  1. Well, better start learning then. It does wonders for your cross-wind landing techniques, or so I'm told.
  2. Good stuff, isn't it  I've only done it once, but flying the down wind leg while a large RPT is on its takeoff roll is a top sight. Pity you have to keep your eyes on where you're going...
  3. Oh yeah, I guess I should have added part-time musician (is there any other type?) in my younger years. Had a residency at a reception house for a while. Played pretty much everything, none of it terribly well. Restricted to playing Bass at church these days - they have to be nice and let me play...
  4. Decided to be an Engineer at age 12, and 40 years later still am. Started with Electronics, moved to management and these days write software and dream of building something with wings...
  5. Funny how the kids soak it in, probably without realising. My daughter was happy to fly with me once, but really couldn't care one way or the other. She's living in England these days, but recently was on holidays in Austria and took a dual flight on a paraglider and got really excited by it. I'm looking forward to her coming back to Oz - maybe we can learn together...
  6. I like the two blokes in the lower left corner of the first photo. "I told you to watch where you're going!" "Yeah, well what about that big scrape you put down the side parking at Westfield last year?" "You always bring that up, don't you? You're just like your mother." :baldy: "Stop bringing my mother into it" :DirtDOG:
  7. Just like a good book - I didn't want to put 'em down!
  8. There's one in the member's market in the latest mag too - $1k.
  9. Whatever happened to the idea of stopping before you go too far??
  10. I must admit that I was thinking of the staff writers doing phone interviews so that there was a level of consistency from month to month, but why not get things started? Get a couple in and that might prompt others to tell us about their little bit of heaven...
  11. Got mine. I liked the changes inside (the prop on the cover looks remarkably like the advertiser's one just inside ). The un-posed photo of Mick Poole worked well, though his column could have done with some editing. In the absence of anything much to say about Natfly, I enjoyed the vignettes, particularly of the coffee lady (seeing I spent so much time in her queue...). Fresh ideas are always good. Maybe there could be a monthly focus on a particular airstrip. The bulk of the copy could be written from phone interviews with a couple of the local big wigs, with photos supplied by the same? That'd fill a few pages each month, and we'd all get to know a bit more about what was available, who was there and what kind of locality it was in.
  12. Depends on how knowledgeable the audience is. On the flight down to Natfly, my landing at Temora was pretty ordinary, so I was a bit surprised when my wife commented "gee, that was a good one". (This is all the more surprising because she'd be happy to go flying any day if only she didn't have to land... ). Anyhow, on the return home I pulled off the absolutely best crosswind landing of my short flying career. Beautifully controlled, single wheel, light, straight. Perfect. Her comment? "Bit rough!" :hittinghead:
  13. Yep, you have bad days occasionally (and CFIs get peeved occasionally), but that solo tells me that your CFI knows you are a better pilot than you think you are. Keep enjoying the journey!
  14. Looking forward to seeing more of this.
  15. Tomo, what was your camera mount? I liked the way that it wasn't rigidly fixed to the plane so that you have a slight feel of the plane's motion. Nice.
  16. No value in that. Great Whites don't like biscuits...
  17. Thanks for the suggestions, gents. The learning never stops... Much appreciated.
  18. The situation: Cool clear day, 7500 ft. Engine starts to run a little rough. The reaction: pull on carby heat (though not very much - I've since been told that carby heat should be all or nothing). The response: Engine instantly picks up between 100 and 200 rpm. I was expecting the engine to run more roughly to start with while the ice was consumed. Surprised, I turned the heat off; revs drop. Back on; revs rise. Any idea what was happening? It just doesn't seem to fit in with any of my preconceived notions...
  19. Bruce, I had to get bifocal sunnies made just so I could read the instruments! It made such a difference being able to read the labels instead of attempting to remember which switch was the strobe and which was the mags... I just told the optometrist that the lower part needed to focus at about arms length, and then got him to put the separation line between the two halves down lower than normal so that the bulk of the lens is for looking out of the cabin, and only a relatively small part is for reading the panel and maps.
  20. Can't move them now - that'd damage that beautiful interior - but two sets of switches mounted on top of both the throttle mounts would be good. Nice easy access when setting up for landing without moving your hand far from the go-button.
  21. KJ, really nice looking. What are the two switches on the armrest? Any chance of accidental activation? (Oh, and those seats look so comfortable...)
  22. Top stuff Phil. I remember scanning my logbook and emailing it to my family - even if it didn't mean anything to them, nothing was going to stop me telling the world!
  23. I love that view out the back window. I've never flown a plane where I could see what was behind me...
  24. Beat me to it, Owi. I weighed my flight bag as part of the preps for Temora (had a slight weight issue with all the camping gear!), and was surprised. Ended up removing about half the guff, but it's tough when the heaviest books are mandated. p.s. I carry toilet paper too, but that's for the public toilet near the strip which has generally run out... :DirtDOG:
  25. I love how excited she sounds. The best type of pax.
