Ian,  Just wondering if a category for "Aircraft" is a possibility.  I have a number of books dedicated to one particular marque eg DC-3, Lancs, or a particular type eg Bushplanes, or era EAA 1932, or locality.  These are usually devoid of personal stories but full of specifications, photos, lists etc.

Give me to late today and I will create that extra Category for you.

If the ISBN doesn't come up search Google Books for the title and get the ISBN from that as the code looks up the ISBN in Google Books to get the info to populate the fields.

  2. Finally, @FlyingVizsla and everyone else, we now have an Aviation Book section for you to list and view many different books of all kinds related to aviation. It is up to you to populate this new section with all the different books that you may have...all you need to do is enter the ISBN number and if it is listed in Google Books all the information about the book will automatically complete all the fields for you...easy to add your books into the new Aviation Books section.

Note, if the ISBN number doesn't automatically populate the fields when adding a book, simply look the book up in Google Books and get the ISBN number from there

Please populate this new section for everyone to benefit from what you have and know...thanks

  3. The Aviation Movie and TV Shows database has been added to the site as a great resource for users to look up and use. Each Movie/Show that is entered looks up the TMDb database and completes all the fields automatically for you. It contains the Stars, the Crew, any Trailers, Images and even lists other similar movies for you. If you click on a cast or crew member a popup window appears with the cast member's bio and other movies they have been in...this is a very powerful resource for everyone.

Please, ADD all the Aviation related Movies and TV Shows yourself into the Movies database section for other users to know about and create interesting discussions on the Movie/TV Show for everyone to join in.

Wondering what to watch this weekend? Check out the Movies/TV Shows database right here on Recreational Flying so you can go out and get the DVD...what a great resource for ALL members of Recreational Flying (.com)

(Aviation Books Section is coming soon)

  4. Ok so with only 14 member votes and 3 family votes the fly out box of menu links is the preferred option. I will need to get @Ahmed Zayed to see if this can be developed with the current framework or not. basically it needs to have the sub menu items in a fly out box similar to that of the Account, Notifications and Messages box and then when on one of those sub menu items the same sub menu items are displayed in the sticky sub menu bar across the top.

Just to be clear it will be a box that comes out from the main menu item (ignore the cosmetics as the image is from another site):

  5. You will see in the new Videos Section that you can watch the full episodes of the television series Mayday: Air Crash Investigation. This series is of great benefit in terms of perhaps we can learn something that may help to keep us, and our passenger(s) safer in our flying activities. At this stage I am adding one episode, in their original release order, per day to the Videos Section. If you want them ALL added at once then let me know.

I hope you find the episodes not only entertaining but also interesting and helpful.

  6. WOW, the new Video Section is up and running, ready for you to add ALL your favourite aviation videos for everyone to watch, add their comments, likes and more. You can see the latest videos that have been added, the weekly trending videos, follow videos and more. You can quickly add a video from YouTube or from one of the other popular video hosting sites and the system will automatically get the video's name and image.

ALSO, if you add a video to a forum post you can quickly add it to the Videos Section by clicking the "Post To Videos" at the bottom of your post...easy

Go ahead, populate the new Videos section for everyone to see and enjoy

  7. I have completed the Groups Section and migrated the Groups from the old software...I am sure you will see how good the Groups Section is here at Recreational Flying (.com) so

join in, have fun and see what you can create by having your very own Group for your Flying Club, School or special interest Group.

    You can make your Group:

    • Public: Everyone can see the group and its posts, and can participate without joining.
    • Open: Everyone can see the group and its posts, but only members can participate. Everyone can join.
    • Closed: Everyone can see the group and who's in it, but only members can see posts and participate. Users need to ask a leader to join.
    • Private: Only members can find the group and see its posts. Users need to be invited by a leader to join.
    • Read Only: Everyone can see the group and its posts, but only members can participate. Users need to be invited by a leader to join.

AND, if you want to, you can even choose to have PAID Membership where others pay you a membership fee to join your group...Great for Flying Clubs who have paid memberships

In fact, you can create your very own web site using all the features that the Recreational Flying web site offers...including your own Forums, Gallery, File Downloads, Event Calendar, Custom Side Blocks and more...you can even add extra web pages like a Home Page, Contact Us page etc all within your group to create an entire web site for yourself or your Flying Club or School.

Please, create a presence for your Flying Club or School right here at Recreational Flying and if you already have a basic web site or want to set up forums etc then attached are some images that you may, if you want to, use on your site with a link to your own Group, or ask me if you want another image created specifically for you.

  9. Airspace Incursions – Sunshine Coast

Members are reminded of the importance of thorough pre-flight planning and regularly updating aeronautical charts prior to flight. RAAus receives a large number of airspace incursion occurrences which are reported from members as well as Airservices Australia.

In particular, pilots operating in the Sunshine Coast region should pay particular attention to airspace due to complex airspace and recent changes resulting in a high number of airspace violations.

Pilots should also ensure they are visually confirming position when operating, as a number of occurrences have occurred due to small discrepancies in GPS/EFB location incorrectly indicating to pilots that they are clear of controlled airspace.

  10. Now that I have your attention (sorry) but the site is coming to a huge problem and I need your input. We need to plan for the future.

The current side menu system is great but it takes up side space causing some pages to display squashed up horizontally PLUS it only has room for one more item...BUT there is a lot more to come.

What we have and what is coming:

    1. Forums
    2. Groups/Clubs
    3. Blogs
    4. Events
    5. Gallery
    6. Videos
    7. Movies
    8. Books
    9. News
    10. Articles
    11. Our Shop (replacing Clear Prop)
    12. Classifieds
    13. Suppliers (Business Directory)
    14. Product Reviews
    15. Downloads
    16. Quizzes
    17. Tutorials
    18. Airfields
    19. Great Aviators
    20. Reference Items
    21. Aircraft
    22. Members
    23. Member Map
    24. Support

Now that is only what is currently planned and NOT other features that we, the users, may find that they would like to have here on Recreational Flying as their all encompassing recreational aviation resource

    There are 3 options:

    1. OPTION 1: Keep the side menu and group some areas together with a landing page. This means that when you click on a grouped link, there is a Home page with snippets of entries for each section within that group. Once you are on the Group Home Page or in any section within that Group, the sub menu across the top will contain links to each section within that group. Negative is more clicks needed to get to where you want to go and we still have some horizontally squashed views. Possible benefit is a Group Summary Page of all the sections in that group.
    2. OPTION 2: Keep the side menu and group some areas together. When you click on a menu item in the main side menu, a sub menu box comes out with each of the sections in that group for you to click on (like the current Notification, PMs and Account boxes are displayed). Once you are on a section in that Group, or in any section within that Group, the sub menu across the top will contain links to each section within that group. Negative is more clicks needed to get to where you want to go and we still have some horizontally squashed views. Benefit is there is extra room to extend the section list in a group even further than planned
    3. OPTION 3: Move to a standard Horizontal menu and group the relevant sections with links to them in the sub menu. Negative is that you don't have a side menu that is easy to use on a tablet without your hand leaving the side of the tablet and space is taken up across the top of the page for an extra menu line. Benefit is we no longer have the horizontally squashed view on some pages and there is extra room to extend the section list in a group even further than planned:

Please vote to let me know your preference...thanks

The one thing I am concerned with is OUT OF SITE OUT OF MIND when this site will offer so much

Looking good. Suggestion  -default view  to be CONDENSED not EXPANDED.

    great stuff,

Both the Whats New (Unread) and Whats New (All) are defaulted to Condensed...the site remembers what your last view was, whether it was Condensed or Expanded though
