some screen shots of the News Reader from many years ago...I don't know at this stage if it will end being like this but it will be developed to achieve the desired objective.

  3. The site is going well, in my opinion. There are still a few things to do but I had to get the email system working properly first and then:

    1. I can start adding Flying Schools and Clubs in the Groups Section

    2. I can start adding Aircraft Manufacturers/Distributors and Agents into the Supplier System

However we now have apart from the Forums:

Groups - for all your special interest groups of users

Blogs - for you to add any aircraft builds and personalised general blogs

Events - for all aviation events when they start back up after Covid

    Media:

    - A Photo Gallery

    - A Video Library

    - Interesting articles to read

    - Aviation Movie database

    - Aviation Books database

Aircraft - a database on all the different aircraft for you to look up and use as a resource

Our Shop - our comprehensive discounted Clear Prop Pilot Supplies shop

Classifieds - where you can list your classifieds for free

Suppliers - a section for suppliers to the aviation industry...you guys need to populate this

    Resources:

    - Free online resources for you to use

    - Free downloads like copies of books, files and other things

    - Flying Tutorials...you guys need to populate this area with any tutorials that you can add like Maintenance etc

    - A Google Earth view on all the different Airfields that you can use and update with the info you may have

Members - all the site members, the leaders, staff and more

Off Topic - a link for everyone to use to discuss Off Topic areas of interest

So, what now? What else do you need that will make this site the overall best resource available to all pilots...I need you to tell me what else you need!!!

And don't forget to help populate all the areas of the site...thanks

  4. I have finally been able to hopefully fix the email system here on Recreational Flying and wonder whether site notifications are coming up in your Inbox or are going to your Spam folder...can you let me know if there has been any change or whether you are still getting emails from the site in your Spam folder...thanks

    Hi Ian,

Bit of a strange one, I just uploaded a photo in my "Marty_d's CH-701 build log" thread, and it comes out rotated 180 degrees (so upside down).

It's the right way up in my folder on the computer.

Any ideas?  Tried to edit the post but there's no way, as far as I can see, to rotate images.

    Cheers, Marty

    Fixed

  6. Another assumption I made is that with what you are saying in the thread "has recreational aviation collapsed" in that the sector is doing a roaring business still with flying schools flat out then why doesn't this site get new registered users? Years ago we use to get many each week and now lucky to get 1 a week. The site is bigger and better than it ever was and moderation is not really needed any more. Is the name not of interest to all these people, people who must be doing Google searches on various recreational aviation things, is the name Aircraft Pilots more their thing now with flying these plastic fantastics and they call themselves "a Pilot"? if the industry is in better shape than it ever was than has this site kept up with the changes in the mindset of the recreational pilot. Just a thought brought about by that other thread!

  7. Thanks @yampy my assumption is that commercial pilots i.e. Airline pilots, would not bother with a site like this, the old Ultralight industry has moved to plastic fantastics (pseudo GA) and that combined with the PPL "recreational" numbers combined would far outweigh that of commercial also providing a barrier to Airline Pilots. But, on the bright side is those few Airline Pilots that still get the buzz from flying GA may come on here not to talk about Airlines but to talk about fun flying which could also help with valuable input to discussions for everyone...Look at @facthunter as an example

That was my line of thought, perhaps it is wrong or just simply naive, definitely worth a discussion

  8. Hi all, lately I have been thinking about the site's audience and the site name has come to mind. The site has a lot to offer and not just to the sport aircraft segment of aviation. Whilst the term Recreational also refers to PPL etc, many recreational pilots still consider the site to be targeted to just the old "Ultralight" fraternity and not all other forms of recreational flying.

Funny as when the site first started it was called Ultralight.com.au and after a while the times changed and the site was renamed to Recreational Flying.

But again I see myself thinking that times have changed and to be more appealing, not only to Google search, but to the greater aviation community that the site name be changed to Aircraft Pilots (.com). This I believe would cover ALL segments of "Recreational" including PPL. Yes I know the site's name of Recreational Flying has a known brand however this may well be both a positive and negative.

Do you have any strong objections to renaming the site to Aircraft Pilots (.com)...your input is important

  9. The Recreational Flying Classifieds are back and they are FREE for you to list anything that you have for sale. Do you have an aircraft you wish to sell or some aircraft parts, pilot equipment or anything in aviation that you no longer need, well convert it to cash through the Classifieds System here on Recreational Flying, IT'S FREE TO LIST YOUR ITEM, or you can select the Featured option for only $10 which goes towards the cost of running the site.

  10. Granted we have been in a pandemic this year however has the writing been on the wall for recreational aviation for some time now and the pandemic has just been another nail in the coffin? Years ago we had many different aircraft avialable to buy and now there is only a handful of distributors and those are mostly plastic fantastics. The number of flying schools seems to have decreased and the costs have dramatically increased. Has this all come about since RAAus became a business and thus the demise of the Association of members, the social aspects of recreational aviation.

Or, is it thriving and the pandemic has allowed it to thrive in bubbles ready to break back out.

What do you think...is recreational aviation declining or thriving and if so why?

  11. Hi to all
I wanted to post to keep you informed on how the site is going. Basically I think the features, the functionality and even the way the site looks is absolutely great and it is exciting for me as I know how much more is coming. Yes, I have tormented you by going back and forth with software solutions and for that I am truly sorry but both solutions have their pros and cons but overall now I can see what we have is the best solution for the future.

There are a lot more FREE resources, Downloads and Tutorials to come, we have free books and manuals to download, great online calculators and tools and comprehensive educational tutorials all FREE for everyone to use. We have weekly competitions running where users can win prizes and soon we will have a weekly Clear Prop special. Also coming soon are Aviation Articles, News, Classifieds, Educational Quizzes, Airfields Directory and much more all helping to make Recreational Flying (.com) an extensive and powerful online resource for all aviators.

What we all need to do now is to get as many more people to come on in and start using the site and that is where I need your help. Not only in letting people know about everything the site has but also to populate 2 very important sections of the site; Groups and Suppliers.

For Groups I would like to get every aviation club and school to have their own presence here on Recreational Flying by them creating their own Group, a mini website itself with heaps of features, where they can promote their club/school to all users of the site, not just registered users but the thousands of visitors that come to the site. I am always available to help them to create their own presence here on Recreational Flying and remember you can create your own group for any special interest as well...perhaps an aircraft type group or an engine type group etc. So please get your Club or School to create a group here.

The other powerful area that needs your help is the Suppliers Section. This new section has a vast range of features to help suppliers promote their products and services in the aviation arena. i would like to see all aircraft manufacturers, distributors, agents etc along with all the different suppliers of everything we aviators need listed in the Suppliers Section to help all Recreational Flying users visiting this great resource...but I need your help to do it. If you know any Aircraft Distributor or Supplier please klet them know they can get a presence here on Recreational Flying and its FREE or to help the site they can get many extra features for a small monthly contribution to the site.

Please help me to help you in making Recreational Flying (.com) the best resource on the internet for every fellow aviator.

How do you post a short length video (about 1 minute) recorded on an android phone onto the site?

Try and use the normal attachment process in a post...like adding an image to a post except select your video...let's see how that goes

  13. The recomendation is to upload it to YouTube and then add the YouTube link to your post or add it to the Video Section which enables you to add it wherever you like.

I can turn on the ability to upload it directly to here but the storage and hosting costs would increase dramatically and the CDN (Content Distribution Network) cache is limited to a 100mb. If I do enable video upload then I may see enormous video uploads being made...the thing is do I risk it???????????????????????

I used to work at Coles Myer at their Tooronga head office in Melb (nicknamed the "Tooronga Zoo")

I worked for Coles/Myer around 2000 in charge of their GST Implementation Program...I was working out of one of their "Little Shop" areas (if you what they are) in Lonsdale St.

  15. Videos I have seen of helicopters pulling high tension power cables have done so with the chopper remaining vertical so if the cable snapped and flung back it would just go somewhat horizontal and not into the blades...in this video the chopper is angled over pulling straight thus if the cable snapped it could fling straight into the blades

Admin, for some reason your last few postings including this one have titles and typed text (where there is some) but nothing else: no link or video.

I'm running Firefox on a Windows laptop in NZ. I've disabled my adblocker, but no ceegar. Suggestions???

Rebooted machine, still no ceegar. All else working fine: news sites/email/world stats etc.

Sometimes content is blocked due to location, but there is usually a msg spelling that out. I'm seeing no content at all, apart from typed text.

    Checking:

OMEs post on the Magnus effect brings up video content okay.

    Hm...

Hi Bob, I have just added the link to the video to the opening post
