  1. I dont find "out of date EKP maps" to be a problem. Places rarely move or appear/disappear. Although some of the aviation data might get dated. I did note a substantial town in Victoria (Yea) wasn't on the map, an email to AVmap fixed that somewhat later. I update my Jeppensen map from the AVmap/it. website every 2 or 3 years...Not difficult, a card reader is cheap
  2. I suppose a cranked wing with trousered u/c is out of the question........like those Corsair blokes have....
  3. Does that include the double valve spring new valve/valve guide mod that was just issued?
  4. Never have I thought that they (Jab's) are rubbish, The engine has great promise, (especially the six, light and powerful. ) BUT they are fraught with design problems that have caused unreliability. Overheating , I believe is at the bottom of most of the problems, That , and uneven mixture distribution. (plus dump the hydraulic tappets and the stupid almost generator.) If I remove my 0-200 and fit a 70 pound lighter engine, reliable engine, I will be very happy. Quote From Yenn................."Will that solve all the problems CASA and the whingers have been going on about?" Yup, I believe it will......You just gotta be willing to think about it... I can deal with complexity, and the jabiru engine is not complex
  5. I understand, But should the instrument be lifted then Jabiru (engines) will probably carry on and do exactly nothing...... Better no Jabiru engines than unreliable Jabiru engines.... Be airframe manufacturers, very good at that they are!...There are a myriad of engines available......It's a dreadful shame that the brand has gone down this road ( Head in sand , it's the maintainer's , fuel's, oil's, pilot's, anybody's fault but mine) ... Remember " the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour"......As long as CASA has their foot on Jabiru's throat we may see improvements ( as we have already seen) Instrument lifted = fast track development stops. BTW, Canada and New Zealand do not support an engine manufacturer. They cherry pick the best available as we should be doing.
  6. This particular engine was a Jabiru rebuild. Which makes the fault unforgivable. ..........................And I know it's not a problem confined to Jabiru................... Although how that mitigates the fault I can hardly imagine. Smacks a bit of "Oh they all do that" .....Double valve springs have been around for forever and a day. But why Jabiru? why now? was there an undisclosed problem with their old springs?.....Just to put people to sleep that think that I am a Jabiru knocker. I am certainly NOT. I am about to embark on an engine change for my Jodel to a Jabiru 6....."But not as we know it Jim." I plan to dry sump it, and in the space now taken up by the sump, put a inlet manifold "spider" ( as Continental. ) with an updraught carb. and w/c heads of course. That should just about take care of all the major shortcomings, 1. Too little oil. 2. Tortuous uneven inlet tract. 3. Overheating. 4. Overheating, did I add overheating?. Just for good measure a proper alternator.
  7. Well I hope the instrument is NOT lifted as I have a recent engine pulled apart where the mainbearing shells have been spinning in the c/case. Not the first one either. Not nice and Jabiru should fix it. It's an easy fix, just dowel the shells. BUT first there has to be an acceptance that there's a problem. Casa accepted it. Will Jab? Double valve springs wont do a thing.
  8. Oh So Sorry I though this thread was entitled " Conditions and direction about Jabiru engines" Go and chat about your insurance elsewhere....
  9. Dear oh Dear. I just saw a Rotax ULS advertised with 2000 hrs on it "running well" I recently sold a School Rotax with 2020 hours on it, running well........ Jabs generally get to 400 or so hours before needing overhaul or replacement .......And quite what the new bulletin specifying.......... New Valves , Caps, Double Springs, ect ASAP. is all about only CASA can tell? maybe......
  10. The EU will cry for a bit, but when Turkey joins everything will be forgotten!...
  11. Trying to take pictures of dead big end shells, came across a little gadget for my iphone, a clipon microscope lens with illumination that turns your phone into a microscope, OMG what pictures.....take picture, save and send immediately to customer, Brilliant for nine bucks!...Highly recommended.
  12. The diaphragm type of pressure sender are notoriously unreliable, especially if mounted on the engine. Personally i have a full scale mechanical gauge that reads in individual pounds 0-60. So ANY change is immediately visable. BTW I believe the faulty filter therory is just wishful thinking. AS other people have written Just fit a mechanical gauge and all will be revealed....
  13. I just read your post for the first time, and, coincedentally, I was looking at a tube joing program, it might be of interest to readers. It's called tubemiter.exe and to be found on TonyFoales website. If I can figure how to link it to here I will.
  14. do you have the Honeywell oil pressure sender with the Avia gauge? That seems to be the duck's guts as far as oil pressure goes.
  15. My "Friendly" machinist tells me that His insurer (wont say who) doesn't want the extra liability risk...
  16. The amount of oil between the recommended level and the minimum level is just too little, It's about 150ml more or less. If your engine blows out (Not Burn) ( thru' reasons we don't go into here) 50mls per hour you have a MAXIMUM flight duration of x hours. IF EVERYTHING STAYS THE SAME!.......But Wait ! There's more...........Jabiru rings are well known to stick, I can show you some. Oil consumption could likely rise over 3 hours. Maybe dramatically. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW? If the oil reserve was 1 litre I would feel so much happier. We have to have petrol reserves, Why? when you have NO oil reserves? That's Stupid! My oil tank carries 6 qts. There is hardly a condition imaginable whereby I would run out of oil before petrol. Good Luck Jab.....( the capitals are deliberate. ) A catch / return system will go a long way to making me feel better....People have written about injecting oil into the sump as you fly along Great idea , but I have a better idea, put your extra oil that you carry INTO A LARGER SUMP IN THE FIRST PLACE. . This is quite right. EXCEPT , the amount of rubbish (lead, ect ) collected in the oil (it is not filtered out, look inside your crankshaft) is then concentrated over a very, very small amount. To reduce that concentration you must carry more oil. I've seen oil come out looking like grey paint. I'd rather it looked more like oil.
  17. Sorry Nev. I'm coming down off some serious meds. My only reason to "recirculate" vented oil (seperate from air/water) is for an engine that carries an insufficient supply of oil.... Such as Jab. My friends engine vents a lot of oil and is in danger of running out of oil on a longish flight. It's not economically viable to renew the engine ( again!) So we recirculate and the catch can contains only water. .....My apologies again...............
  18. Moto Guzzi / Ducati and others have been returning (blowby ) oil to the sump for 50 or 60 years, I NEVER SAW any bad effects of this, Not any internal corrosion not any excessive wear. Not any acid damage, Not any water in the oil .....I think that some writers are considering what could have possibly happened or, what they think might happen or even what they think should happen....................... I know of one flat six engine (at least) with one on which returns oil to the rocker cover ( Look at oil/air separator A/C spruce) been working fine, fitted for the very same reason as the poster , for quite a few years now. With no ill effects. If the oil stays well below 100 C then I would not advise it. Not in an aircraft. Bloody Guzzi's who cares about them....NO manufacturer of ANY motorcycle blew oil from a breather on a chain and got the effect of a rusty chain. That is just fanciful.......They stopped blowing breather oil onto the chain because it made such a mess of the rear tyre. I have over 60 years experience with motorcycles and almost without exception the "breathers" (when they were in existence) were moved to the rear mudguard stay to drip their message onto the road beneath them. or to be blown onto the following blokes clothes. Sorry about the rant. I don't mean to critize other's posts. I have PMS.
  19. What a coincidence, My friendly skilled machinist called this morning and " Would I please come and pick up the heads and cylinders that you left ". "We can't do any more work on your Jabiru's, the Insurance will not cover us".... Bloody thanks a lot mate........Anybody know of a engine reconditioner in the S.E. Melbourne area ( of impeccable repute) that will fit valve guides and machine pistons of an aircooled 4 ? And Please, Don't mention the name.....
  20. There's not going to be a lot of wood in it is there?
  21. So here is my Jodel. Been flying it for about 10 years now. Still goes really well. Great Tail Dragger.....
  22. lot of information on it. More than the tru trak gemini (which is similar ) , but then it's dearer....... $1500 + GST. I could lose my Rate of Climb indicator, plonk this in it's place and have back up for almost everything!...
  23. But still things are found. Whilst playing deep in Epping Forest as a young bloke, My mate and I came across an obviously hidden airaid shelter in a bramble thicket. We got in and found boxes of what I now know to be Brens, Stens ammo and grenades, All wrapped in Brown greasy paper stuff. The grenades were smooth ones not pineapples. We ran away in fright, I wonder if it's still there? I could pin point it exactly...
